Music Monday: Happy Birthday To A Bunch Of People

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! Today is the birthday of five different people who made a contribution to music. Carlos Santana, Kim Carnes, Howard Jones, Chris Cornell & Stone Gossard were all born today. Are you about to say "Who?" to any of those names? Well, good! Because if you knew who they were, you wouldn't need to read the rest of this blog post.

Carlos Santana - Evil Ways

I have fond memories of driving around with friends, Santana records playing in the car. I have less than fond memories of what Santana did with Rob Thomas in the late 1990s, but it certainly paid off for him then, didn't it?

One down, four to go! More after the jump.

Kim Carnes - Betty Davis Eyes

Kim Carnes was well known for her smokey voice and the black-and-white nostalgia she brought to all those who loved watching old movies on late night TV. And then, just like those old movies on late night TV, she vanished to make way for something new. Still, it's a pretty song.

Howard Jones - No One Is To Blame

Can anyone just pick ONE Howard Jones song? Well, I had to, so I chose this one. But they're all good, really. You just wait, he's going to be rediscovered soon. Kinda like how Hall & Oates are coming back. Howard Jones will have his day again!

Chris Cornell - You Know My Name

I had to debate here, because Chris Cornell's work with Soundgarden is a lot better than his solo stuff. But I'm a sucker for a James Bond theme, and I think Casino Royale was the best Bond gunsight opening ever, so I went for it.

Stone Gossard - Stardog Champion

Sure, he was great in Pearl Jam, but I have always been sorry that Mother Love Bone didn't have more time in the sun. Maybe it's just the glam fan in me, but I prefer this sound to the grungy Pearl Jam feeling. Even still, man's talented. So Happy Birthday to you, Stone, and to everyone on this list! Yay for you all! Yay! Yay! Yay!
