An Allison Stokke posting without any photos

There is the Internet we might want, and then there is the Internet we've got.

The one we've got is dominated by the id, and the male id at that. It turns Allison Stokke, a first-rank high-school athlete from California who happens to be extremely attractive, into a widespread lust object, to the point where her dad, a lawyer, searches for postings about his daughter to look for illegal acts or a potential stalker.

It started with a sports blog that realizes writing about sports isn't enough to draw an audience. So it also posts pictures of what are reductively called "babes." In Stokke, who is also an athlete and 18, it hit the jackpot.

A photo of her at a track meet -- she is a state champion pole-vaulter with a college scholarship -- went up on the blog and spread like, well, like photos of starlets who deliberately pose enticingly to further their careers as lust objects. Much of it was what the observers no doubt saw as harmless, puppy-dog stuff, but much of it was more explicit, in lewd comments on message boards and the like.

All of it is unfair to Stokke, who compellingly laid out her feelings of violation and objectification in a Washington Post story today. But the Internet we've got isn't particularly concerned about the human aspect of the images it drools over. Maybe reading about Stokke's plight will move at least some people to think twice before forwarding a photo or posting a panting remark.

The Internet we might want, meanwhile, is a vast repository of knowledge and a means of connecting disparate people and showing off great work. That one is out there, too, but it's sometimes hard to hear and see it beneath all the lewdness and the sniggering.

Here's an example of it that I came across today, from another Allison, Canadian singer-songwriter Crowe:

I kinda like the internet we've got, actually. However, I can understand how some parts might get out of hand. I believe everyone here has been (relatively) respectfully complimentary of her.

If you have a printer that has its drivers offloaded to the computer, like the HP 1000, this print server is known to NOT work. (Actually, that sort of printer doesn't work with a damned thing and is lucky to work with its own drivers since it's just a winmodem that you can put paper into, but it was HP's foray into cheap printers and they got sucked in, fools.)

So, check compatibility! (Oh, and tech support at USR is closed and the website won't tell you.)

Been planning to get one of these, and the price makes two easy so that I have a Father's Day gift to pass. Very ribs!

Can you use this to expand the range of the remote for a Roomba?

While I do love the furry little puppy dogs, I find pugs to be one of the ugliest dogs out there. CREEPY.

Wait wait - actual question here...

Can you connect this thing directly to a printer and be done or do you also need a computer connected to them both in order to use it?

Um... and you're gonna make what come out of the printer... from where? I guess a direct answer would be "Sure! You can attach it, and a blender and and leaf blower to your printer if you like. It's a free country"

Got mine yesterday, tried to set it up today. When I plug my printer in (HP laserjet 1020) the print server thing basically freezes. Also, the red Error light never stops flashing, unless the USB port is unplugged, and I hold the DIAG button down for a few seconds. It also gets really hot, much hotter than I think a device like this should get. The thing instantly un-freezes when I unplug the printer. It also gets new IP's every time, so troubleshooting is much harder. I will set up a static IP for it later though. My main concern is that USRobotics doesnt seem to have any firmware for it, or any useful help/info anywhere, including their website. I see one or two people here didn't have any problems... What printers were you using, and did the setup work if you followed the directions?

Finally got it today.

First let me just say, I'm good with networks.
My router has:
1 PC via network, Vonage, 2 PCs via wireless, & W.I.I.
all working fine with WPA security enabled.

This was needed to break the dependency on the first PC for printing. 3 hours later, I've sort of accomplished that. It was not easy.

Printer is a HP Officejet 6210 All in one. I don't need the scan or fax from PC anyway. All PCs are running XP.

So, how:
1. Follow the instructions for the device (using network cable). No issues, router shows device. Set up all wireless security settings. This takes you through step 3 in book.
2. Remove cable, unplug and turn back on. Wireless never connects to router. Waste 1 hour on settings on device and router. Eventually give up. Replug in network cable. Lucky my printer is not that far from the router. So much for wireless access. Instruction book is useless. (Retried this later after step 11, still doesn't work)
3. Install the Print Server Port Driver. Install fails.
4. Realize there is utility software on the disk. Install and run it. By randomly clicking on things in it, the device now sees my printer. Yeah. PC doesn't - bummer
5. Reinstall the Print Server Port Driver. Install works. Pick port. Go to install existing printer but nothing shows up. Clicking 'ADD new' wastes another hour. Complete red herring.
6. Instead - close driver app. Go to Windows Add new printer. Select LOCAL printer. Scroll down port box till I see the P1 USR device port. DOUBLE YEAH!
7. Pick printer driver. Here's where HP sucks. Could not get it to give me my 6210 driver even though I have HP disk in drive and the darn thing is already installed on the PC. Waste 3rd hour.
9. Pick generic Officejet driver. Installs. Print test page. Prints!
10. Lastly go back to the printer in Windows property. Switch OfficeJet to OfficeJet 6210. No issues. Done.
11. Repeat steps 5,6, 9-11 on two more PCs up in running in 2 minutes each.

So, 3 hours later I'm done. No wireless, but still works as a print server. I do notice the device runs HOT. That's going to annoy me eventually.

My conclusion: product sucks, but I won't be sending it back till it burns up next week.

interesting find type in W.I.I. without the periods!

kaatew

Today's follow up - device was locked up when I went to use it. Pulled plug and waited 3 minutes for reconnect. Also very hot to touch.

It gets one more day/chance then it's going back or in the trash.

kaatew

For anyone who cares -
Trash pile wins!
It was also a pain to get my PC to recognize the original Printer configuration.

I'm not going to contact USR as I don't want a replacement. I now remember that I've never had luck with USR products (2-3 different things over the last 10 years).

I'm not returning to Woot as it's really not their fault and this fits my:
Under $50 don't buy things you don't really need lesson.

Wasting the money will teach me not to be so quick to buy next time.

marker101

Got mine. Set up was a breeze, it was working just fine.

Unfortunately three days later it was locked up, and a power cycle resulted in the unit not powering back on

Now I'm without a print server...again.
