Thank you conversant and brand loyal wooters for Christmas Eve reading that I would rate as wicked as the GOP debates. *YYYYYAAAAAWN*

I am typing this on my 15 yr old Macintosh desktop G4 since I am unable to access the 2004 IBook G4 my husband is using for gaming at the moment. The Dell laptop is broken, and has been quarantined to the dust-covered junk pile under the stairs, but we'll dust it off later and bring it into the room just for the love of this joyous season.

A Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Holidays, New Year's best wishes and a peaceful winter to all.

$70 more on amazon...but you can spread those payments out over 12 months for no charge(if bought by new years eve)...so it's like paying a $5.83/mth service charge to do it...otherwise, if you charge it on woot and dont pay your credit card in full you will pay nearly $9 mth in interest (figuring 12%)...for a lot longer than 12 months...no deal here in my eyes...but then again, I'm a cheap blastard

merry christmas to all you freaks!!

Pretty compelling price. I am not a usual fan of MACS in general, but I always noticed their ips displays are always brilliant, and OS X is a big plus for various reasons for some people.

That said with a 1050 dollar budget. I salivate at what kind of PC setup I would be able to piece together, but again I digress.

I would never buy a MAC desktop, but that doesn't mean I can't see why other people would.

It's not the logo, it's the fact that the programs people use MOST are INCLUDED originally, and if you've ever used ANY Mac based gadgets, (computers, iPods, iPads, etc.,) and then tried to convert to a cheaper brand computer/tablet, you'll be ready to pull your hair out in 10 minutes, because compared to Mac stuff, they're so user UNfriendly, it drives you nuts. :p
My husband knocked Macs for years, (because of the price,) but he has a PC notebook and laptop, (1-3 years old,) and HE is the one you'll find on our 11 year old eMac watching YouTube, or Craigslist, or eBay, or WHATEVER, because even with his hunt and peck typing, he can drag a picture from ANYTHING he sees, to the desktop, to save and refer to later, or take a picture of the screen, (or parts of it,) if you aren't near a printer with a laptop and need to save a receipt or something. If PC computers were as easy to USE and DID EVERYTHING a Mac does, I could care less if it has an apple, banana, kiwi, or whatever on it. Why Macs chaffe my netherparts:

1)no ESATA, no USB3

2)You can't replace a hard drive easily. You have to take off the front panel. And lift off the glass, then go behind the LED panel...I have an idea Apple- there is a back panel on the IMAC. Don't you think one of your genious engineers can find a way to access the HD through an easy opening in the back?

3)Anyone that thinks that Macs are issue free is crazy. It's true that they are immune to 99% of current malware, but just doing a software update on a MAC has put me into a loop twice, one time I had to redo the OS to get it back.

4)Being a MAC. It's like living back in the USSR. Mac has no virus problems, but at the same time has no freedom. This is a personal choice. People that just need a computer to surf and email and do simple stuff and don't want the hassle of dealing with virus/malware. If you are a power user- then a mac is not your friend.

Having said that in my house I have 7 PC's,4 laptop PC's 1 android tablet and an IMAC. I use the IMAC for all my video (just family stuff not pro). Its imovie makes the imac worth its money. It is very extremely user intuitive- and I want a secure easy to maintain computer for this. But at the same time, as I fill the HD my options are limited. USB 2 and firewire. Currently I have a firewire external drive , but there is hesitation. Upgrading the HD Cost like $350 or more for the MAC people to do it. I don't feel comfortable replacing it. I work on PC desktops and Laptops all the time with no issues tearing them apart.

A mac could be decent if the following happened: Apple realized that they are not the source of all inovated technology (ie just gave up their fight with Adobe, and just succombed to flash being superior to what they have). Apple making their product a little more flexible, because as it stands now they make it almost impossible for a user to do a simple upgrade like replacing a HD. They also make external HD not a great option by limiting speed to USB 2.0 or firewire 800. It's archaic and ridiculous not to have esata or USB 3 on such a current device at this price point.

Guess after this, when I sleep tonight, all snug in my bed, visions of Macintosh Apples will dance in my head. A girl can still dream!

Hate tech support with any company.

same with all other apple products.

What people don't realize is, mac hardware is very often similar to hardware found on windows machines. Its not that hard to build a hackintosh...An simple analysis: a customer of mine wanted an i7 mac. it was $1400. I built a faster i7 with a bigger hard drive, and more memory, for $1200. Not a huge savings, but remember, the hard drive was bigger. there was twice as much memory. the processor was a 3.0GHZ i7 quad core vs a 2.0 ghz i7 quad core, and still at the end of the day, he got a better machine for cheaper, and still ran MacOS....

You left out the part where there is no software support, or drivers that take full advantage of the hardware.

