Why wouldn't one do it? Considering that I would imagine standard DVDs occupy a large majority of the typical person's non-cable television viewing, why wouldn't they want the best quality for that? Heck, one of the reasons people love the Oppo 981 so much is that it outputs 480i over HDMI, so that their television/video processor has the best signal to work with in terms of de-interlacing and scaling.
If it was an HD DVD player, I would totally understand, however whats the point of trying to get the best possible quality out of something that is 420p and just being upconverted to, that doesn't actually increase quality, it just duplicates pixels to make it display at an HD resolution . Again, most HDTV's don't have many HDMI inputs, one or two on average, you would probably use those ports up for something thats actually outputting true HD quality video, such as your Xbox360 Elite, PS3, HD DVD Player, Blu-Ray Player, or possibly even your computer with equipped HDMI video card. Are you honoestly trying to say that the difference between a 420p video being upressed to 1080p is going to look better through HDMI then component or another input which is more readily available? Not to mention HDMI cables are more expensive.
