How much a month are these Live services going to cost after the three-month free trial?

Walruski

quality posts: 6 PM Avatar

I bought this in a previous woot last October. I was unable to load any map updates on it using the TomTom software. I tried 3 times. That being said it did work decently and can be customized to your liking. I have since sold it in favor of a Droid. Buy with caution.

You would definitely be paying for the name... I would recommend getting another brand for closer to the $60-$80 range or, better yet, wait for one to come in a random bag.

I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

Just thought I'd chip in about map upgrades!
You will probably not get any for free!

And now the long story:

I bought two refurb TomToms a bit over a year ago. First one was great, and even though after I plugged it into PC, it said the map guarantee has expired (that's a TomTom way to guarantee that when you bought a new unit, you get the latest map version - they give you free upgrades for a month), I called TomTom, e-mailed them a receipt, and they gave me spanking new maps...

Loved the unit (it was TomTom GO 920) so bought another one for second car a few months later. Bummer! No map guarantee for refurb units anymore!!! They informed me that it's a new policy they just implemented!

Duh...

So to make long story short: if yours turns out to be with 1.5 year old maps - there's no free upgrade. You'd have to pony up another $80 - 100 or so for the map, if you want the new one...

All that said - love my TomTom's. Both of them. Much better than my previous Magellan, and seems more flexible than Garmin too, although I never actually owned one, so can't testify under oath for that comparison!

I stand corrected. I have been shopping for a full featured GPS and waiting for the right price point to pull the trigger.

I don't think this one is enough of a deal to entice me.

I'd like bluetooth, FM transmitter (so it'll broadcast thru your stereo) and free lifetime traffic. Voice recognition would be a nifty feature.

The live service is $9.95/mo.

Yes and you can download other voices (snoop dog, ice t) etc etc. Though most voices don't work using the -S feature - meaning Spoken Street names turn by turn. Just some stardard voices do.

It still speaks just doesn't say the upcoming street name (but says turn right 200ft etc).

ADVANCED lane changes it a MUST (LIFE SAVING) feature for highway driving...chicago, NY etc

Here's the CNET review for the version without the LIVE feature (which retails around $120):

CNET TomTom XL 340 S Car GPS

the one with LIVE features hasn't been reviewed by CNET, but retails around $200 with one around $130 from OnlineCarStero.com:

CNET TomTom XL 340S LIVE - GPS Reciever

I am a bigger fan of the Garmin interface anyways.

Hope this helps anyone who's thinking about it though.

I think TomTom is the most flexible in this department!

There are three ways you can change voice:

1. Download more computer generated voices. These also speak street names out loud. Most are free.

2. Download Pre-recorded human voices, some of these are just regular guy or gal voices, some speak with english, australian, etc. accent, some are in different languages (you pick - Italian, French, Spanish, Greek, Chinese, Russian, Tagalog, etc. etc. etc. there are MANY). And some are celebrity voices either genuine or mocked up. Like Robin Williams will direct you where to go.... Some of these are free, others you have to pay for.

3. Record your own voice! Our GO 920 has a built in microphone (not sure about the model in question), and it can record right there. It will show you description of instruction, and you speak it up in any way you like it!

look more closely - this is not the LIVE model, although it does also contain a description of that partway down... but it does not claim to BE the LIVE model (look at product header, and main description further down)

I think that one requires an extra receiver for the traffic stuff. I'm assuming that the only difference is that the receiver is already built in to this unit. Plus it has that nifty little LIVE logo at the top/right corner of the screen.

I have, like and used the none "live services" version of TomTom for several years.

Now my Tom Tom needs another costly map update. What version is the map software on this one, and how many free updates (if any) does this referb allow? The voice to text on mine is so slow that direction changes close to one another often come too late, so I just use it in the "left/right/turn here" mode, which I prefer....don't have to rubber neck looking for street names that way. ;)

Guess Ill just keep using my current TomTom alongside my Droid for those times my TomTom maps dont keep up with road/freeway changes.

Don't like that the Droid lacks a repeat instruction, or does not give current and next instruction/direction change like the TomTom does.

Yeah this should be free. Some other brands its free, they just show little ad clips to keep it FREE.

Can't see paying for this feature. Plus I read the LIVE traffic+gas is usually a few hours behind. If that's true, then it isn't worth any extra cost.

The 340-S Live listed on amazon has the following to say about traffic:

amazon wrote:
RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver-Ready
This TomTom device is compatible with the optional RDS-TMC receiver, so your routing is optimized for the traffic ahead.

so now I'm not sure what does or does not come with this unit.

We owned a Tom Tom last year and we were not pleased with it. It seemed to loose connection with the satellite in what we thought was very easy area's, like the Jersey Turnpike. We bought a Garmin Nuvi and it is great.
