biciklee wrote:Can someone verify that these are accurate steps to upgrade to android 2.2? Minus the links that don't work.

1. Download the Ermine Update file for edge or pocket edge.
eDGe 2.0 http://www.entourageedge.com/updates...zip.ermine-0.9
Pocket http://www.entourageedge.com/updates...zip.ermine-0.9
2. Rename the file to "update.zip"
3. Place this file in the root (not a subdirectory) of a USB stick
4. Verify your edge/pocket is OFF.
5. Insert the USB stick into a USB port on the device.
6. While holding down the MENU and ROTATE buttons on the LCD side of the device, press the power key.
7. Continue to hold the MENU and ROTATE keys down for 10 seconds. 8. After 1-2 minutes you should see an "Updating software" splash screen.
13. After ~15 minutes the device will reboot and will be running the Ermine BETA build.

The addresses in step one(1) are no longer valid. It appears enTourage's web site is now totally shutdown. You need to go here to get the upgrade file.

In step three(3) you can use either a USB Stick or an MicroSD card. Several people have reported that they could not get it to work on the USB Stick(including me). The MicroSD card worked fine. This gives your an option just in case.

Aww I'm a bit sad to see they are sold out already. I was very close to getting an extra for myself or as a gift. I got mine for $120 the last time woot had them and I like it very much. Upgrading the os to 2.2 was very simple. I have downloaded quite a few apps that run well, but I mostly use it for web browsing on the couch when my husband or daughter are using the iPad. I think it is easily worth $80. Will keep my eye out for them if they ever show up again.

Wow, I didn't even look at that banner (looked like an AD to me).

This is an even better deal than amazon.com's 3-year warranty + accident protection

Total price through squaretrade w/ woot.com discount and SUNSET code (20% off):

  • $11.99 for 3 year warranty (standard)
  • $18.39 for 3 year warranty w/ accidental (spills/drops)

I think we covered where to get an upgrade and how to do it enough. But the question has come up why there isn't an upgrade app. Well there is, but since enTourage's web site went down it will no longer find any updates. Even when it was up, the only update was another version of 1.6. It would update from build "Dingo-1.8" to Dingo-1.13".

Version 2.2 was in beta and was never release through the upgrade process. When they closed their doors they decided to release the latest beta version. This was quite stable and many are using it.

The procedure given is an alternate way of loading new or older versions of the operating system. When you follow the procedure, the firmware will look for the file update.zip in the top level of either the USB stick of MicroSD card and start the upgrade process.

Entourage development would most likely have used this method while testing new builds to upgrade their test systems.

It would appear that enTourage's web site is now totally shut down. I would assume that the registration process will hang during the set up process. This procedure will allow you to break out of setup so you can continue. I will search the mirror site to see if I can find the manual procedure for completing the setup. I'll edit this post and add the URL when I find it.

Only older apps that are basically poorly supported any more.

Next time around I'll just get a Kindle. Easier to use, MUCH longer battery life, and fully supported.

Things I like about my Pocket eDGe:

  • Performance is snappy, even with multiple apps running. A key app for me is the free Watchdog Lite, which advises me to shut down CPU- and memory-stealing background apps that I should have closed properly.
  • The integration of the e-Ink reader side to the tablet side is well done. It doesn't feel forced or 'bolted on' at all. And the clarity of the e-Ink screen is a joy!
  • The 'hinge' is a marvel (and people do notice it). You can open the Pocket eDGe flat to see both screens at the same time, fold it closed (which protects both screens so that you don't need a case!), or fold it so that one screen faces you and the other faces away. My favorite position for it to assume is the upside-down "V" -- it can sit my chest when I'm lying in bed browsing or watching YouTube (or on my bedside table as a fancy alarm clock).
  • It has secure place to store the stylus. I actually like the resistive touchscreen with the stylus -- no smudges!
  • It comes with full-sized USB port in addition to the usual mini-USB that's used to connect to a PC.
  • I can have the eInk on the left side (default) or the right. I prefer the right, so I can take notes while viewing the tablet side on the left. I haven't yet figured out how to get both screens in the landscape orientation, but I've read that it's possible to get eInk to do this (if the Froyo upgrade is installed). What would be ideal would be the browser in the tablet side on top and the Journal in the eInk side on the bottom.

fxfuji

quality posts: 19 Private Messages fxfuji

Things I found (a little) disappointing

  • The screens get a little scratched up, even with the supplied stylus. If I get around to finding a screen protector for a resistive touchscreen, this won't be an issue anymore.
  • I can live without an accelerometer, but I wish they'd included an integrated GPS!
  • Some YouTube videos won't play on the Pocket eDGe, though many do.
  • Hulu and its kin seem not to have rights to stream video to Android devices. This is probably not the Pocket eDGe's fault, but something imposed on all or most of the Android world. Still, it would be nice to have a work-around, since I'm not restricted to only the mobile version of webpages.
  • It's a little tedious to compose technical drawings in the e-Ink Journal... I'm not sure why. Maybe the screen is too small, or the stylus isn't precise enough, or it's a fundamental limitation of the technology. I think it'd be very difficult to do something like da Vinci's notebooks on the Pocket eDGe -- even if you had his genius, lol! otoh, the Journal is perfectly adequate for taking notes, writing a personal journal, etc. I haven't yet used it to annotate an article or book.

The economics of this deal make it a no-brainer for me.

