I ordered three of the 250s. Two were not functional. Earphone connection did not work on one and the other does not allow me to download MP3 or movies. Not a good experience for me. Hopefully Woot will make good on these. I want good units - not a refund!!

Yea
I thought that that was pretty giraffe-like. Looks like I'll just be putting all those things in that cardboard box into a bag to give for a gift

Do you have to use their proprietary software with this, or can you just drag and drop MP3's into the player?

And FYI, for anyone looking for a refurb (rox0rz!) price comparison, Buy.com has (had?) the e260 for $59 and the e270/e270R for $69, refurbished. If you still have use of Google Checkout and it's still in stock you can snag the e270 for $10/GB...

thefinalprophecy wrote:Do you have to use their proprietary software with this, or can you just drag and drop MP3's into the player?

You have to use their software (Sansa Media Converter) to load pics or movies onto the player - it will only read certain formats (forget what they are). That's all it's for.

You can set the player in one of two USB modes: UMS mode will have Windows treating the player like a normal USB drive and you can drag and drop your stuff onto it, and the other mode will have Windows detecting it as an MP3 player and allowing you to sync it with Windows media Player (I think, all I ever do is drag and drop, so somebody will probably be along to correct me shortly...)

I refuse on principle to buy an MP3 player that rerquires me to install and use a proprietary program to transfer my crap over. iTunes can go right to hell.

This is completely drag-and-droppable. Media Monkey is a nice program to do the drag and drop with, though.

In for 3 ... just like I was for the 2gb units last month. Love these little buggers. Nice size, solid construction, decent sound, great battery life, drag n drop management, and FM radio. The only negative is that funky charge cable.

Gave my two girls 1 each and took a weekend roadtrip. They listened to them constantly and the battery lasted the entire time.

Mine, I couple with WinAmp and have it autofill from my main disk-based library each night.

I'll stash my 2gb now and use the 4gb (more tunes yeah!), give one to the girlfriend, and keep #3 as a backup. Might even experiment with Rockbox now.

If you're sitting on the fence about this, as others have said -- dive in. A good deal.

Hey nskripchun, thanks for the link to BoxWave. Didn't know they were out there, and they have some nice gear.

Woot, when I finally go broke from buying your stuff, can I come live with you?

I had the same problem with the earphones and the "refurbished". The earphones are absolutely awful. Anyway, now my main problem is figuring out what type of music I can play with the unit. It does not recognize or accept any of my MPEG or music from my i-tunes. any thoughts?

Purchased the 2GB as an anniversary gift for hubby. He loves it and we had no problems. Player is fine and works well. We were just saying the other day we should have bought two back then so I could have one. So now I have purchased one of these 4GB for me! I hope I am as fortunate this time around.

Apple ropes you in with the iTunes music. That music will only ever work on an iPod . In fact, most DRM music is like this for one company or another. However, you can burn your iTunes collection to CD and rip that CD as a mp3 file which is compatable with any of these types of players. This way you also have your iTunes as a CD collection

It shipped without product packaging of any sort and without some of the accessories that come with the new units. The earbuds were NOT the ones that ship with new e200 series units, but rather extremely cheap ones. Unit was stamped "REFURBISHED" in huge silver letters on the back, so it is not suitable as a gift. I have purchased refurbs before from other online retailers and have always gotten like-new items, but this Woot experience was horrid.

"Woot" is my new synonym for "rip off".

I bought two of the 2 gigs last month and was very happy. Granted the refurb (rox0rz!) so prominently displayed is a negative and the earbuds are nothing to write home about, but the unit itself is solid and easy to use. It was well worth the price at $30. I went in for 3 on these for gifting/resale. The value is there if one is willing to overlook the few minor nuisances mentioned.

Is it possible to play one directory at a time with this player? The only SanDisk player I've ever messed around with completely ignored the directory structure, but that was an older model.

Those silver letters come off. And yes the earbuds suck. However. A 4gb player for 55$ is a nice deal. Rockbox firmware is fantastic on this as well. I love my 6gb version sooo much.

This isn't a rip off. it is a sweet deal and I am sincerely tempted.

Curse you Woot! You just had the 1Gig version 2 weeks ago (MP3 player version) now you have the 4 Gig Media version. snort!!

The 1 Gig is about the size of a zippo lighter, allows drag & drop from WIN Media Player 10 & above (you cannot directly use ipod songs, but look at previous posts for how to get past that). This is much smaller than a Zune, about par for the size of a standard ipod. The built in FM tuner and voice recorder are dang nice features. Now I have to decide if pulling the trigger for another is worth it, especially with the better shipping method for this one.

The Sansa e200 series is wonderful. Especially once you put Rockbox on, which is really easy to do if you can follow a set of directions. I put Rockbox on the 2 gb I wooted in November, and after converting all my music to OGG format which that firmware supports, the little guy holds significantly more music than you would expect from 2 gigs. With a 2gb microSD and all of your music in the OGG or another small file size codec, I have about 6 or 7 gigs worth of mp3s on my sansa instead of the 4 I should have. Beyond that I think the battery life is great, and so is the sound quality. Video playing sucks, so keep that in mind if you intend to do a lot of that.

The letters "REFURBISHED" on the back of my 2GB from last month were actually stickers, not a stamp, and the letters came right off with a razor.

Amazon has a great Sansa e200 Series 5-Piece Travel Case Kit for $15.81 (very favorable reviews.)

Also, the information below was very useful:

I just purchased the refurbished e270 (6GB model) at buy.com for $59.99 total. That's just $5 more than Woot's price for the e260!

Cheaper than buying an expansion card, plus buy.com's refurbs include all the accessories that the new models come with.
In the description of what's included with the e260, Woot omits the:

  • Travel Pouch
  • Lanyard
  • CD-ROM
