Does woot charges sales tax? Pretty sweet deal.

Someone here suggested the westinghouse model off buy.com:

http://www.buy.com/prod/westinghouse-sk-32h240s-32-lcd-hdtv-1200-1-contrast-ratio-8ms-response/q/loc/111/208115572.html

It's just $430, with free shipping. But tax is another $30+ bucks which makes it $460.
Worth it? meh.

I've had this tv for a year now (bought it for $599 at Wal-Mart) and so far I can't say that it is a bad tv. It has plenty of options such as s-video which allows me to watch videos on my laptop on the tv, as well as hook-up my cd player for sound. Picture quality is pretty good too.

This is a great TV. Bought it for $550 or so at Wal-Mart about a month ago. It has a great picture and even a decent contrast ratio. It looked better than a couple of the Samsungs and Sonys next to it in the store and it's been working very well mounted on the wall in the bedroom. Emerson is known for using good parts too.

At $400 it's a steal.

I had the TV for a few months before I upgraded and sold it to my parents. Got it at walmart for $500 plus tax. Not a bad set. One problem I noticed was I couldn't program my Dish Network remote to work with this TV. Tried all the codes. My parents had the same problem. I bought them a harmony remote so they would quit crying about using two remotes. Other than that I never had any problems. I almost want to W00T one for the bedroom at this price.

I keep hearing that 1080p isn't noticeable on a tv of this size, and I do not believe it. You can certainly notice the difference between 1366x768 and 1920x1080 on a much smaller LCD computer monitor, so I'm not buying that you won't notice it all of a sudden just because you are watching tv instead.

I got a TV two weeks ago that looks identical to this except the name/brand at the bottom is "Element." (Same parent company?).
Anyway, the picture is a little bit dark, but it's been a great TV in general. Great sound, we sit about 7-9 feet away and it's a decent picture. I hook my laptop up to it via S-video and I have a headphone jack -> stereo RCA adapter and the sound is still very good.
It has four viewing modes spanning wide-screen to regular 4:3. The remote does not control other devices, but for a single function remote, it is absolutely fine and very functional.
One thing I like is that it has a self-sleep function after a number of minutes if it detects no input, so your TV doesn't just sit on all night if you turn off your movie and forget about the TV because the screen was dark.
It's also a decent weight if you have to carry it. I had expected it to be a lot heavier. Again, the only downside I've seen is the picture is a bit dark, but overall I have been extremely satisfied with mine!

At 32", 1080p is useful only for bragging rights (unless you set the TV on your desk and use it for a monitor).

You sit considerably closer to a monitor, so you notice the resolution more readily. For whatever reason, my parents' 42" LCD only accepts input from a PC at 720p (it's just how it is) and at normal viewing distance, it looks awfully sharp. I think you would notice it on a TV broadcast (none of which are at 1080p) if you paused the playback and stuck your face right up to the TV. You could sit there and nit pick it to death.

cothrjr24 wrote:i have had this tv since christmas. the picture is great. the sound is ok. it's been a good tv. the company, symphonic, was bought out by emerson (or vice-versa), and my tv actually says symphonic on the bottom. i bought it for $459 on the day after thanksgiving sale at wal-mart. the big downfall to this tv is there is only one hdmi output, which means you would have to buy a switcher to run multiple hdmi cables (like a dvd player or gaming system). great for the price. i am going to recommend my buddies to check it out.
on a side note: i did have to take my first set back. for some reason, the damned thing stop working after a day. the 2nd set has been great.

I bought one of these on black friday (2006) from Walmart also. It was great for about 15 months and then died. I found a very kind and reasonable service tech who unsoldered a bad capaciter (or something) and replaced it for a reasonable fee. So, it is fine now - but I was very fortunate to find a reasonable service man to handle the repair. Lots of shops want $80 or more to look at it. And many places refuse to even work on them.

dabomb wrote:Just use a DVI to HDMI cable, and then use a VGA to DVI adapter, a little half ass but it'll get the job done.

What? There's no need for 2 adapters, and even if you did go from DVI to HDMI to VGA or something, it wouldn't work. DVI -> VGA adapters work because the DVI standard still carries an analog signal along with the digital signal. HDMI is only digital, so converting from VGA to HDMI would require an analog-to-digital converter. It would be way easier and cheaper just to get a video card with DVI or HDMI output

Most macs in that era didn't have a math co-processor, either. 68030s and 68020s didn't have them built in. Most 68040s that were used in affordable macs didn't have them either. Though he could have spent a lot more to run that bomby Mac OS on a black and white screen and, most likely, not even have had the option to install a 68882.

beldenben wrote:I have this exact same TV. I got it from Walmart a year ago for $598. I love the TV, I've never had any problems with it in regard to picture quality or workmanship.

I have had one issue which I've never been able to get an answer to that maybe you might want to know something about. The TV doesn't seem to work with copy protected HDMI signals. I bought an upscaling DVD player because the only way you are going to get a standard DVD to upscale is over an HDMI connection. When I hooked it up the the TV it gave me an error message about the copy protection and disabled the signal. I've never been able to get any other source to even show up over an HDMI cable. I had a Time Warner HD DVR box, a TiVo HD box, and an HDDVD player and none of them showed any picture or messages when hooked up to an HDMI cable. And since virtually every HDMI signal is copy protected, I eventually just gave up. The HDMI port on the TV is also at an awkward angle and difficult to plug a cable into.

Also, in case you were wondering, there are no VGA or DVI ports on the TV, so your choices are limited to component cables or HDMI.

Did you use the same HDMI cable to check all your sources that could be your problem?
I had the same problem with my Cable box and TV changes the cable problem solved

I own this TV as well. My only complaint is that it is impossible to sync up the COX DVR remote with this TV. You will always have to use the original remote for Input, Volume, and TV Power. I've searched all over online, and no one can program their remote to this TV.

Other than that, everything has been great with it.

Wow, young crowd around Woot these days? Emerson has been around making electronics for a long time. My first tape deck was an Emerson. I won't claim that they make quality products, but everything I had from them did what it needed to do and had a reasonable lifespan. That was back in the 80s though when Emerson was doing very well.

They've been around for close to 100 years I bet, though originally I believe they mostly focused on radios. Looks like now Emerson TVs are actually made by Funai (anything post 2001) and what's left of Emerson has turned into just another label to put on Chinese products. Sad since it was original a fully American company. You'll find a ton of Emerson stuff at Wal-Mart now, for example.

1080p is stupid for anything under about 55"-60" if you sit at the average distance of 12'-15' from yout TV. Don't listen to the kids at Best Buy who try to sell you what their managers need to move. 1080p is great, but only in the really big stuff unless you sit 5 feet from your TV.

my 2 cents.....for that price, you can get a Westinghouse the same size that is 1080i

I got a 32" Westinghouse from eCost for about $399 and have loved it. Never had the reported problems with sound being off-sync and think the picture looks great.
