March is the month when everyone goes crazy for basketball. But we figured, why let basketball players have all the fun? So for those of you who are less athletically inclined and more eat-letically inclined, we’ve set up a March Sandwichness bracket. Come back to Woot! every day to vote and help us decide which sandwich is the king of all things lunch!
All you have to do to participate is go to the polls and vote for your favorite sandwiches! It’s that easy! It’s even easier than it would be to actually eat the sandwiches! But probably a little less tasty.
Check back on Woot! on Tuesday when the tournament champion will be revealed!

YESTERDAY'S WINNERS:

Two tough matches yesterday. Cheeseburger was pretty obviously going to win against Gyros, but Gyros still put up a noble fight, netting itself a solid 36% of the votes. It was still a runaway, but not the extreme runaway it could have been. Similarly, Breakfast put Cheesesteak through its paces, netting about 45% of the votes.
Now, we move on to our final round. It may seem that our two final contenders are relatively similar sandwiches; both are beef sandwiches, oozing with cheese and piled high between buns or rolls. But please, don’t be fooled by their obvious similarities: these are very different sandwiches.
On the one hand, we have the Cheeseburger. The whole concept of a Cheeseburger is such an inherently good idea that it becomes one of those foods that falls into the “even when it’s bad it’s still pretty good” camp. But taste alone isn’t the Cheeseburger’s most valuable asset. The Cheeseburger’s real strength lies in its ubiquity and versatility. A Cheeseburger is a sandwich that we know we can take comfort in finding almost anywhere around the world at almost anytime. We can eat them when we’re starving, when we’re not that hungry, at home, at a restaurant, indoors, outdoors, at any time of day. And if anyone out there tries to claim that they’ve never eaten a Cheeseburger for breakfast, they’re probably a liar.
On the other hand, the Cheesesteak is a much more nuanced sandwich. People from Philadelphia would argue that most of us outside of Philly aren’t even equipped to properly appreciate or judge the quality of a Cheesesteak, yet it still made it to the final round of a bracket voted on by people all over the country. Why is that? My theory is that the Cheesesteak’s reputation as a cultural icon is so strong that it’s turned Cheesesteak into the archetypical “hometown sandwich”. Even if you’re not from Philly, you can appreciate the idea of a sandwich whose belovedness can inspire solidarity; you probably have foods from your own hometown that make you feel that way. Cheesesteak’s secret weapon in this competition will be the powerful emotional sandwich undercurrent that it taps into.
