Music Monday: Beach Party

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! A good ol' fashioned beach party is a summer tradition. It doesn't even matter if you're in a landlocked state. Find some sand, pour out some water near it, and you've got all you need to beach party the day away while blasting all these tunes! Come on, every body! Let's make it happne!

The Jamies - Summertime, Summertime

This lovely song is structured like a hymn. And in a way, it is! What kid doesn't know the feelings of finally reaching summer and having nothing to do for three whole months? If that's not a religious experience I don't know what is.

More beach party to come! Stay away from the undertow!

Brian Hyland - Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

This novelty song cashed in on the then-new craze of the bikini with the story of a good girl led astray. Also the linked video finds a rather clever way to get the story past the early 1960s TV censors. Props to Dick Clark for that one.

Annette Funicello - Jamaica Ska

Some people think ska started with Madness. Some people think ska started here, with Bob Hope and a former Mouseketeer. Some people just shake their head and wonder what the hell went wrong with this planet. Regardless, you can't have a beach party without some Annette, so if you don't like this song, try another

The Beach Boys - Surfer Girl

Ah, the classic sunset song. The Beach Boys have plenty of dancin'-in-the-sand hits, but this slow ballad is just as good. It's ideal for a beach that's cooling down, having a few minutes of quiet time before cleaning up the leftovers and going back to shower.

Bobby Darin - Beachcomber

And then it's back to the station wagon and a slow drive to the hotel, beach rental, or the dark drive home. What a day! What a beach party! We should do this again sometime! Say, how about tomorrow?