Want to say it is pretty and shiny? Go for it. Want to say "It doesn't get viruses?" then stop, there is a reason there are anti-virus programs from the Mac, as it is even more vulnerable to infection that Windows systems, because the users are to stupid to act intelligently. Two things:
1. There are more viruses and malware out there dedicated to infecting Windows-based machines. If you think otherwise you're woefully ignorant.
2. Not every Mac user is 'incapable' of learning things, nor are we all 'too stupid to act intelligently' and we do not all have 'fanboi given ignorance'.

Now that that's out of the way, today's product! This is a good deal, considering its brand new condition- you can't even get comparable refurbished iMac's from Apple at this price. The two things I would -highly- recommend are 1. get an antiglare coating or some really thick curtains, and 2. get a usb extender. I'm not sure if the keyboard has a usb-in like some older ones, but it is pretty tough to work with the usb plugs in the back of the machine.

Happy holidays everyone!

And this is why windows computers are often said to be less expensive.

Best Buy has the HP Touchsmart w/ same Core i5 processor, has 2GB more memory than the apple, 500gig more hard drive space (no magical mouse though), 1.5" more screens space. And costs $3.00 more .

BUT It is a touch screen. Something not offered on Macs. So. Similar form factor, better specs, and a touch screen for $3.00 more, makes me think that apple is over priced.

I used to gripe about the costs of Macs. Now, I think you pay more up front for more support down the road. My 7 year old Mac just had it's first problem. Clearly, this machine was looonnngg out of warranty. A trip to the genius bar and 1 hour of my time, all of my photos, videos, and files were safe on my external hard drive, and it was up and running smoothly again for $39.

In contrast, my PC laptop--still under warranty--crashed at 3 months of age. No one local would service it with the warranty agreement. In order to use the warranty, I had to pay for a new hard drive up front, remove it myself, mail it in, wait for their assessment, get a new one mailed back, install myself, wait another month for the charge to be removed from my card.

Yeah, I'm sticking with Macs.

The vast majority of Mac users are PC converts. How many PC users have converted from Mac? That's all you really need to know.

I have a MacBook Pro that's 2 1/2 years old and it runs exactly the same as the day I bought it. I've never even needed to reboot it once. There's not a Windows laptop user that can make this same claim. You buy a PC, load it with bloatware (i.e. anti-virus, anti-spyware, defrag, etc.), clog the registry over time, and impact performance. I was a Windows user for 15 years and have buillt several PC's. I became tired of the constant diagnosing of problems and maintenance of my PC's, including the inevitable hard drive wipe/clean OS install that I'd have to do after owning my PC's for a few years. I made the move to Mac because I wanted something that just worked and didn't become a drag on my time. If you have the financial means and are dissatisfied with Windows, give Mac a try. You won't regret it.

As for the security issue, Mac's are safer, but less secure. Windows is less safe, but more secure. A prominent computer security expert described it with a good analogy. He said Mac OSX is the house in the middle of nowhere that never locks its doors, while Windows is the house in the bad neighborhood with a wall around it and bars on the windows.

I have the 21.5 inch, and the 24 inch. The Magic mouse is a polar issue... either you love it or you hate it. What makes it magic is the top of the mouse is like a touch panel, and it recognizes gestures as you slide your finger(s) across it. You touch the left side of the top of the mouse to left click, and the right side for right click. The only thing I don't like about the Magic mouse, is you can't touch both sides simultaneously for World of Warcraft. That's the only thing I could think of to gripe about though. I love both machines, and I'm a Windows convert.

They do, but as I pointed out it's simply more painful to throw out an expensive Mac, and more expensive to buy a new one. It's simple economics. And once again, my PC friends can keep the monitor if they throw out the PC whereas my Mac friends can't.

And no, breakage or failure has never been a major issue in either camp.

Generally speaking, my PC friends' computers are all much faster than my Mac friends' computers because the PC guys can keep up with the newest processors. And it's the same situation with the one researcher who uses a Mac in my department. Not only was his investment more, but the fact that he couldn't use the stock parts we have in the closet means higher maintenance and upgrade cost. As a result, most of us have extra money left over for staff bonuses and other goodies while his tech budget was spent.

Again, it's simple economics: Cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to upgrade, cheaper to replace.

But not really if you get 6 years of life out of a mac rather than 3 years out of a PC...it seems like it nets down to close to the same.

It is really quite to bad that Macs are such horrible boxes. I mean considering I could build a PC with the same hardware for $400-$600 and install Windows on it for cheaper or install Linux for FREE, Macs Suck. For those of you that don't know MacOS is FreeBSD that's been closed up by apple and given a new UI. And considering "Free"BSD is supposed to be "Free"... I have a problem with MacOS. And considering $1,000 dollars is a steal for a PC that should go for $600, I'll stick w/ my HP.
