ugh. Just spent the last 1/2 hour up at the top of a 30 foot ladder, reattaching my metal roof where it had come loose from the eave. terrifying.

It's done for a while, at least.

Glad you are in one piece. We have 20 mile winds with 50 mile gusts - no ladder climbing for us!!!!

Just went to the post office, one of those little substations. Handed the lady a Christmas card and asked how much because it's bumpy. They looked at me like I was crazy. 42 cents. I pointed out that it was bumpy. 42 cents. I'm taking my cards there. Also a sign there, packages must be mailed by Dec. 20 for Christmas delivery. I figure if they can get a package somewhere that's mailed the 20th, they can get a card there.

nope, but I could see that it needs flashing by the chimney. no flashing = loose roof = blowin in the wind. I couldn't reach the top- so there's about 10 linear foot that's loose, but held down by the part I nailed lower down. I'm just sure that a strong gust is gonna get under there and pull all my nails out.

If I lived close by, I would help you, I have experience regarding roofs. I fell off one when I was ten.

Joe, please don't do that again while you are home alone. Small children don't count! Someone must be with you to call 911 if you fall off the ladder. I'm asking you nicely!
We are cleaning out the kitchen cabinets and we are at the most messy stage so I have to go back and finish.

had to do it today, while it was still warm enough I could hold the hammer and nails, and dry enough the ladder wouldn't slip. It's going to start raining tonight, and continue until next week, as far as I can tell. I had to finish it today. by the time anyone is home it will be dark, and it is already starting to look like rain now. i hate winter.

anyway, I am very, very careful on ladders. they terrify me.

That's one of those fabricated facts that means nothing. Name the second most common reason for concussions among adults. There probably isn't one, unless you play football or something. Maybe Christmas day when husbands get knocked around with the pots and pans they bought for their wives, I guess, but other than that, how else you gonna get concussed?

Like most car accidents happen within 5 miles of home. Well, most of the time we are driving around within 5 miles of home, so clearly that's where accidents will happen!

I bet 90% of all spilled take-out food happens in the seats of your car!

And the most common place to get a ketchup stain is in the middle of the front of your shirt!

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do something you should not do (like going up a ladder alone). If you call a professional most likely you would not even get a call back the same day and then additional damage would be done. Fear is a great compensating factor for additional safety.

considering the frequency of traffic accidents, including autos and bicycles, i have to wonder if traffic accidents mite be a more common cause.

Hubby worked for his father in HS and college and part of his job was installing TV antennas.
He doesn't go up on the roof anymore.
He'll go check the gutters, but he hasn't been on the actual roof in years.
Once you are in your 40's and absolutely 50's, you shouldn't be doing some stuff you did when you were younger!

Then again, the only two good workmen we have numbers for are an appliance repair guy and a roofer.

I'm in "wonderful" Michigan, smack between Detroit and Lansing, and a mom in her 40s who hates heights and ladders even more!!!! BUT there were 2 times when I did have to use a ladder alone (and I hated it), but I was extra, extra, extra careful on positioning, slippage, and climbing and got the job done.

Sometimes you just gotta' do what you gotta' do.
