Nice. 87 out of 100 on the alatest review scores. That's pretty good.

I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

That subwoofer enclosure reminds me of that Star Trek episode with Frank Gorshin where he and the other character had a half black, half white face!

I actually have this system. In general it's a good deal. The one caveat I have is that the response to the remote (particularly for switching between, say "Aux" and "Digital") is very slow. It also does not behave well if you are using a multi-remote (like the Harmony remotes) that is sending signals to other devices at the same time. It wants a brief pause between the commands it receives, and the commands sent to other devices--otherwise it gets confused. Additionally, although you can easily train another remote to send signals to it--don't expect pre-trained remotes (even those that say they support Phillips) to work with it.

Other than that, I'm very happy with the system.

I have two units like this. One purchased about a year and a half ago, and another about two months ago. Both from Philips Outlet (now closed) as refirbs, they are excellent bang for the buck. Can't complain about the audio, or the dvd players. They look and sound great with flat panel hi-def and a hi-def cable box....loud enough to shake walls.
This price is good, too. They were about $130 in the outlet, except for the Friends and Family discount I got on the last one. That was the best $70 (delivered) I ever spent on a sound system.

Looking at the size of those lil speakers, I feel sorry for them when their owners crank up the sound. *Clip clip clip* *POP*! and poof, they're blown

actually it is, it just doesn't mention it in the description or the instructions, there is a code you have to put it... it's fun like a cheat code. I have this system and love it to death. I have a few region 2 discs i watch on it.

On the USB, flash only no HDD, and no video from the USB only pics.

Having this system is one of the many reasons i've held off on blu ray

1000 watts? It's probably more like 50 x 5 RMS plus something like 100 watts RMS for the sub.

What I've found out about these all-in-ones is that they sound good enough for a vast majority of casual users. They get loud enough for even fairly large rooms and at this price you can't beat it.

Not a bad system for the money. The DVD tray is the only thing I hate about it (Extremely fragile)!! Needs a software update but easy to do with USB. Four small speaks have plenty of cable to reach wherever you want to put them.

I have a 2.1 version. The wattage spec is higher on this and is a 5.1. The firm ware is same. The HDD/any USB media works as long as it is FAT and NOT NTFS. I use the USB feature more often. The sound is indeed sub-par, but now I am used to sub-par sound. If you are a big fan of base and clarity, then stay away from this one. The sub woofer feels anorexic and the highs are camouflaged. This carp is capable of playing most media however and is feature rich. But IMHO a music system should reproduce good music at first and this one is probably a disappointment. Try some non-branded feature rich product instead. Atleast you know you were trying and that you were trying unbranded to bail yourself out.

Say that I have four nice speakers lying around. Is this worth buying just for the center, sub, and receiver?

In for 2. It's a $100...

The pioneer/xbox360 system for $100 seems similar and I've been very pleased. I'm not a fan of mid-grade equipment...either do it right, or do it cheap. These will make great gifts for my parents and brother...master bedroom setup ftw?

Probably not a good idea. You'll notice that the impedance varies from speaker to speaker (3 ohms, 8 ohms, etc.) and each speaker is matched to the digital amplifier. You could run this setup in conjunction with another stereo to reinforce the volume or bass, I suppose. It has inputs and outputs for a variety of other equipment.

You mean the Netherlands? And why do you trust a japanese company over a dutch company?

On that note, do you have any idea what kinds of research advancements philips has made? Don't even get me started on the crazy things NXP is working on.
