Have you been spending a lot of time with D'name?

Well, another day has passed and I didn't use algebra once.

Is that what you looked at?

Basically that guy is saying that the cat is alive and dead until you see the cat (because there is no way of knowing which state the cat is in) at which point the cat becomes what you see. I don't understand quantum stuff, but I hope to take a class sometime.

I am fairly certain the analogy vacuums.

Yeah. Like I said, I'm pretty sure I don't understand. Obviously, I don't understand quantum "stuff" either. However, I find I have no desire to take a class.

hey, on another note, I saw a post from ProfHotPants, who is tagged as woot staff. I've never seen a post from this person before, though I have a suspicion that she might be Mrs. Bug, from something I saw on Geek Life a while back. does anybody know?

I read Wikipedia's description of Schrodinger's cat. In fact, read some of it twice. That was enough to tell me I wasn't going to really figure it out.

Never heard of ProfHotPants.

Well that was a very fast walk for Maisy. It was pouring rain but I wanted to make sure she went pee (and hopefully poop) so we walked around the park in the rain. She was in a big hurry to get back. I made her walk twice around the pond to her disgust. Smells like wet dog in here.

Howdy all.

What it amounts to is that you can't really tell which box has the cat in it. It might be in either one, and there is nothing that can tell you where it is without changing where it is. Though it really only applies to extremely small particles. The particles that make up the particles that make up the atoms. There isn't more to know about it than that.

Dr. J,
I'm so confused. The wiki article that Dr. Star almost linked talks about whether a cat in a box is living or dead, not a question about "which box has a cat in it."

Dr. Star,
How is the concept the same? It looks to me like the experiment in the wiki article could actually be built, and depends on the "indeterminacy" of when an atom decays, which seems to be quantum mechanical related. I don't see how the scenario as described by Dr. J (one cat and many boxes?) has anything to do with quantum mechanics?

The concept is that you don't know. In any case it makes no sense when you bring it up to the level of cats and away for quantum stuff level/area.

I was one of the 2500 or so that got rejected at the last c r a p offering during the woot off. The woot dudes manipulated the data and figured out who had been incorrectly rejected then accounted for peeps posting from different IP addresses (from work then home) then figured out who were the first 500 to attempt to get the c r a p. Makes my head hurt to think about it but evidently they thrive on that sort of thing.

Dr. Star,

That's like saying that roses and blood are the same thing, simply because both are the same color. Yes, there's a common thing ("you don't know") but that hardly makes Dr. J's explanation relevant to explaining Schrodinger's Cat.

Well, take it up with Joe then, I don't really care.

Edit: if I was using roses and someone else was using blood to tell someone what the color red was, they would bouth be read and for those purposes be the same thing.

Dr. Star,

Sure, their the same thing if your talking about something very general. "red" would be analogous to "probability." Dr. J's scenario has to do with probability, and quantum mechanics has to do with probability, but I don't see how they have much to do with each other. Explaining Schrodinger's Cat with Dr. J's scenario is more like trying to explain "blood" using a rose. I suppose it could be done, but I don't see the connection yet.

I don't remember if I've linked to this for you, but since you seem to have an affinity for Japanese culture, you may enjoy Sake-Drenched Postcards: Reports from Captain Japan. As far as I can tell it's written by an American ex-pat (or several, perhaps) living in Tokyo and writing about Japanese culture. Sometimes The Captain ventures farther afield to other southeast Asian locations, like the "current" article on Phnom Penh (it hasn't been updated since December of last year; many of the other features on the site have long ago stopped updating, which is sort of sad because some of them were really entertaining). The introductions may be a little silly (but entertaining), but the actual articles are both informative and interesting.

Throwing out a question to see if anyone has an answer.

Before my mom was in the hospital, she had a hard time getting out of bed in the morning because she hurt all over. She was in four different hospital beds in three hospitals and it suddenly occurred to her she wasn't hurting in the morning. Now she's back at home and hurting again.

Obviously it's the mattress, but how do you go about finding the type of mattress that hospitals have? I tried Googling, but there's bunches of different kinds.
