I have this exact same TV. I got it from Walmart a year ago for $598. I love the TV, I've never had any problems with it in regard to picture quality or workmanship.

I have had one issue which I've never been able to get an answer to that maybe you might want to know something about. The TV doesn't seem to work with copy protected HDMI signals. I bought an upscaling DVD player because the only way you are going to get a standard DVD to upscale is over an HDMI connection. When I hooked it up the the TV it gave me an error message about the copy protection and disabled the signal. I've never been able to get any other source to even show up over an HDMI cable. I had a Time Warner HD DVR box, a TiVo HD box, and an HDDVD player and none of them showed any picture or messages when hooked up to an HDMI cable. And since virtually every HDMI signal is copy protected, I eventually just gave up. The HDMI port on the TV is also at an awkward angle and difficult to plug a cable into.

Also, in case you were wondering, there are no VGA or DVI ports on the TV, so your choices are limited to component cables or HDMI.

Sorry, but it must be said:

Emerson equals poo.

Also, past experience dictates that since I do not get paid until next Wednesday, there will be a woot-off this weekend. Just sayin'.

Hey this is a picture commonly found in public places in the Indian Subcontinent.
Countries like India,Pakistan,Nepal, Bangladesh, etc.

They normally have a toilet where you have to 'squat' to do the thing.

So toilets where there is a commode(western style), are indicated by signs like these.

Totally agree. Plus, there is no 1080p broadcast whatsoever and likely won't be in the near future due to the extra bandwidth required. The exception is only for a very few DVDs and gaming consoles which are locally generated signals and not broadcasted.

I've heard of Emerson before, they were bigger in the 90's.

720p is perfectly fine for this size of a TV, in fact 1080p is harder (not impossible) to find in 32".

As far as the 1000:1 contrast goes, no it's not the best.

BUT if you're looking for a budget LCD TV this one isn't HORRIBLE. Reviews on C-Net seem to be a bit mixed. Just don't buy it with the expectation of getting an incredible TV.

This is perfect for:
• A bedroom
• A college kid(s)/dorm
• A temporary setup (like if you'll be moving in the near future but want a TV now to toss and not pack).
• Older people who won't notice the contrast ration anyways (i.e.: my boyfriends parents, they just want a flats creen to watch basic cable on)

Also, in 2009 those non-digital TV's you have won't work w/o a (potentially bulky) converter box. Keep that in mind too.

All-in-all, decent tv, great price - get it if you want a LCD but don't need/want a super high quality one.

Or if you want a new one, Westinghouse's are decent quality budget LCD's - sold at Best Buy and other random places.

Google is your friend folks.

I understand what copy protection is. That's why I was talking about copy protection. My point is that I have never been able to get anything to show up on this TV over HDMI and I believe it is because the TV is not capable of receiving an HDCP signal. Maybe I'm completely wrong and I just have a bad cable or something, but I have never seen anything relating to this TV being HDCP compatible and was warning people of that since virtually every device has copy protection.

No VGA?

Or am I just missing it?

That's the only way I was considering it.. but I guess if there isn't, DVI to HDMI adapters aren't hard to find right?

Would S-video work just as well?

Okay, about the contrast ratio:
I have my 37" lcd tv placed side by side with my 20" lcd computer monitor. My TV is 1600:1 and my monitor is 1000:1. As far as anything color related such as the range and balanced intensity of colors (even adjusting every setting) , my monitor beats out my TV every time.

32" 1080p TV: Offerings of these are fairly slim, but right off hand I know I have looked at at least a Toshiba + just about all of the high end tv manufacturers make them.

I THINK THE $399 IS FAIR SINCE THIS ITEM IS RELATIVELY HEAVY, AND THE SHIPPING IS ONLY THE USUAL FIVE BUCKS. ALSO FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE YOUNGER CROWD, EMERSON ELECTRIC WAS THE LARGEST APPLIANCE MANUFACTURER IN AMERICAFOR DECADES. THE NAME IS POWERFULL.

AFAIK you can't get high-definition content through a S-video link, especially the progressive-scan ones.

That's not true. You don't need a digital TV for the crossover, just a digital signal. As long as you have cable or satellite, it doesn't matter what kind of TV you have. The only people who are going to be affected by the switch are people with analog antennas or "rabbit ears". That's part of the problem with this transition. Too many people who don't understand the specifics are telling people things that aren't true. Google is your friend too.

From http://www.dtvanswers.com/dtv_faqs.html:

I'm a cable customer. Will I be affected by the transition?

Television sets connected to cable, satellite or other pay TV service will not require a converter box. Cable and satellite subscribers should check with their providers before February 17, 2009, to see how they are handling the transition.

Do cable customers with analog TV sets have to buy or rent a set-top box (converter box) from their cable company? If so, how much will it cost?

First, it's important to know that the February 17, 2009 deadline for the digital television transition only applies to full-power broadcast stations. The government does not require cable companies to transition their systems to digital. They can continue to deliver channels to their customers using analog signals. Actually, cable companies are required under FCC rules to offer local broadcast stations to their customers in analog, as long as they offer any analog service. This requirement will continue for at least three years after February 17, 2009. The FCC will decide in 2011 whether the requirement should be extended beyond February 17, 2012. This means that customers who receive analog cable service (without a cable set-top box) will be able to continue doing so.

Just use a DVI to HDMI cable, and then use a VGA to DVI adapter, a little half ass but it'll get the job done.

I've sold this exact television before. It really wasn't bad image quality, even compared to the other TVs in the row but after having out for awhile we noticed a lot of graining in our high def source. We assumed we had one television that was bad and returned it to the vendor.

The second television also had the grain and then started to flicker (which is sometimes a power supply issue on our end). RTVed the second.

The third had both problems and over the next 90 days we got about 15 out of 20 returns on it. If this is a respiffied it was probably a return from graining and flicker.

For a no name respiffied the price is relatively decent, but not GOOD... For 200 more at Costco you can pick up a Vizio VO32L 720p with 3 HDMI, VGA, etc. that I've been crazy about...

I just bought one of those converter boxes and it's considerably smaller than the box that I was forced to have when I subscribed to Charter Cable.

I'm looking at buying a 27"-35" CRT off of craigslist for somewhere between $50-$100 for a small apartment. What are thoughts on getting this instead? Worth the extra $350 for someone that watches minimal TV with an antenna and occasionally plays a PS2?

I have to say, once you get used to the Indian style (or Asian style, I should say) hole in the floor, "squat" toilet, you never go back. It's just a lot easier.

Better for the colon too..when you sit down, you put a kink in your large intestine right before it passes..when you squat, it is just a straight shot, and the shittin's quick and easy. Try it sometime!

I take back what I said earlier. After thinking about what I said, I got out my HDMI cable and hooked it up to my TiVo HD. At first there was no picture, but when I slowly started pulling the HDMI plug out of the TV and jiggling it around, for a split second I saw a picture. I continued to fool around with it and then got the picture to show up for about 10 seconds until a message came up from the TiVo saying that it couldn't display the picture. I assumed this was due to the aforementioned HDCP issue, but after another second the picture returned for about two minutes. After going back and forth between having a picture, an error message from the TiVo, and nothing showing up on screen, I have had a consistent picture for about 15 minutes now.
