It caches the stations that you select. you only need the wifi when you "refresh" your stations. I bought one last time, besides some minor design flaws (there is a newer product G2) its the best thing to listen to in my car.

yes, but you have to buy the FM mod to do so. its not built in like on satrad decks. of course you can always use the audio jack for the best sound quality.

the newer G2 allows 3GB of storage for your personal MP3s while this model allows up to 4GB. So even if Slacker fades into history all the songs stored on your Slacker s 8GB drive will still play and you will be able to use the 4GB to store newer songs.

By the way the recent update that fixed the stuttering issues and added all the same artist as the G2 makes this almost a no brainer if you don't mind the larger size

I've really wanted to ditch XM since the channel mutilations happened. I've been listening to Slacker (free) at work for months and love the service & playlists.
This is tempting, but I'm waiting for the Slacker G2's to come down in price.

In addition to its free, ad-supported service, Slacker offers two levels of subscription services.

-Slacker Radio Plus subscribers have unlimited skips, no advertisements, and the ability to turn off DJ’s on stations. This is available as a 12-month subscription for $47.88 (which works out to $3.99 per month)

-Slacker Radio Premium includes everything in Slacker Radio Plus, but also adds the ability to save songs to their music library online and on the Slacker Portable Player. Songs stored in the library can be played an unlimited number of times at will. There are three different payment options for the Slacker Premium Radio: 3 months for $29.97, 6 months for $49.99, and 12 months for $89.99.

The big difference between Premium and Plus being the ability to SAVE songs. So when you "heart" a song it stays on that station for replay later.

Really a good buy. Got mine for Christmas, and its a really nice device because it updates music automatically. It totally replaced my car stereo, and I had it on all of Christmas on the Christmas station for the house. Highly recommend it if you dont have time to update your ipod with itunes constantly.

Hey guys,
Just thought I'd throw out my two cents. I bought the 2GB G1 when it was on Woot a few weeks ago, and love it. The Woot description is wrong about the 8GB also. It allows you to store 4GB of your own music on it, plus 4GB of Slacker tunes. Honestly, once you get your stations tailored to your tastes, its amazing. I am a huge music person, and am listening to music almost every minute I'm awake. The music in my iTunes library was beginning to get stale, and this service has really put some life back into my music library. Also, just to clarify again, you do not have to be connected to WiFi all the time for this to work. It caches the songs on the device when you connect it to a WiFi network. Honestly, you could buy this thing, try it, and resell it on eBay for more than you paid for it if you don't like it. I'm probably going to sell my 2GB and get this, just to have more room for my own stuff. I can only hold 15 stations on my 2GB, and I haven't even listened to them all. Last, yes there are some technical problems with the device, but Slacker support is awesome. As for the bricked G1 after the latest firmware upgrade problem, you seem to be the only one with that problem. I am on the Slacker forums all the time, and everyone else is raving about the upgrade.

I bought the smaller one here at Woot, and I have to say, this thing is pretty cool! Don't think of this as an MP3 player, because that is not really what it is. Think of it as a portable Pandora.com.

If you are like me, you don't have time to download new music and update playlists. With me, I always make a playlist, and then get sick of all of the songs on it by the time the next week comes along. But with this, all of that is done for you. Also, I am really bad with who sings what songs, and have been wanting to listen to songs from the 90s, so lately I have been playing the '90s alternative station. All my favorite songs, back again! Really cool.

Pros:
-You do not have to install ANY software on your PC (if you have WiFi)! Everything can be managed on the web
-You can use WiFi or USB to update your media player
-The radio stations they made are well done
-The Heart and Ban buttons are a nice feature, which control the priority of song plays (Hearted songs are played more frequently, banned songs never come back)
-For many artists, you can read an artist bio, and album bio. Pretty neat.
-The screen looks amazing
-You can set a handful of features for playing, such as if you want newer or older songs, how often you want favorite songs to play, and if you want the service to look for new artists that you may like.
-On my car stereo and headphones (Sennheiser HD 555), the sound quality is what you would expect from a good MP3 player (such as laptop headphone output)
-Adequate bitrate for songs (I don't know what it is, but listen to the web service if you have any concerns)
-You can manage favorite/banned songs online (so you can favorite a song just to remind you of what it is, then clear the status on the PC after you write down the name)

Cons:
-The firmware is a little buggy (not quite final release quality)
-Not being able to navigate the song can be annoying. All you can do is pause or skip.
-I really like the touch strip, but it is too sensitive for use. They have abandon this technology on the G2 unit, so don't expect firmware to fix this. You can disable the touch strip
-No Equalizer
-You need the web service or software in order to choose what radio stations you want
-You need the computer to edit favorite/banned songs

Other:
-They claim you get "commercials" every hour. This is true for the web player, but on the portable, all I have heard are short clips maybe 5 seconds long saying "You are listening to Slacker Radio" maybe once an hour
-This player is best used by turning it on and forgetting about it. Options can only be changed online, and you have no selection in what you listen to (other than changing radio stations and skipping songs).
-It does have storage for MP3s you already own, I have not use this yet
-The player tells you the artist of the next song, but that is it.
-The 6 skips per hour are only for that specific radio station. Other stations have independent skip counters.
-In order to skip a song without using any of your 6 skips per hour, you can change radio stations. When you change radio stations, new songs are picked for currently playing and next up.

