I wasn't impressed with this model. Sure, it's cheap, but mine died on me after a week. Skipping DVDs, randomly shutting down. Terrible. It did play DivX DVDs though, which was kinda cool.

I got rid of it and bought a Sony. Spent a little more, but it worked a whole lot better.

The one that I bought here a few weeks ago freezes up every now and then. Sometimes it takes forever for a disc to try and load. Should I take a chance on this one as well? Anybody else have that same problem?

elrik95

Have one of these as well. One of the best purchases I ever made. The Divx support is excellent.

Awesome price for a dvd player with HDMI out. Plus it includes DivX which is my favorite video format by far. For a compressed format it looks pretty good. Can't go wrong with this if you are looking for a DVD player.

Oh, apparently you can hack this so it's region free. That could be really handy.

so just to be certain, this is not one of the philips models with usb? I need to send my xbox in and really need something to hook my wd passport into. I know there are at least two relatively inexpensive models that have usb and I need one of them now!

Tempting for $20, my old Philips dvd divx player plays just about anything you can burn

I didn't see that in the specs. From the price, it would appear not. It would be nice to have. I missed the last dvd player woot. That one did have the USB.

scotland0208

I understand it plays DivX, but is that the same thing as .AVI? I just need some clarification.

Grimbus

Yeah this says nothing about USB, and the remote is different from the USB ones (I've had both). I highly, highly recommend the ones with usb.

This one? No.

Well, it's probably better than a $20 Coby or something, if you want a disc player for the garage or shed, or your stepson's room, in the garage or shed.

See improv in New York: Bandolero.

In for 1, even though I don't have the money for it (damn you woot!). Anyway, now off to buy an HDMI cable that I don't have the money for...

Finally, a DVD player with HDMI. And at a steal.

At its simplest, it means it converts the 720x480 video on a DVD up to 1920x1080, suitable for displaying on an HDTV.

How, exactly, it does this is the big question. In theory, letting the DVD player do the upconverting will result in better quality than letting the HDTV do the upconverting.

There's some info on this at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upconversion#Upscaling.2FUpconverting_DVD

I have this crazy feeling in my gut that if you look at sellout.woot you'll find an HDMI cable over there...

yes and no
you should really know what codecs are used by "the creator" of your avi files :D do some research. I don't know much but there are standards in place for most things and this should cover most divx xvid "avi" n prolly some crappy web wmvs even
