So, I had a delayed start this morning due to ice. I was happy and excited I got an extra two hours of sleep! So, I walk out to my car in a good mood all ready to go. Even when I see ice on my car I think noting of it. "Oh, haha there's some ice on my car. Poor car, she's probably cold!" I unlock my car using the button and all's well until I try to open my door. It doesn't open. koi! My car is frozen shut... I pull on it until I'm afraid I'm going to break the door handle off and walk around to pop the trunk. The trunk pops and I'm able to open it with only a little struggle. I consider climbing through my car (you can put down the back seat to get into the cabin of the car) to try to force the door open from the inside. I'm dressed for work, though and don't really feel like climbing, so I decide to make this a last resort. It occurs to me that I might need to pry my way in. So I take my keys and dig at the ice on the outline of the door and force it open. "Yes! It's open I'm good! I'll only be about 10 minutes late!" I climb in, shut the door, look out the windshield and koi! I can't see anything through the ice. I turn on the car (thank goodness it starts without issue) and turn my defrosters on hot and wait. This is taking too long; I'm late and it's not melting fast enough. So, being the impatient person that I am I rummage through my glove box (that I wished had contained gloves because my hands/fingers are numb by this point) and find old sunglasses, car repair receipts, an fm iPod transmitter and a plastic spatula-looking thing. So, I take the spatula-looking thing and start hacking at my windshield hoping that I'm not scratching the glass but not really doing much to avoid it. Thirty minutes later, my fingers are REALLY numb, but there's enough ice off the windshield to see through it... mostly... I'm nearly 45 minutes late to work by now, but I'm in my car driving the 10 minutes to work. That's when it all occurs to me - you had a 2 hour delay for work this morning because of below freezing temperatures and rain. You live in an apartment complex without a garage or even covered parking, OF COURSE your car would be frozen shut! OF COURSE you're going to have to scrap ice off your windshield! But, spending my entire life on the southeast coast of Texas these thoughts never crossed my mind before hand when it would have done me some good. So, I get to work and no one's mad I was late, thankfully! I was, however, made fun of all day for being a complete and total ditz...
Oh well, I guess I deserved it...
