I have the 52" version of this TV, and i dont care for it.

1. Its slllloooowww. Takes a long time to turn on and change signals.
2. Speakers are on the back, so sound is crappy.
3. There is a delay from media sources. ie: about 50-200ms delay when playing video games. Makes it extremely hard when timing is important (guitar hero or Super Mario)
4. 120hz looks funny.
5. Pointless clear bezel around the whole thing.
6. No VGA input
7. The auto-resizing is annoying.

Its a good price, but i won't buy another Phillips.

That Samsung LN46A860 someone mentioned earlier looks amazing...but the price tag makes me cry, as does the 90 day warranty for the current Woot. ;_;

Yeah, the Samsungs looks nice- but considering they're multiple times the price of this one, they had better be! :P

The last Philips retinker/respiffie...someone mentioned square trade only offers one year on retinker/respiffie.
That is repeating what was said...I have no direct knowledge..

and very little knowledge anyway....

This is a great TV. I have a 52" model and love it. Paid a LOT more than this for it and I am tempted to just purchase this for another room.

Do you have any experience with retinker'd Philips stuff? I'm really tempted, just don't want to burn myself..heh

YEP..but we are holding out for a Samsung.

I've seen um $1,375 for the 46.
and $1,749 for the 52.
Then shipping and sales tax weigh in.
factor in any discounts...like livesearch or whatever...

Frys would be cheapest I think..but some people don't like Frys and some want only if they can pick up..don't trust delivery.

fyi - fatwallet keeps up good discussion on best Samsung deals.

I'd love it if I could get something from Fry's, but the round-trip drive would take me a week or two!

I just paid 699 for a Sharp at xmas, and it's only 37". Even if respiffified, if it works it works... seems like a good deal, mine only does 720p/1080i.

i got the three year from square trade with 35% off on woot mentioned price using "SUPERBOWL"

BTW, the trick is if you have manufacturer warranty for 90 days, they consider it new. You have to select NEW in square trade home page.

Then you get the 3 year warranty !! for the same reduced price

Have fun!

I just bought a Philips 32" (32PFL5403) from Sam's for $498 a couple of weeks ago and love it. Too bad this one didn't come along sooner.

While my 32" is only 720p/1080i, that's fine for anything under 40". 1080p on this one is good and is a must.

Wish I had an extra $655. If you're buying this, I think you'll be pleased.

We had a retinker'd philips lcd hdtv for a while (different model), and it was a pretty good tv. If I was in the market for one right now I'd jump on this, its a good deal.

I bought this TV from WOOT earlier in like september when they had it up, and I love it. The only complaints I have about it is the sound is a little weak since as stated before the speakers are in the back. But the way I figure it is, if you have the money to buy a TV this large, then you have the money to buy a freaking sound system to run from it. Definitely worth every penny!

Anyone beside theplop have any experience with this set for gaming? I'm really looking for a fast gaming set and this might be it, but response lag is something I'm scared to death of... Can anyone else comment on their experiences with this?

From product-reviews.net:

When it comes to top quality LCD TV’s, Philips is one of the big boys and they have a massive range of superb Full HD 1080p LCD’s. One that has caught our eye is the Philips 42TA648BX, which has a 42 Inch LCD panel.

The TV comes with a resolution of 1920×1080p, this is the highest resolution of HD sources available, and offers the best possible picture.

The TV is at its best when watching Blu-ray movies, as well as playing the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3.

The Philips 42TA648BX 42 Inch 1080p LCD TV is not all about its picture quality, it is about sound as well and the 20 watts of sound is great when watching movies.

I also purchased this same televison the last time it was offered for $750. It is not a samsung or a sony, BUT, this television has surprised me. The picture is very good. For the person who mentioned vizio..this picture kicks butt on the vizio. This television arrived well packaged and w/o a scratch. You just need to do a firmware upgrade. I love all the posts from people who don't check the specs. Of course this has a digital tuner, and plenty of HDMI ports. As for the philips haters - I have changed my opinion. Philips has some issues and are not well represented in the states but I have purchased a number of philip products from wOOt that I have been very happy with. Tonight, I was actaully playing with the 10" digital frame I bought on sellout.woot. ( I also bought 3 of the 6in frames for $24 each) This thing rocks and the price was half of amazon. I purchased two of the already well thought of Kodak easyshare frames which are nice. But the Philips frame software left the kodak in the dust and the picture was 95% equivalent. But I digress. This lcd is SOLID. Again not the equivalent of a top samsung or sony, but better than most. And for $650, I am tempted while my wife is sleeping..shhhhhhhhhh

is there anyway to tell what the actual resolution ia on your tv? I bought a vizio and it said 720p in the store but when I let me Xbox or ps3 automatically set themselves up they set themselves for 1080p. Usually if your tv cannot handle it it just holds a blank screen.

NO. Wal-Mart does not sell this TV. The least expensive 42" Philips that Wal-Mart carries is $797, and not nearly as nice as this one.

It looks like this TV doesn't have a VGA input unless I missed it. But the feature list shows a bunch of computer screen resolutions that it can handle.

Several ways.

You can get a DVI to HDMI adapter (Monoprice.com) (cheapest way).

Or you can purchase a graphics card for your computer that has HDMI out.

I figure, if you can invest in even a cheap sound system, the TV is still worth it. I mean $650 for a 42" 1080 is NOT that bad a deal... even if retinker'd (or recertified)

Just fine, although at 42", 1920 x 1080 isn't that all that spectacular for text, webpages, etc.

30" LCD monitors use 2560 x 1600 resolution

The computer should treat it just like any monitor running 1920x1080.

You can get VGA to DVI adapters, but I'm not sure if you can piggyback analog out to HDMI..

What do you mean can hardly handle? On desktop in a 2D environment you'll be FINE but running games at native res with all the niceties turned up will require a beefier system.
