Music Monday: Happy Birthday

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday!

John Lee Hooker - Burning Hell

A lot of rock was born from John Lee Hooker's fingers. A lot of credit was also stolen from him at the beginning. Thankfully, today we are aware what a debt we owe this blues legend. Give him a Happy Birthday in honor of what he gave us. Which is most of rock.

Four more birthday types to come!

Dale Hawkins - Suzie Q

You might know this as a CCR song, but they didn't write it. Dale Hawkins did! He's passed on, but his music remains. Posthumous Happy Birthday.

Vernon Reid - Mistaken Identity

Vernon Reid was the guitarist for Living Colour! His solo work was never as well known as it could have been. But just listen to it! It's great! Oh, and also, Happy Birthday.

Roland Orzabal - Break It Down Again

Was he the Tear or the Fear? Orzabal basically took over his 80's band and went forward alone into the 1990s. Some people think of this song as a drop in quality from the old stuff, but I don't. I loved Elemental as much as their earlier stuff. Happy Birthday!

Tori Amos - Spark

Like David Bowie, Tori Amos has made a career around reinvention. She's had so many styles around a central pivot point, and even the songs I don't care for I still have no choice but to respect. But this particular phase was my all-time favorite Tori, which is why I've chosen it. Meanwhile she's off doing something great and new. Happy Birthday!
