I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

Some pretty lousy reviews on Amazon. I think I'll pass & go for a brand I've actually heard of.

I've read the reviews...this forum had me convinced a while back to get a tom tom...but...this price looks great for a touch screen. I didn't see anything anywhere about updates, though. The reviewers at Amazon were harsh, but maybe because they paid 500 for it. You all won't steer me wrong, tho, right?

You do not have to. Click on the single-click comparison and disable your popup blocker. And voila!
Not to mention that there are ads on the Woot forum too - and I bet you ignore them. Just ignore them on my website, and you'll be fine. Unless it's psychological and don't want to use any website with ads, in which case I can't do anything.

Whatever... going to sleep, good night folks.

While I understand that people can be wary of new services when they appear, I've been there for a few months now and I was really hoping to get more respect out of the community after all this time. For example, I have never been asking for donations - unlike a lot of the other Woot-related websites (or even softwares).

No no, I don't think your getting what I'm saying, or maybe I didn't say it correctly. I personally prefer to see no ad's. Personally I clicked on a few of the ad's on your site, because I really do appreciate what your doing. I simply gave people the other choice to click on my links. If me posting the links offends you, I'm sorry and I will stop. Again I'm sorry if at first it seemed like I was bashing your links or your service, because I really am not!

I bought this a few months ago. SWEET GPS. As good or better than TomTom and Garmin.

There was a time when people said I have never heard of TomTom or Garmin. Step out of your woot world and start seeing new manufacturers.

maybe woot will put up some decent servers for cheap. And then buy a few from themselves for the next wootoff! People from states other than MN are funny. Especially those Utahianites!

You can use a small lead-acid battery connected to a car USB adapter (and charge the GPS through that USB port). That should provide you with more power.

To estimate the run time for this, calculate the capacity of the original battery in Wh (example: 1000mAh=1Ah at 3.7V is 1*3.7 = 3.7Wh) and the capacity of the new one (12V at 2.1Ah is 25.2Wh).
If you get, say, 45mins=0.75h of runtime with the original battery (when it's new - its actual capacity gets reduced with time), then you'll get (25.2/3.7)/0.75 = 9 hours of runtime with the new battery.
Which will be a bit less because you don't want to deep-discharge the new battery too much.

If you want something more lightweight (lead acid batteries are pretty heavy), use a li-ion laptop battery. Most are 14.4V, but I never tried using one and I'm afraid their built-in safety circuit will prevent you from doing so (I think the laptop has to communicate with the battery in order to use it). I did, however, do what I said with a lead-acid battery, and it works well (I've been using that trick to power my PMP for a 15h-long bus trip)

If you're into electronics I can send you the schematics of a low-voltage detector circuit I designed for a similar application. Whatever you do, don't forget to include all the needed safety features, the most basic one being a fuse right next to the battery terminals.

I never said it's costing much or destroying my life. I did say, however, that I do it to learn (learn what? Linux server administration and website design and maintenance).

Can we stop now? Im sorry I was freaking out, I had a bad day and I'm tired.
Peace and love. : )

Does anybody have any idea of the hackability of this unit? I.e., can you get the win CE system to come up to run other aps? Would the screen resolution be good enough for a backup camera?

Most of the time the resolution of the cameras is lower than the resolution of the screen used.
Typically, the backup cameras sold on eBay or in other places have a resolution of no more than 300 TV lines, which means that a 320x240 screen will display the signal without a loss of resolution.

I would be more concerned by the screen size than by the resolution (and 7" is good enough), because you want to be able to quickly see whats on screen when you're looking around - usually you don't care much about details, just about "is there something near my rear bumper"

A good feature for a backup camera screen is the ability to display the backup camera video signal automatically, using a remote-wire that is derived from the rear white light.

BTW, I suggest getting a black&white camera and not a color one, because the B&W ones are usually more sensitive and will work well at night and in low-light conditions.

I was close to pulling the trigger on this one until I saw the review on amazon where this units gives false voice directions that would have taken you off course on the highway.

HORRIBLE!!!! It will be nice if you are 80 years old. I took it out of the box from tigerdirect and repackaged at the same time. I got a GARMIN and I love it. The video play is horrible and so is the GPS. Why in the carp is WOOT selling this junk. I think the bag o carp is a better deal and cheaper.
