Actually I'm quite happy with my XP set up with Office 2003. 2000 was good after SP1 as well. You're absolutely right... Vista should be more capable and secure. Let's hope it gets there after SP1. My setup is great, never been happier! ;)

No, that would be an updated program. Had it been installed originally under Vista, it wouldn't have been an issue. You just need to unlock the drive on an XP computer.

I'm seriously thinking about getting this machine for my wife who desperately needs a new PC. Couple of questions...

1) Is there any type of extended support you can buy directly from HP on this? Or some similar option? The 90-days on a refurb (rox0rz!) has me a bit worried.

2) I would put this in our office, but would like to connect to a Media Center Extender attached to our plasma TV. The HP PC only has 802.11b/g. Would there be a way for me to add .11n capabilities?

Thanks.

Man, you defend vista like your Bill himself. I do like vista, I sure won't mind getting service pack one, but I do like it. I am in the process of building a gaming pc (go ahead and gasp at my foolishness.. I don't mind) and I'm putting vista on it, in fact for the dx10. It's gonna have a 8800gtx, two gigs 1600 mghz dominator ram, two 150 gig 10000 rpm raptors in raid 0 config, all on the new 780 i evga mobo with 850 watts of power so I can sli easily in the future. This is my first build, so I'm sure I will make some mistakes, but I don't care. Gotta learn somehow, right?

Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then flingest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

U3 LaunchPad Installer

Download Instructions:
NOTE:

1. Create a folder on the desktop called U3.
2. Click on the driver link here (.exe file).
3. Double click on Setup.exe.
4. The install will pop up almost immediately and tell you it is done installing.
5. Click OK.

You will see some windows about it installing new hardware. Once these have finished your device is ready to use.

why does it say driver there then? this was taken right off the sandisk site... exactly what I had to install. I mean I realize that this is only for u3, but it's still a driver. When I posted about a driver for the flash drive, I just didn't take the time to fully explain myself to say that a driver was necessary for a program that was installed on the flash drive, and not specifically for the flash drive itself. Sorry.

Nope, not Bill. But he lives nearby, sometimes.
What Microsoft has been able to do with Windows is pretty phenomenal, given the range of hardware available for pc's. Your build should fly.
Vista is more hardware-intensive, but this HP is built for it.

Hard to believe, but Sandisk isn't supporting u3 in Vista yet. The removal tool is available for download on their site; u3 needs to be running to use it.

it's actually wrong, they need to update that part of it. Vista DOES support u3; I use it on my flash drive on my vista pc regularly.

Mostly IBM or Quantum or Seagates. No bottleneck there.
They are minuscule compared to the 320gb x2 in this computer. What brand of sata drive does HP use? Seagate sata's are good...

ruzickjc wrote:I have basically this same computer but I paid $1100 for it. It kicks ass! The quad core absolutely flies. For $700 you can't beat this. Mine is actually the m8120n which is the same except for a weaker graphics card, the 7300LE instead of the 8400GS in this box, but that is easily replaceable. Damn good buy, even if it is refurbished.

x2. I also love the m8120n, though admittedly don't do anything graphics-intensive. Got mine at Circuit City also for $1100, but glad I did get it locally, because the hard drive was bad, and CC just exchanged it, no problem, on my explanation. No packaging up and sending to HP. Amazing wireless keyboard (no off switch) and mouse (PC popup when it's time to change the battery)--have only changed the batteries in the mouse, and that's after 6 months or so.

Vista isn't bad, it's just the lack of device drivers for your old devices. If you have no peripherals or gadgets or apps that only run XP, then it's just minor annoyances that might bother some. I like it.

We buy HP's exclusively in the IT Dept. where I work.

What I don't like about them is proprietary parts. Power supplies in particular. One goes out and you are forking over $180 for a remanufactured one from HP or $150 for one on eBay. That's crappy.

refurb (rox0rz!) - got no problem with that. Watching a Refurbed 42" Visio plasma right now and listening through a Refurbed Onkyo HT receiver. Refurbs have been good to me.

8400GS - got one in my HTPC with 512MB RAM. The GPU sucks. You will want to upgrade it. Just an FYI.....I had better DX9 performance on 7000 series and some 6000 series Geforces. DX10 performance is abyssmal. On newer games this will severely cripple the performance potential of this PC....like putting a Hyundai 4-cyl motor in a Lamborghini. You will want to upgrade it immediately.

Processor and RAM - nice.

Vista - blows. Reformat and reimage with some version of XP Pro, and if you like the VIsta visuals, perhaps try TinyXP Vista edition. (with a valid license of course)

Just my .02.
