And yes I agree, woot needs major improvement in customer service for returning, shipping and even business ethic.

How can you make customer pay for return shipping when it arrives DOA?

Or like the philips power squids on sellout woot a couple weeks ago, they put a picture of all black power squid up for sale, and then shipped yellow ones to everybody. How could they do that????

90 day warranty, re-fu rbished, possible poor packing/shipping damage, possible return at your expense, dealing with Philips tech support (yikes!), not knowing exactly what you are buying (color, style as pictured or ??), Too many variables to justify taking a $900 chance. But, if you are a gambling man, I suggest Las Vegas or Atlantic City

English manual downloaded from Philips has instructions, typical of sets that do. They can display all the time, or only when set is muted.

I got this TV from the Philips outlet about a month ago when it had a 14-day warranty. I bought a 2-year warranty from Square Trade for a little over $100. Makes sense to me.

Also, the "Soap Opera Mode" (Natural Motion) looks really good once you get used to it. As in, now everyone else's TV looks all stuttery and weird at "only" 30 fps or so.

You have to be careful with the big box stores. This is an old model = Panasonic Viera TH-42PZ80U. The 2008 model (Panasonic Viera TH-42PZ800U offers significant improvement : The PZ800 series meets the THX Certified Display specifications, signifying the highest standards of performance and quality. The PZ800 Plasma televisions feature an improved native contrast ratio of 30,000:1; Game Mode; VIERA Link; a PC Input, four HDMI connections and an all new one sheet of glass design concept. Plus the screen is rated for a much longer life (100,000 hours). I agree that plasma puts LCD to shame and all the knocks against plasma have been fixed (screen reflection, short life span, and burn in. I own the 50" equivalent (Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ800U and it is stunning.

Hi guys, I don't generally post stuff but I love the site and love buying from here!
Anyways I just wanted to kinda let you know about the TV ect.
I actually worked for Philips a few years back as a tech supervisor.
(No this is not some sort of rant against Philips I actually like/liked a lot of their ideas and products =)
First, this is NOT a true 120Hz at least not how you are thinking.. The 120Hz is achieved by the double frame rate insertion. It is copying the same frames over again to give it that effect.
Same goes for the 2ms response.. It is not a true 2ms.
HD Natural Motion will make everything fast paced look terrible. It basically adds a frame after each frame. Not a copy of the previous frame but a filler frame to kinda bridge the gap of the movement between each frame. Which in turn gives it the blurry slow motion effect.

Last..
If you plan on buying a retinker buy an additional warranty.
Back when I worked for Philips they had HUGE problems with their Plasmas and Lcos systems... so much so that they ended up forking out a ton of money for new model replacements on all the repaired and retinker models.
Honestly I haven't worked there for several years so I don't know how well this specific model is but I would be 100% weary of any retinker from Philips.
Plus NA Philips video products is now run by Funai ...

They'll be pricey, but you're right: MUCH better. However, I am going to save my pennies for the pure OLED sets, like Sony's 11" for $2500. I want at least 42".
120hz?? why in the computer and video sections does it only say 60, what am i missing???
I want to know the same thing. How is that possible? That has to be a typo right? I mean you can't have a tv with 120hz but, oh, by the way, if you plan on hooking up any kind of video source it's only going to be able to do 60hz!

I do not own any Big appliances that have the name phillips on it.

But I do have alot of the small things IE: A Razor, a toothbrush, a portable mp3 player.

probably some more items that have been tossed already.

my 100.00 sonic care toothbrush is NOT WORKING any longer, My MP3 player ( I have two actually Just got them for the kids for christmas) actually MELTED the head phone sets! I don't know if its distortortion or the head phone sets or what But they get hot and melt right on your freaking ear! " yes the head phones say Phillips on them as well"

The Razor- 1060Xd <-- Worked great for two months - Now is the box with tooth brush - hangs up and runs like dookie ( Went right back to scraping my face with a blade )

If the Phillips co wanted me to buy this or any or any other high dollar Item you would think they would make thier neme better by making these everyday products worth the money I paid.

i am in the process of getting my moolah back for the Mp3 players. I almost wooted the sandisks the other noight but I decided I best wait till i get these returned - everyone was saying how they are not all that rare on here so Hopefully they will woot me one more time on those little buggers - Or maybe some recertified ZUNES???? has that ever happened?

Or a Fuze? :O) those are cool.

I'm going to go fire up my VVega and watch a movie - it cost me more sure - but it has a 5 year warranty and I can plug anything I want to into it. HA!

