Has anyone else had the vision of a small terrier-like dog just being popped by one of these things?

You might be thinking of it backwards. The upper range of normal for systolic blood pressure is 140 mmHG (The machine here goes up to 250 mmHg). For diastolic blood pressure the upper range of normal is 90 mmHG (Machine goes up to 140 mmHg). This should be good for anyone needing to monitor hypertension.

It's medium to large, allowing for upper arm circumferences ranging from 9.1 to 16.9 in. (23 to 43 cm). That's larger than most cuffs.

You are thinking of systolic blood pressure.
The high end of normal diastolic pressure would be around 80.

Quote from johnnyLemonhead:
Will this work on my dog? Hear me out here: I have a small terrier, whose midsection is no larger than the typical adult male's arm. Assuming I can find numbers online for the desired blood pressure for the little guy, will this product work? It is still being wrapped around flesh, blood veins, etc. Should be a similar type deal, right?

BP cuffs work by compressing the artery until blood no longer flows. As pressure is released, the peak arterial pressure force the artery open intermittently (this is the systolic pressure, caused as the heart pumps). When using a stethoscope, thsi is when the first sounds are heard. When the cuff pressure drops below the sustained arterial pressure, the artery remains constantly open (this is the diastolic pressure, the "residual" pressure between heartbeats). When using a stethoscope, this is when the sound disappears.

Using this equipment on your dog's abdomen would likely cause damage to internal structures, since this cuff is calibrated to read human adult blood pressures. Even if it did not, I doubt you would be able to use it a second time on the dog.

Yes, some studies show that wrist monitors are not as accurate, and finger monitors even less so. A major source of errors is monitor placement. It must be at heart level to be accurate. When sitting erect (get the dirty thoughts out of your mind!) or lying horizontally, the upper arm is automatically at heart level so placement is not usually an issue. Patients, however, tend to leave their wrist on the table, making it too low.

Sorry dude, normal diastolic is near 80 and 140 is severe! If your diastole is 140 go to the doctor.

I'm totally impressed with everyone's response to the guy who wants to use it on his dog. Granted, it was a stoopid question. But it was probably well-intentioned. With only a few exceptions, everyone replied in a civil, polite, helpful fashion.

OrangeBug: The upper range of normal for systolic pressures is 140. The diastolic pressure is the lower number (ex. the 80 in 120/80). If someone's diastolic pressure is that high they are probably heartbeats away from death, so this should work for most people.

I'm a big guy - 6'3" 270lbs. (down from 335) and my arm is 15" at the elbow. If it works for me, it should work for anyone of similar or smaller size.

DIASTOLIC is the BOTTOM number on a blood pressure. 140 should be adequate.

I'll sleep on it....

Nope, you are mistaken.

There is systolic and diastolic readings. Hypertension is when SYSTOLIC is above 140. The ad may suggests it only reads diastolic up to 140 but that makes sense. Normal value is around 80, I have never seen someone with a diastolic even close to 140. Disclaimer: I'm only a 2nd year med student.

When you get a blood pressure of 120/80 it is Systolic/Diastolic

Sorry OrangeBug but a diastolic pressure of 140 is really HIGH!!!

HOWEVER, A Systolic of >140 is class I hypertension. This machine reads up to 250/140 which is great for this price.

That's because you're just a 2nd year student. Just wait until you take the boards ... You'll see your own diastolic surpass 140 as the exam approaches. 150...160 ... 170...

Good luck!
