Today's DVD player reminded us of a major gripe we have about modern life. (Yes, we are small, petty, mean-spirited little men.) Now, we love watching '80s TV shows on DVD as much as the next group of post-boomers. But isn't it enough that every Stephen J. Cannell production that lasted 13 episodes is now available in a pricey, gatefold "Deluxe Edition"? Must the public be subjected to the frivolous, inane "extra features", too? Do we really need Judith Light's voice-over insights into her favorite Who's the Boss episodes, or to watch the Full House gang crack up every time Dave Coulier misses yet another cue? Following the old adage "If you can't watch 'em, mock 'em," here's your challenge this week:

Show us a DVD menu screen for an '80s TV show, featuring the least desirable DVD extra features you can think of.

It doesn't have to look like the real DVD menu screen, if the show is actually out on DVD already. It doesn't even have to feature a real TV show. Just make it look like a plausible menu screen, and most of all make it funny. We're looking for stuff like "Mr. Belvedere's Beauty Secrets" and "The Mythopoetics of Webster" - stuff you wouldn't conceivably watch if it was the last scrap of video on Earth and you were sick in bed on a Saturday night. Stuff a lot like real DVD extras, come to think of it.

Post your image in this discussion thread by 11:59 PM Sunday night. Prizes are $20/$50/$100 for 3rd/2nd/1st. The rules and criteria for winning: our panel of geniuses can and will make stuff up as it goes along. Use Photoshop, pen and ink, collage, MSPaint, taxidermy, tattoos, whatever, but it’ll only be judged if it’s visible in our forums as a jpg, gif, or png. Try to keep your maximum width to 450px. If you need a place to host your pictures, try www.imageshack.ws or www.photobucket.com. We have no connection to either, but they seem free and easy to use.

Just an aside, I find it really freaky that Dave Coulier comes up in yet another conversation this week.

I was recently told that Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" was written about Dave Coulier. Supposedly, he is "Mr. Duplicity." Not that I have a lot of love for Ms. Morissette's music, but it really takes the "edge" off that song to know who it is really written about.

Well damn, too many Diff'rent Strokes menus already.Gary Coleman's guide to finance, letting your parents touch your money, life story etc., all would be great menu features, but people beat me to the DS idea. Guess that's what happens when I enjoy what bars have to offer on thursday nights.
If Doogie Howser wasn't from my hometown, I'd be tempted to vote for that one. Instead I give props to the first one, no one should be forced through that much Murphy Brown.

Oh God! These are so damn funny! You guys rock! I'm waiting for the Airwolf, Remington Steel, Saved By The Bell, Punky Brewster entries. There were so many short lived 80's shows to choose from. By far, my favorite Woot contest. Gotta love the Pee Wee Herman, Different Strokes entries. Keep it coming!
