Woot is the originator of One Day, One Deal. Every midnight (central) we launch an event: one sale that lives until it sells out, or the next midnight.

Reckoning Crew: Friends Links & The Day of Reckoning

By now, a lot of you have figured out that we’ve continued to make our past Shirt.Woot designs available on their own pages. It’s a radical departure from past Woot practice, and a step into unknown terrain – oooh, scary! But we figured it made sense to give the designers some time to let their friends, family, and other supporters (and anybody else) get ahold of their shirts. That’s why we call them “Friends Links.” The thing is, though, that it’s impossible for our production team to keep producing an unlimited number of shirt designs forever. And it doesn’t make a ton of economic sense to keep every design in print even if nobody wants them anymore. So every Monday at noon, we’re going to winnow down the crop to keep things manageable. This is the Day of Reckoning that we hint at in our FAQ, and it goes a little something like this:

  • All shirts that debuted in the previous week are immune, to give them a little time to percolate.
  • The rest of the ongoing shirts will be ranked by average daily sales, excluding their debut day – in other words, by how well they’ve sold once they were off our front page.
  • Only the 10 best-selling ongoing shirts will survive. The shirts that don’t make the cut will no longer be available.
  • Hence, the Day of Reckoning will reduce the number of ongoing shirts to 15 – the 10 best-sellers, plus the 5 from the previous week, which were immune from reckoning.
  • There will always be between 15 and 20 ongoing shirts available, depending on how many new daily shirts we’ve introduced since the last Day of Reckoning.

Confused? Put away that slide rule and read it again. It’ll sink in eventually. The important part is, the first Day of Reckoning will be this coming Monday, August 20. As it stands right now, here are the sales rankings of all the shirts to be reckoned, from the best-seller on down:

The jockeying for position will probably heat up now, so anything can happen. Nobody is safe. If you want to buy one of our ongoing shirts, don’t wait around. If you’re an artist who designed one of these shirts, tell your friends and family to vote with their sawbucks so your shirt can survive another week. This is the homestretch, kids – come noontime Monday, dreams will be shattered, hopes will be dashed, shirts will drift off to the big dresser-drawer in the sky. Which shirts do you think deserve a long and happy life – and which ones should we quietly put out of their misery?