If you are unsure, just go to Slacker.com and listen to the web service for a bit, and I think you will end up buying one!

I got one of the 2G units a while back. I actually like the large size compared to some of the new MP3 players because I can SEE the writing on the screen without straining.

As for those concerned about the fact that you can only skip 6 songs per hour with the free service, go to the Slacker web site and try the online player for a few minutes. Whatever you can play there you can send to the portable. I set up my own mix for a couple of stations and loaded them. You can set up a station with 15 or more artists and it will stick to those unless you set it to add similar content. That is adjustable for the amount of "discovery" of similar artists in three levels.

It also "learns" what you don't like over time by the songs you click the "ban" button for... you never hear them again. It has a "favorites" button that tells it to add something more often.

The commercials are about 2 per hour for about 10 or 15 seconds. Most are just Slacker spots with an ad for the G2 now and then.

No more wasted time and money down loading songs. Slacker is aptly named for those of us too busy or lazy (or frugal) to keep an iPod up to date with songs. Slacker is the best thing since sliced bread for us and the new firmware update makes it a G2 clone, except for looks, and makes this a steal.

Becareful.

I bought 3 of these and gave them away as gifts.

It could be one of the most FRUSTRATING experiences I have had in a while with a piece of technology, and I used to be a network admin!

The player DEMANDS that when you connect to it via wifi that it uses the router setting 192.168.0.1. What that means is that the player is probably trying to use the router default address... In other words, just about everyone in the forums is complaining about the player not connecting, because the player can only use a certain "spot" on your router.

Since I gifted it to my sister's boyfriend he couldn't connect to it via his Macbook.

I also had to explain a bunch of things to my sister about how it connected and I feel like non tech people will have a hard time doing this.

If the selling point is the 40 stations, it will download one station and stop. So, I have 15 stations, and I've barely got it to get past station 10. I can't imagine having to wait for 40 stations!

Last time woot sold these a few weeks ago, the slacker connection was down due to all the people trying to connect. It really sucked because nothing really worked.

Other than that, it's a good concept, but truly FRUSTRATING!

One word of warning... The Slacker software player that the instructions tell you to use to set up your stations is no longer working. You HAVE to use the web player from your browser to log in and set up your stations. The Slacker forums under the Customer Support tab on their web site has more info.

BTW, you can find a list of stations in the forums not shown on the player that you can add to your favorites. Various people set up their own mix and then publish the stations for others to use.

johnny98

I bought the 2GB Slacker for $50 from Woot a few weeks ago. If I didn't already have that one, I would buy this 8GB model instead because of the bigger memory. If you don't like buying (or stealing) tons of MP3s or you don't like micromanaging your playlists, then Slacker is for you. The pre-programmed Slacker channels are very good or you can create your own if you want. The on-board memory holds all the music between wi-fi refreshes and 8GB should be several days worth of music for most people.

I don't listen to my XM radio anymore because the Slacker sound quality is much better and the music selection is just as good. Plus, you can look at the big color LCD screen to see what it is currently playing. The LCD shows the album cover as well as an artist biography and album description.

The main downside is the size of the device. With the 4 inch (diagonal) LCD screen, the device may be too big to comfortably fit in tight jeans pockets. If you're going to carry it in a backpack, the size isn't a big deal. The Slacker does come with a carrying case, but the case does not have a belt loop.

Also, some people have reported problems setting up the wifi. It should be the same as setting up any other wifi device (enter the MAC address and wifi password), but maybe there are incompatibilities with some wifi networks.

Ok

NO Continious wifi needed. it ONLY needs it to SYNC every now and then and its totally transparent. you plug the charger in at night and it automatically finds your wifi and "syncs" itself without any input from you EXCEPT the first time where you tell it to connect to your network. YOU CAN enter a wep key if your configuration is that way.

this thing is TRULY wonderful. Our family got 7 of these in the 2gb variety. I got 3 my dad got 3 and I got my sister boyfriend to get one for me too. Christmas Gifts all around!

I am so impressed with this (and they JUST YESTERDAY update the firmware which seems to have fixed 100% of the problems with not all artists making it onto the device!!)

for the last few weeks I have not even looked at my mp3 player. I have found so many new artists I never heard of or never would have thought to give a second glance.

I found out I like Nickelback (well some of it) My brother listens to that. I would never have given them a second look because I would have assumed it was a metal band since thats what he listens to.