Great question.
To understand the answer, you must first realize that there are two sides to this coin.
1) What signals can a device understand.
2) How a device (TV, projector, or monitor) displays stuff on it's screen.

For the first part, if a signal is to be generally understandable, it must conform to a standard. Most computer video cards and video games only output the mentioned resolutions at 60Hz. While some video cards are capable of outputting those resolutions at 120Hz, those formats are non-standard... mainly because it would've required cards to have lots of very fast video RAM... which was very expensive when those standards were set. Can this TV understand an input signal that has a 120Hz vertical sync rate? I don't know. BUT I wouldn't expect Phillips to include non-standard rates in it's compatibility list. One would just have to try it... IF (an unlikely if...) you could find a camcorder, or whatever, that output 120Hz analog video. Digital video has different standards.

As for the second part, how a picture is placed on a screen, it's mainly a matter of timing. First there are horizontal and vertical synchronization pulses (along with video data) in an analog video signal. The H sync pulses enable the set to place the video data on horizontal scan lines across the screen. The number of H pulses equal the number of scan lines (In this case, up to 1080). The V pulses determine how many screens per second are displayed. If the display is interlaced (i), the even and odd scan lines would be alternately displayed. So at 60Hz, you would see 60 half pictures per second, or 30 (ever so slightly jiggly) complete pictures per second. Non-interlaced displays (now called 'p' for progressive scan) would display 60 complete screens per second... with greater clarity. 120Hz TVs would display 120 screens a second... provided there was 120 frames a second available to show... which is possible with a digital interface. But if there were only 60 frames, then it would show each one twice. Either way, progressive scan at 120Hz produces surreal clarity, which is quite remarkable... and summons a higher price tag!

So, the bottom line is this...
If you walk into a TV show room, that has the same video feed on multiple sets...
and some look great, and a couple look incredible, the 'couple' are most likely 120Hz sets. The difference is unmistakable.

Are you being honest? Fry's as the best place for Tvs and PCs? i think you have never seen the HUGE lines in customer service, or all those "recertified" koi they have out there. I Love to go to Fry's but just to actually see and feel how the new stuff works. Besides that, Fry's has no chance over ANY other website/store. VERY bad retail store.

Had such a bad experience with another Philips TV, I won't even consider buying another one. The Customer Service was almost non-existent. It took over 6 months to get my TV back, only to have the same part (Original content not provided.) three weeks after the warranty expired. I paid over $350 to have that one replaced, only to have it (Original content not provided.) again within a year.

Yes, currently this EXACT television is $1194 at Sam's Club: http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=403301&pid=_Froogle&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=339334

But at at our sams club last week they had this EXACT tv on a one time sale for $997 new.

I purchased the 42in philips 1080p 60hz retinker for $750 from wOOt sometime back and it is actually a very nice tv. No, it is not a samsung or a sony, but you will be very surprised at the picture quality. As foer the re-spiffied part. Mine came without a scratch, well packaged and has given me not a bit of trouble. Just make sure you upgrade the firmware on these if you purchase.

I bought the 47 inch 60 Hz about a year ago for 1600 bucks. This has so far been a very well-performing TV.

I would consider the upgrade if I had the 900 bucks lying around.

I bought this TV from Philips Outlet in December.

This is a great TV! My sister has the Samsung 46" 650 Series, the thing I hate about the 650 Series is the shiny screen. This Philips has a matte screen and a great picture.

I just watched the Ravens-Steeler's game last night in HD on this, incredible! No motion blur, great color, deep blacks.

Mine was refurbished also, it arrived in a plain brown box, but well packed and in like new condition.

It had the latest firmware loaded, no issues whatsoever.

Compare this to the highly rated Samsung LN46A650 which is currently selling for $1500 on Amazon, this purchase is a no brainer!

Samsclub currently has this Philips TV in store for about $1300, plus you have to pay tax and cart it home.

Check the web for reviews on this TV, there aren't hundreds of reviews like the Samsung's, but the reviews available are all excellent. I suggest checking Amazon, Dell, and Samsclub sites for reviews. Search for 47PFL7403D/27 or just 47PFL7403D.

If you are in the market for a big-screen TV, get this before it is gone!

My 2 cents

MNBeta03

quality posts: 5 Private Messages MNBeta03

I am in the market for a TV right now but this is not a good price for a refurbished and the warranty is too limited. Sam's Club actually had this model new for $1200 and the threw in a blu-ray dvd player ($200)so the price really isn't that great.

If your a gamer or an avid movie watcher its well worth your while to go with top end tech - Samsung and Sony are battling for the best of breed in the LCD TV arena.
