Music Monday: Scott's Favorites Of 2014

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! As the year comes to a close, it's a great time to recap all our favorite songs of the year that was. Of course Scott's made a list of his favorite five. You should start in on yours now, then you'll be ready to post them in the comments. Ready? Okay! Let's go!

Tom Vek - Sherman (Animals In The Jungle)

Love this song. Love it. THERE IS NO CHOICE YOU WILL LOVE IT OR I WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE WITH A STICK.

Four more songs, after the jump. Don't cross him, people. He's loco.

Usher feat. Juicy J - I Don't Mind (lyrics NSFW)

This lovely song (seriously, it's actually very lovely) is a weird look at the world we live in today. It's a love song to a stripper, reassuring her that it doesn't matter what a person does, it's who a person is inside. Also there's no way this is 100% serious. Well produced, but not serious.

Sinead O'Connor - Take Me To Church

I'm not always a fan of the "look how I've grown as a person" comeback attempts but Sinead O'Conner never really went away, you know? This song (and video) is clearly an older woman looking back at who she was, but it rocks more than every song on the latest U2 album combined. And it's interesting to see someone admitting that there really are two different types of churches in the world. You may not like Sinead O'Connor, but you gotta admit she certainly knows how to open up a discussion.

Sidebar: I actually wanted to share "Kisses Like Mine" which is a fantastic Stagger Lee kinda self-promotion, but I can't find a good copy online! I encourage you to seek out the mp3 on your own.

The Horrors - I See You

This lost child of 1986 would have fit neatly between The Psychedelic Furs and The Cure (assuming you weren't filing your records alphabetically, of course). But it's new this year! Clearly The Horrors worked hard to make this loving pop tribute to the past sound as good as it does. It certainly impressed me.

Eno • Hyde - Daddy's Car

For those who don't know, Hyde is Karl Hyde from Underworld and Eno is Brian Eno from, well, most modern music since about 1977 or so. This collaboration is pretty much a natural progression for both of them and it shows. A great record for the background or the forefront.

Mad that Scott missed Sia? Frustrated he overlooked that lovely War On Drugs? Make your list and make it happen NOW. Also let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use. See you next... year!