The Pocket eDGe was nearly twice today's price in the first round (in May), but I could rationalize it as paying $110 for an Android tablet and an additional $40 to get an e-Ink reader (and a stand-alone eReader would cost more than $50). That assumed that I could upgrade the OS to 2.2 (Froyo) and would use it mainly for web surfing, note-taking, and media (books, audio, & video).

I'll admit to being a litle concerned when enTourage ceased operations (mainly their website's forum and download page was what mattered to me) shortly after my unit was delivered, but my friend Google led me to a wealth of online resources -- a user community willing to help, the Froyo (Ermine) upgrade packages, the archives of the enTourage user forum, the Amazon app store, etc. -- so all was fine.

And in terms of performance and utility, this little beauty exceeded my expectations. It does what I want as well as or better than the current generation of tablets costing twice what I paid (or more).

At $80, it's now like getting paid $30 to add an e-Ink reader to that $110 Android tablet. You might argue that the price for a decent tablet has dropped to $100 or less now, but this is still a no-brainer deal imho.

I bought one for myself and several of my friends have purchased from other sources since. It is limited but useful for what it can do. (I have several computers and tablets and enjoy each of them separately.) I also read ebooks, take notes, use the Our Groceries apps for shopping lists, browse a bit and watch a bit of tv news video.

I had a problem a while ago in that it did not come on correctly (don't remember the details but the white screen others have mentioned sounds like it.) At any rate, I pulled out the bent paper clip, pressed the reset button and all was well. Just a suggestion that might work for some of you.

I've been looking into buying an inexpensive tablet for my young son to play around on, so he'll leave my laptop alone. Hopefully this is our answer! I'm a BlackBerry girl, so have very little knowledge of cool apps that all of you Android and iPhone folks use. I'd love any recommendations for kid friendly (3 years old) apps that you think I should download!
Thanks!

a reset is always worth a try,

I'm totally new to Woot, so know nothing about this. I've read and discovered that only 1 item is sold per day (usually), but at what time of day does it begin (EST)? I stumbled upon the GPS yesterday, but it had been sold out by then. I would have loved to got one of these dualbooks too, but again, was sold out by the time I came on. I noticed that the messages began at 1:00 am today, so that's nice, if that is EST, as I'm a bit of a night owl and 3am would be easier on me than 8am.

Solis wrote:I was hoping this would make a return when I last saw it for $100. Even though the company is defunct and the hardware sounds sluggish, the idea of getting a 7" tablet and e-reader bundled together for $85 when they're often individually that price is pretty tempting. I'm not sure whether my unsuccessful attempts to procure an HP 10" tablet makes this deal more or less appealing though.

Does anyone have a link that shows how to best upgrade to 2.2 Froyo on this though? I saw that there are support forums for it, but it looked like there was more than one and I'm not sure if they're all the same or not. For that matter, is it ready to go "out of the box" or do you need to configure an online account of any sort just to be able to use it?

Oh, and someone here said that the CPU only runs at 800mhz, but the description lists it as 1.2ghz...which does it actually run at? Could you overclock it from 800mhz to 1.2ghz otherwise? Oh yeah, and can you actually hook up a keyboard (or maybe even a mouse?) to the USB port?

I do not remember if I have ever tried a keyboard, but a mouse works fine. Do not expect a normal mouse cursor though, it just moves the highlighting around like in any android OS. It already has a 'trackball' though... It is the little black square on the right side between the two buttons on the top and the two on the bottom. It is an optical trackball with no moving parts except for pushing it in to click.

The e-ink side is stylus only, and it has to be compatible with Wacom(spelling?) tablets, as it is a true high res tablet and not a resistive touchscreen like the other side.
The tablet side works OK with your finger, and great with the stylus(any styles), but I often use my fingernail as it is almost as good as a stylus.

Battery life increases enormously with the upgrade to 2.2 when using the e-ink side.
Just open up the book you want to read. Close the case and open it up again, and the tablet will mostly shut down and you can read for hours. I never actually turn mine off, I just close the case. When I need to get on the internet, I set my Optimus-V phone to wifi hotspot mode and connect that way... If my phone's battery is low, I just let it charge from the Edge.

Rumors are that CyanogenMod is being ported!!! That is Android 2.3!!!

This thing will also read USB sticks and I have a Ethernet cable adapter for it.
edit
P.S. You can use the tablet side as a book light for the e-ink side...

I just tried plugging in a 1 tb drive and although it recognized that a USB device was plugged in, it claimed that the drive was empty. Nothing I tried allowed it to see the contents. Maybe a smaller drive would work. Or maybe it requires that the drive be formatted in FAT, which would make sense since flash drives are in FAT format. My drive is in NTSF.

The actual files are on a site called Dropbox. It is a file sharing site that people can put files on to be shared between their different devices. It also appears to have public limits on downloads. The link I put up must have hit that limit after I posted it. Not sure what kind of limit it is(daily, weekly,??). The message you get seems to indicate it will open again. When? Not sure. Need to find some other way of sharing these files.

I gave this gadget a pass last time it came up, because of budget constraints, but I grabbed one early this morning, and now I'm so glad I did! It's amazing how a thing not being available anymore can clarify a decision for you.

So far I like what I hear, but if somebody REALLY wanted to send me over the moon, you could tell me that someone has put together an NES/SNES emulator for this and a driver for a USB controller.

Nothing like a little nostalgic Metroid/Zelda on a long train ride, and I can't be the only one to have thought of that.

F**K. Even in the future nothin' works.
