If so, that would be great

The slacker subscription is so you don't have any ads, and you have more control of customizing your channels. You are not BUYing the music and you don't get to move any music to your computer.

Wooteelicious!

On average how long does it take for a woot to arrive after ordering? I'm leaving for an extended vacation early next week and was wondering if this will arrive in time.

My first WOOT purchase!!! I hate to admit, but I've visited woot for about 3 years now and haven't bought anything, but have loved the deals. I washed my Ipod shuffle in the landry and am getting this as a replacement.

I've been listening to slacker.com all day since I saw this deal last night. I love the comedy show, and figured that 50 bucks to listen to all the comedy will pay for itself

I think this is going to be a great player, since I listen to the ipod while flying from place to place, and I can simply lay it on the dash. then refresh when i get close enough to a wifi.

I notice the Woot description does not say it includes an AC power adapter. I was looking at Slackers website and on-line manual says it comes with an AC power adapter. I wonder if the Woot offer is such a good price because they don't include somethings that would have otherwise have been with the radio. Hopefullyk, Wood just didn't do a good job of offering up the details.

I truly hope this fails as miserably as the circtuit city DIVX movie rentals.

I'll put whatever I want on my ipod and skip as many times as I like, thank you!

I don't understand the whole concept of skipping songs as some sort of "feature" that needs to be limited w/o a premium subscription. The player is 2gb, it can only store so much on it. Once you have DL'd your music choices and are listening to them, what possible difference could it make to slacker if you choose to skip some songs?

Does skipping a song effectively delete it from the player? If so, does that mean that they have to stream additional music to you the next time you update to make up for the space created by the skipped songs? That's the only scenario I can envision that would make sense as to why you are limited to 6 skips.

Does the Slacker G1 Portable Player support WPA2 AES or not?

I've searched for an answer online with no success. If someone has a link, that would be great.

Skipping through as many songs as you like (including commercials) is a privilege. Slacker charges $7.50 for this privilege. Do you see what they did there?

Not really. If you're implying that the only reason they limit you to 6 skips is to entice you to pay $7.50/month for a premium subscription I find that hard to believe. I can see someone wanting to pay for premium to avoid commercials. I can definitely see someone wanting to pay for premium to be able to store songs that they like. I cannot see someone deciding to pay for premium just to have the ability to skip more than 6 songs.

From reading other posts, I understand that the Pandora service also limits the number of songs you can skip. As I said in my original post, I don't understand the concept of skipping songs as some sort of premium feature, but obviously there is some reason for it. I'm just trying to figure out what it is....

They're destroying Internet raaaaaaadio!" and start up a big ruckus so that artists and musicians don't get paid. For that alone Pandora vacuums."

What are you talking about?

The RIAA is about as concerned with artists getting paid as Louie Anderson is with skipping a meal.

"tweak royalties"???

Are you serious?

The originally proposed 800% increase is hardly a tweak. I am a full time musician with 20+ yrs in the biz and IMO the RIAA is a complete load of carp bent only on maintaining big label control of what you get to listen to. If the deal with the CRB goes through as is, it WILL kill virtually ALL independent internet radio by next May. How on earth does that serve the artists, or get them paid? Trust me, if slacker actually takes off, it's only a matter of time before they shut them down, too.

Oh, I agree with your comments about the RIAA -- they don't represent artists; why should they care about them? -- but none of this has anything to do with Pandora's battle with SoundExchange, which does represent artists, unlike the RIAA. SoundExchange has an 84-page list of artists who haven't yet claimed their royalties, incidentally -- if you're unaware of the difference, you might check to see if you've got anything coming to you.

You aren't understanding. These services entice you to pay the monthly fee to have the ability to skip songs. They know it's something the consumer wants to, and they unlock this ability once you pay their monthly subscription. The subscription may be sold under a "ad-free" title, but let's face it, people only pay to be able to skip as much as they want (and of course no ads is nice as well).

Does this really not make sense to anyone else?

I played with the slacker.com web site for a couple of hours and if the device is anything like the web site, it should be pretty cool. This is way different from an iPod since you don't have to have a huge music library stored on your home computer. The Slacker automatically syncs over the internet with selections from their library, replacing songs you have listened to with new music. Sounds quality appears to be much better than xmradio.com (if you are a subscriber). I'm in for one.

The new Slacker G2 units are much better (smaller size and more memory), but they cost $200 and up.

I think the limited # of skips is from licensing/royalty agreements with record companies. I don't remember these song skipping limitations existing before the big royalty hikes.

It's really not that complicated. I bought this model months ago and have had no real trouble. It stutters at the beginning of songs on occasion, but that hasn't bothered me.

You pick the channels you like and you also can create your own channel by choosing the artists you'd like to hear. You sync it and go.

You don't have to pay a monthly fee...and you don't have to buy any music. It does not stream, it basically goes off what you like and what you've selected and stores it on the device. If you change your mind, you can remove/add artists to your own station. You buy the device and that's it as far as what you pay. I never thought the commercials or the limit on skips was a big deal....I picked the music anyway.

When you start selecting your artists for your custom channel, it will suggest other bands you might like based on what you pick.

Now that's the good part. The bad part is that Slacker will list artists you can actually choose, but you'll never hear. And you can load up 15 stations on this device, but don't do it. If you really only like a handful of genres, only load those up...you don't have to put 15 on the device. You'll get more songs in the genres you like that way...there is only so much room on the device. I'm sad to say, if you like Trance or Techno, the selection is very, very limited...that was the real killer for me after a while.

I like the device a lot...and the concept is brilliant. My only beef is the weak selection in my favorite genre. You might have more luck on the front.

At 50 bucks, it's a good deal.

I have a little MP3 Player on which -for convenience- I have placed ripped MP3s of their favorite kids albums. It comes in handy in the car, on a plane or when we go away since I can play them over small portable speakers without having to bring a small pile of CDs.

Sine they like XM Kids radio, but it is not always convenient to have the sole XM receiver playing, I posed my question.

They do like to listen to music in the car -gasp- with their parents- surprising and disturbing as that may seem to you as well!

They are not duct taped to little chairs with earphones on despite what your mind's eye obviously conjured.

Your post offered no valuable input, but thanks for taking the valuable time to stop by.

Say I am at Starbucks and I don't have access to their pay-to-use wifi can the Slacker player still stream over that signal? Or in other words can it essentially leech off of WEP protected connections?

The player is designed to stream, it plays off cached music from the last time you were in a wifi accesible zone or at home. And no, you cannot update the device from wifi areas like starbucks that require a name/password.
