Music Monday: Jokes (Mostly Dirty)

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! The truth is, we've all laughed at a dirty joke at least once. Today Scott's gathered a variety of songs based on off-color humor. Offensive? Maybe. Exciting? Absolutely.

NSFW Mighty Sparrow - Castro Eating A Banana

If you can't make out the lyrics behind the fun fun music, here's the summary: a woman tries to stop children from looking at a photo of Fidel Castro eating a banana because she thinks it's pornography. That's the level of humor we're gonna explore today. More inside.

See you after the jump, if you care to debase yourself with us.

NSFW Judge Dread - Big Five

Before there was Andrew "Dice" Clay, there was Judge Dread. Dread's noteworthy in British culture for two reasons. The first: he inspired the name for a famous comic book lawman. And the second: he was a white guy doing reggae and ska before reggae and ska were popular with white guys. Like 90% of Judge Dread's work is based around a series of dirty jokes. I just picked the cleanest one. They get a lot worse.

Chuck Berry - My Ding-A-Ling

Everyone knows this song isn't actually about a toy made of two bells and a string. Even back when this song was released, nobody was fooled. But listen to the joy in those voices as they sing on Chuck's behalf, possibly so he wouldn't get arrested. That's the feeling of getting away with it. People love that feeling. That's why Chuck turned someone else's dirty joke into a career-defining song.

The Stranglers - Peaches

This Stranglers song is sexist. It's unashamedly sexist. It's ridiculously sexist. Even the bass line sounds sexist. And yet, it's absolutely killer. By owning what it is and what it does, it gets away with it. Just like a good dirty joke, it's all about the delivery.

Meat Loaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Light

This never-ending song (so long it has a baseball game in the middle) is basically just a shaggy dog story to get you to the punch line. Like all Meat Loaf songs, I can't say I love it, and yet I can't help but respect it. Maybe it's not exactly dirty, but it's certainly not clean.
