I WANT MY Banjo of Consternation!!!

DeviantDragon

quality posts: 0 Private Messages DeviantDragon

Got my Banjo of Consternation yesterday, opened it today.

4x iGo adapters w/o tips
1x Grandpa Munster Action Figure/Doll
1x Lowepro Camera Bag

and...

1x ROOMBA DISCOVERY!

Real happy about the Roomba and I think it's an awesome thing to get on a first Banjo of Consternation. For anyone who's curious, there was no weight listed on my tracking info and I didn't weight it when I received it. Oh, and I had ordered 1 Bandolier of Carrots in the woot-off due to the malfunctioning "want 3" button and I emailed for a upgrade to 3

Mine came.

Got the broken Polaroid DVD-R thing... tried a HD I had kicking around, still just blinks HELLO.
Got a broken respiffied Zune. Opened it up, and it's all corroded. Plus I didn't reassemble it correctly. Heh.
Got a stuffed something-or-other. Don't remember what, and it is suction cupped to the window downstairs... too lazy to check :-P
And finally... a small digital camera bag... useful for the zero small digital cameras I have.

Oh, well. It was still fun. Wish I got a roomba... if anyone wants any of this, shoot me an email... my username at my username dot info, all lowercase.

Edit: Zune and DVR have been claimed.

19 x Texas Air
4x iGo power adapters w/o tips
1x Wrigleys Juicy Fruit Collectors thingy
1x Lowepro Camera Bag

Travel hub has a sticker on the case that states it is dead. I plugged it in, tried all the ports and it works fine. Wanted a Zune, but no complaints.

Before I give up and give this thing away... is there supposed to be anything connected here? And if so, to where?

So I got mad when I saw the smartpost link saying "USPS Entry" and I stormed up to the post office after work.

No luck... The person behind the counter couldn't find it even though I told him "It's probably a bigger box and it says "WOOT" on it.

GRRRRRR

If it says "out for delivery" or "Attempted" tomorrow, you bet your butt I'm going up there to collect!!! I have Woot stuff delivered to work for this very reason. More often than not, I'm at work!!!

I don't think so. I have 2 empty ports on the mainboard as well, but I don't even get the 'hello', nor do I get any lights. Does the drive spin up when plugged into the power socket?

hmm..
I can see the california people are still waiting...

Anyone closer to woot (texas) stil waiting on theirs?

I live in western arkansas.. right next door..
Still nothing.. the fedex tracking data says it arrived at their site.. in dallas.. a week ago...
no changes since..
arkansas and texas touch.. dallas is 5-6 hours from me.. at worst, the hub they would send to is memphis.. a day from dallas.. and less back to me..

==========================

And for those saying "UPGRADES GET EVERYTHING!!"
I was an upgrade during the last wootoff.. I definately seemed to get "less" than everyone who posted for that one..

This time left it at 1 (still couldnt get the 3 button to work) .. Just to kinda see how random it really is.. cause Ive never heard of a "1" order being 1 really cool thing.. they always seem to be junk.. while "buy 3" seems to be the only way to get a cool item(s) thrown in.
guess whatever my 1 is.. i may or may not see it..

Yeah. It spins up the HD I added, blinks HELLO for a few minutes, then it sounds like it reboots. The HD spins down and back up... blinks HELLO some more.

I am not positive either of the two HDs I'm trying work. One is an old 20 gigger from a Mac... and I can't remember the last non-laptop Mac I had... and the other is a 10 gigger from my grandmother's old Dell... which I couldn't get to boot for long enough to nuke the HD.

Also, I am not positive the HD cable I'm using is correct... it's the one from the dell for the CD drives, and I punched a hole where the sealed off pin is.

Nope, no need to worry about those two connections. Mine works perfectly with just the added hard drive and cables.

Oh a side note, those connectors that you're pointing to look similar to the unnecessary cd-rom audio connectors or a place to plug in an extra case fan on my computer motherboard...or something like that.

For anyone who got a Sansa with audio problems, I've posted a brief repair guide:
http://sites.google.com/site/brentgerig/sansa

This guide should work for Zunes with audio problems, too, but refer to the guide that ExMORTIUS posted above for disassembly. Headphone jack is pictured at the top-left of photo 9.