I found One Republic
I found Meriam Yeung

The List goes on with NEW music I have discovered with this thing. I am HOOKED

the service is FREE they also have a pay service $47.88 per year (this gives you unlimited skips and allows you to request specific music)

the free version is just fine for most people. You can make custom stations.

Think of it as an MP3 player that has unlimited tracks that you NEVER have to pick and load. you just tell it what kind of music you want and it does the rest hence the name slacker.

you can mark music as I love it or I hate it

Love it and you will hear that more often and it will select more music "similar" to it HATE it and you will never hear that song again and now it learns what you don't like

so far this is working fantastically the music just gets better and better the more I mark stuff and sync

From the PC you can also ban artists all together so you will never hear them on that station and what you ban from one station will not effect other stations (which is nice)

You can "skip" 6 times an hour on the free service. Remember this is supposed to be RADIO not an mp3 player so think of it from that perspective.

I am simply blown away. So far everyone in the family is in LOVE with these things without exception.

The web player is buggy as hell and you want to pull your hair out but once your set up on the hardware player you will almost NEVER have to log into the website again except to add or remove stations.

Truly a wonderful device I REALLY hope they can hang in there and survive. If you love music your VERY unlikely to be disappointed in this purchase!

The sound quality is no where near CD but it really is pretty good. In the car on the stereo or from the buds I was impressed with the quality considering the extreme compression (similar compress to satellite radio but much higher quality!!)

I would say its right around 128kbps quality sounding with some songs dipping to Ultra high quality 96kbps and some songs go as high as mediocre 160kbps

so really not that bad. Very clean with few artifacts. easily the equal of a good qualify FM reception.

you can load your own MP3;s i fact this one I think is 50/50 4gig for slacker 4gig for your own stuff but I have never once used the mp3 side no need.

YOU MUST sync as least once a month! or the music (slacker side) "expires" (thats the labels fault not slackers) but again its transparent you plug in to charge at night and it does its thing without any input from you after initial setup.

I also LOVE that if you select something while its playing you get another picture and BIOGRAPHY history on the artists and so far almost everything has extensive history. So much so I have to pause the playback so I can finish reading it (its fascinating) hit it again and you get info and history on the specific album the track your listening to is from.

I am absolutely positively hooked So much so I bought this 8gb unit and will gift my 2gb unit :-)

How much music does it hold? slacker says it will eventually (after a few syncs and learning what you like depending on the station and all) download 100-300 songs per station (also depending on how FULL you keep it. only use 20 of your 40 stations and eventually slacker realizes this and makes those 20 BIGGER

so in theory you could have THOUSANDS of songs on your slacker at any one time.

JUST RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM SLACKER SUPPORT REGARDING PROBLEMS WITH THE JUKEBOX SOFTWARE:

Thank You for contacting Slacker Customer Support,

At this time, development on the Software Player has stopped, and we do not expect to release a new version or repair problems with the current version anytime in the near future. While the software is still available through our website, we recommend that everyone switch to using the web player, including many bug fixes and features over the software player. This also allows you to access your Slacker station and Slacker Library where ever you are with an internet connection, without having to worry about downloading or installing a program first. As well as you can update your Portable via the Portable tab on the left of the web player. http://www.slacker.com

thanks. ALSO that large 4" screen was a deal sealer for me

I LOVE album art and it does it great (think zune like gui)

I do wish they used more of the screen for the artist and album bigraphy information screen (would mean less scrolling)

the only real NIT I have with it is #1 I can not get album art to work for my own mp3's ??(it does not seem to read embedded art but will read folder art but I am too lazy to figure that out)

the other nit is I actually like the touch strip but its way to sensitive but the LOCK button puts a giant LOCK logo on the screen that does not go away which defeats the point of the nice album art screen but without the lock your constantly setting off that touch strip. So I just leave the strip off the jog wheel works just fine.

I do agree they are nice (itouch and pandora etc..) but you have similar problems to all other internet radio's except slacker

once you are out of range of wifi you have nothing but static (well nothing really but you get the idea)

Slacker came up with a novel and obvious idea at the same time. radio stations just play what is essentially a big "playlist"

so why not just DOWNLOAD the whole stinking list to memory. The problem was licensing which they are dealing with quite nicely (hence the 30 days 6 skips etc. etc..)

that means you only need a wifi connection nightly or every few days at most and its transparent once your done initial setup is done.

ALSO if you love or hate stuff on the SLACKER or the WEB PLAYER this information is shared between then and SYNC'd as you sync your player.

so when you hate something on the web player this translates to changes on the portable as well (REALLY slick)

$75 is also a hell of a lot cheaper than an itouch :-) and its a much nicer screen 4 inches 480x272 with the itouch being what 3.5 inches and only 320x240

the clarify difference is immediately apparent

and at this cheap a price its ok to be a dedicated device. at $250 or $300 I would want it to have everything and the kitchen sink inside but at $75 (or $55 for the previous woot) I could care less and am 100% satisfied with it.
