Meh! Why sidekicks?
It's not about getting fewer balls- this is a better price per magnet than retail, even if you don't count the book and donation. It's the same problem I ran into with the buckycubes... 125 just isn't a good number.
216 is a nice number of magnets, 6*6*6 = 2*2*2*3*3*3. So, when making geometric or otherwise mathematical models, you can divide the magnets evenly into 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 18, 24, 27, 36, 54, 72, or 108 equal groups. with 125, you can only partition your magnets into 5 groups, or 25 groups. And it's an odd number.
I was a fan of the special 144-magnet sets that were sold in previous woots, because that was at least fairly round despite not being an exact cube (and 3 sets made two "normal" ones).