Any IDE cable (which is what you're using if it came from a cd-rom) will work after you punch the hole through the sealed off pin. Either your old hard drives are bad or the DVR itself is unrepairable.

I tried this after the last wootoff (I received 3 with bad left channels) and I could never get the solder to stick to the board. I also didn't have extra solder at the time so I just melted the existing bead of solder. It stuck until I put even the slightest amount of pressure on the jack, much less that I would exert by plugging in headphones. Could it have something to do with my dirty soldering iron tip? It was my first attempt at doing any circuit board soldering...and it failed.

Yeah, it might have been the soldering iron tip. You always want to make sure it's clean and well tinned. Tinning it means applying solder to the tip, than cleaning the excess solder off. Always have a wet sponge handy to keep the tip clean as you're working. The goal with soldering is to heat the pieces that you want to solder, and let those pieces melt the solder. I usually put a small bead of fresh solder on the soldering iron tip just before I work on the connection -- it helps the heat flow.

If you still have the bad mp3 players, you may want to try again, and in addition, superglue the plastic connector to the board to minimize wiggling. (If you don't feel like trying again, feel free to send them to me. ;-)

I've been trying to figure out the SmartPost tracking info I got - not that it matters. I got my Bo.C earlier this week, but I can't help feel that there's more stuff out there just floating around On SmartPost Pond. Please let me know if anyone can tell me how my carp left Missouri and arrived in Cincinnati on the SAME day it left Indianapolis and arrived in Wisconsin , or something . . . ?

Anyway, I got
1 Video camera bag
4 Tipless iGo auto chargers
1 Jumbo remote (with glow in the dark buttons!)
...and the Bo.C coup de grace - Mr T vs the Mind Thieves! (I think this is a 33 RPM record, though I won't open it for fear of ruining its value . . . )

Thanks Woot!

Oh, I'll definitely try again soon. The reason my tip is dirty is because I didn't have a wet sponge handy. That's a good idea about gluing the jack to the board. I was considering putting superglue over the faulty connection after it cooled again to see if that would hold it. Never occurred to me to glue the jack itself.

I'm pretty sure the existing solder is now dirty thanks to my dirty tip and I don't have a solder sucker. Any suggestions on how to remove the old dirty molten solder so I can put down a fresh bead?

Oh, also, any recommendations on what type of solder to buy?

If you have some old coax cable around that has the braided copper shield, cut a piece 3-4 inches long, strip the jacket and pull out the center insulation. Take the braid and lay it on the area to be cleaned and touch your iron to the back side. The old excess solder should wick up into the braid. Standard 60/40 rosin core is best for board work, smaller diameters are easier to control.

With all the roomba that seem to end up in bags of carp, does anyone wonder about the quality of the original product? Do they all really suck (in a bad way) and that is why woot keeps getting them to give away? Same thoughts about Sansas.....

4x iGo universal power adapter (no tips)
1x Lowepro camera case (very nice quality, and useful pockets!)

...and...

1x Infini 10.4" digital picture frame complete with fingerprints (a $249.99 value back in 1/8/07, which is the date on the receipt that's taped to the box.

3.5 lbs per fedex, seems about right.

It doesnt automatically buy items, but it will "I want one" for you. then you will have to enter your payment info and verify shipping along with select "I want 3".

Good luck, make sure you are signed into woot on your default browser as well.

I don't think so. Think about it this way: for every item every manufactured or sold, there's an expectation that a certain percentage will fa.il - fa.il to work, fa.il to play, fa.il to flash hypnotizing light displays, whatever. Fa.ilure, of course, could be caused by manufacturing errors, but also caused by shipping goofs (UPS could be pronounced "OOPS"), as well as user error. Now Woot! sells and ships more Sansas and Roombas than any company that I know of. Figure in the fact that a good percentage of buyers are pulling the trigger because of an apparent deal, not necessarily because they want, need, or understand what they're buying in the first place. Combine that with the fact that Woot! ships EVERYTHING for $5! $5!!! And you've seen how this stuff is packed. Are you surprized that there may be an unusually large number of damaged (soon to be "refurbed") items showing up in these Bo.C's??

I personally have bought both a respiffied Roomba and several respiffied Sansas without issues or complaints. Only mild jealousy of others given that I've never received either in a Bo.C.

I'm just sayin'.
