To the people who are saying this is a placebo you have never had constant muscle spasms & neuropathic pain in your back. It aches/throbs & radiates pain constantly. This sends electrical impulses & basically confuses the brains interpretation of the pain signal while being worn. It just gives my tired muscles a break & can really cut back on the amount of muscle relaxants or pain meds if used correctly. On long car trips I always wear my Tens unit because those are really hard on people with back problems. Hope this helps.

To the person asking about safety during pregnancy, I would recommend against using it. I work in health care and pregnancy is a contraindication for all electrical modalities. At least check with a doctor prior to using it, better safe than sorry no?

FYI - this product is specifically designed to MASK pain, NOT relieve it. The two things it does are block pain signals from reaching the brain and increase endorphins. If you actually have back pain, find something that will get to the source of your pain.

Yep. You're wrong. Sorry. : )

I've used TENs units personally, from the small Walkman-sized one to the one at PT clinics that have to be plugged into the AC (GOOD TOY! WOO WOO!!!), and you ONLY have to replace the pad(s) when they lose their stickiness. Figure with daily use, and if you're a CLEAN PERSON (IOW: Bathe and dry the area being TENSed and COMPLETELY DRY(!)), you should be able to get a good 2 months out of each pad (if not more).

HINT: If the STICKINESS wears down, you COULD use a small dab of DIPITY-DOO or any other HAIR GEL (the El-Cheapo stuff from the .99 CENT stores works PERFECTLY! A tub of the stuff for a buck?! JACKPOT!) with a NO-LONGER STICKY PAD (IOW: Don't throw the used pads away after they stop being sticky!).

Talk with your DR (or PT) before taking ANY advice no matter what (we're ALL different).

God bless, KINJIRU

waacodemon wrote:Please correct me if im wrong...
BUT!
You have to get replacement pads
they cost 19.99 for 4
You can use the pad only one time.
So, seein as i would have to use this daily, seems to be a big money pit?

Hello... P L A C E B O !

Well actually the placebo effect works quite well if you believe it, (I am NOT saying that is what this product is). I have a friend that is always telling me about this alternative Dr. she goes to and what he does. It makes me cringe because I know it is worthless, but she claims it really helps her so I never say anything to doubt it. Why should I since I do believe she is being helped by this Dr. and his placebo effect.

I can say the style of treatment works.
I've had some chiropractors use it before.

I feel for ya on the 'some days are better than others' part. I've got an extra vertebrae so a wrong move can pull my muscles (somehow makes my lower back muscles weaker than usual).

The treatment this thing does actually works.
Mine was coupled with having my spine realigned so its less likely to act up.

Since this is something you're doing without professional assistance just use it for what it's for and you'll feel better for it.

Seriously- I live with chronic back pain with it affecting my right leg. I can't stand, sit or walk long at all. I have had surgery but to no avail, I am in bed most of the time and meds too. If there is a chance this would help me I would get it but if it's just a tens unit I already have 2. IS there a difference in this and a tens unit?

For you that just think this is a bad back ache then you do not know what we are talking about, this is completely different- it's a life altering change when this happens to you.

OK...I use a full size one at my chiropractor 3 times a week and was actually discussing whether or not one of these would be nice at home....

If it gets anywhere near the power as the one at my doc...it will be awesome....

it relaxes and stops muscles spasms....etc...etc...etc...and feels freaking great...I am thinking hard...may just have to buy it!

I know when I had to purchase my first one it was $600, after surgery they gave me another one... guess somewhere in the bill I was charged but not sure how much. I was just wanting to know if this is a tens or something like a tens but better, still wondering about the book and if it would really help.

I lift fairly heavy and the soreness usually starts the day after workout and lasts for about 2 days, during which time I am kind of shut off from hitting those muscle groups again. It would be so nice if I can selectively use this on different muscle areas, and not just my back... any suggestions?

I suggest buying protein powder and having a scoop of that with milk within a half hour after your workout. It tastes good and it takes a lot of the pain away from soreness.

Shouldn't be a problem. If required just send along a copy of the Instructions or the like - their bound to state repeatedly that this is a medical unit.

You can always print out the following from the FDA website and include them:

From the Code of Federal Regulations Part 21 (the Law that governs the FDA) TENS Machines are defined as Class II Medical Devices and regulated by the following:

I've had chronic back pain for 9 months. I've seen doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists. Now that I'm armed with MRI results (finally), the maxim "keep your tummy tight" simply won't fly anymore. I have significant spinal problems from L1 to S1. Soon I will be seeing a doctor for steroid injections and then a neurosurgeon. When a person has endured pain for a long time, he/she is tempted to buy almost anything to alleviate it. I know a TENS unit has helped many people manage pain. I wouldn't fault anyone for trying. Some days I think I would have bought and drank dishwashing liquid infused with gasoline if some shyster had convinced me it would help.

As a potential patient, I would ask that you identify yourself. A medical professional "in training" who thinks that using a forum name like "breasticles are cool" is not professional and I would not want you to be a medical care provider for anyone I know. TENs are not recommended for pregnancy at all. It sends electical stim and last time I checked it's not good to shock a baby. Buy your wife a gift card to the spa and get a relaxing massage by a certified therapist and stay away from trigger points...they can induce labor.

I actually called about this and was told we would have to fill out a form with our doctor's signature for approval. So as long as your doctor approves it, you should be covered.

waacodemon wrote:Anyone have/tried one? Do they really work?

Im 20 years old, and have had back pains since i was like 16... seen several chiropractors and all, but my back hurts like literally on a daily basis, it suucks so much. I just dont wanna fork up 55 bucks, and have this be a piece of carp

Well, I'll tell you a bit about my situation and I hope that it helps someone.

I'll give you some insight about what a TENS unit has done for me. I had a serious back injury prior to a deployment. I've had two spinal fusions with hardware (at 30 yrs old) so far to fix the problems in my back. There have been times that a TENS unit has helped take my pain level down a notch or two when the pain was nothing short of unbelievable. I've told my doc that even it's just a placebo effect, it seems to have helped. If you're not dealing with SERIOUS problems requiring surgery, then you may get some benefit from this thing.

What does it do? It releases bursts of electricity through the electrodes into the skin. Depending on the type of unit, you may be able to vary the pulse width, type, and intensity (all of them have the last one as far as I know). I've got two now, one old skool one with knobs and a neat digital one.

Does it go up to 11 (BBC joke higher up in the thread)? You bet your sweet a** it does. You'll think it's 11 when you turn it up even halfway. Speaking from experience, it can be pretty intense when you're first starting out.

I can definitely say that the TENS can help. I can't say how well, and many people may get far better results than me. I was dealing with some pretty serious problems (like barely walking at all even with a walker) before this last surgery so I don't think anything would completely do the trick.

I can give some advice about the use of the unit:

This can be helpful if the pain in deeper in the area of a disc rather than muscular. Cross the electrodes on your back like an X so that the electricity comes to a point where you're hurting.

Do NOT climb in a car unless you are sure that the electrodes are fastened properly and have good contact. Moving an electrode to a different spot even a millimeter can change the game completely. You can find yourself in a bad situation very quickly if one of the electrodes suddenly "connects". Take note if you're having to suddenly turn the unit up higher than you normally put it. That's a good sign of "wrongness". Imagine putting fire ants in your jeans. Begin driving. How fun would that be?

Best advice? Go to a physical therapist for an evaluation. A physical therapist can tell you better if it's right for you and how to properly wear one. Best thing I ever did.
