quote from wikipedia lower # is not bad

Uses

Bluetooth is a standard and communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption, with a short range (power-class-dependent: 1 meter, 10 meters, 100 meters) based on low-cost transceiver microchips in each device.[2] Bluetooth makes it possible for these devices to communicate with each other when they are in range. Because the devices use a radio (broadcast) communications system, they do not have to be in line of sight of each other; they can even be far apart if the transmission has sufficient power.[1]
Class Maximum Permitted Power
mW (dBm) Range
(approximate)
Class 1 100 mW (20 dBm) ~100 meters
Class 2 2.5 mW (4 dBm) ~10 meters
Class 3 1 mW (0 dBm) ~1 meter
In most cases the effective range of class 2 devices is extended if they connect to a class 1 transceiver, compared to a pure class 2 network. This is accomplished by the higher sensitivity and transmission power of Class 1 devices.
Version Data Rate
Version 1.2 1 Mbit/s
Version 2.0 + EDR 3 Mbit/s
WiMedia Alliance
(proposed) 53 - 480 Mbit/s

So, if your printer has a USB port, can you buy two and use one dongle to make the printer wireless and put the other dongle in your laptop/PC?

Two characteristics you may want to consider when purchasing a Bluetooth adaptor are its data transmission speed and its range.

The data transmission speed of a Bluetooth adaptor (a.k.a. dongle) depends on the adaptor's protocol version. The products that sell today are either Version 1.1, 1.2 or 2.0, with the last two being more dominant. Version 1.2 operates at speeds up to 0.7 Mb per second and Version 2.0 operates at speeds up to 2.1 Mbps (3x Version 1.2 speed).

Bluetooth adaptors also have a 'Class' rating which determines their range. Oldest (and now obsolete) class is 'Class 3' which had a range of 1 meter (~3.3ft). Today you can find products that are either 'Class 2' or 'Class 1'. Class 2 Bluetooth devices transmit up to a range of 10 meters (~33ft), while Class 1 devices transmit up to 100 meters (~330ft). Classes are not version specific; older Version 1.2 adaptors are Class 2, more recent 1.2 and 2.0 Versions are Class 1.

An important thing to keep in mind when buying a Bluetooth adaptor is that neither the connection speed nor the range of your network will fully be determined by your adaptor. After all, it's a network and the receiving device also has a thing to say (bottleneck issue). A Class 1 , Version 2.0 dongle, for example, will not perform up to its maximum range (330 ft) or maximum data transfer rate (2.1Mbps) if it is paired with a receiver device (headset, printer etc..), that is Class 2 and that is Version 1.2. The speed and range of such a network will be closer to the inferior values in each category, in this case closer to those of Version 1.2 and Class 2. However such a network should still work fine because the version and class protocols are backward compatible; units with newer protocols will work with units with older protocols.

To sum up, buying the adaptor with the best features will not necessarily make your Bluetooth network faster or further reaching unless it is paired with a receiver device that is equally advanced. Today, for example, almost all Bluetooth headsets you can find in the market are Class 2 (for practical power saving purposes, since these devices need regular charging) and hence will not work at distances much more than 33ft even if they are paired with Class 1 adaptors.

Thanks for the story. So do I buy this or not?

Oh, well. At <$10 for 3, I WOOTed before I read. Looks like the tiny stubby ones that support 2.0 are a better idea (if they work well, and if they last).

The BT being only v1.1 isn't a big issue for me in this case, because I just want to be able to use my BT mice across all platforms. I'm a big "inadvertent trackpad sweeper" when I type, so it's really nice to turn it off when doing serious typing.

I seem to have accumulated a lot of cheap laptops that are still useful, but lack BT.

Heck, I needed at least one for my WOOTed $300 laptop from a couple of weeks ago, right?

;-)

Not to quibble, but at a price that is less than a cheap cup of coffee, why not get a third and toss it in a drawer or give it away.

At these prices seems three is they way to go, especially since getting one or two results in a higher per piece cost, since shipping is $5 whether one gets one or three.

My suspicion is that being 1.1, these are old and outdated. I would think Vista 64 bit would not be supported.

Just a thought.

In for three since I recall paying $20 for just one of these two years ago.

No 2.0, which means no stereo. But then again, $3.35 each (after shipping) is great since I have friends who can use this (people with no BT at all on their notebooks and desktops).

Ordered three, and don't anything about BlueTooth. I got a photosmart 616A from Sellout, that needs a BT450, will this work instead? Also have a digital picture frame that mentioned a Bluetooth option. Just wondering if the device has the option and a USB port, can pretty much any Dongle work? Or are they device specific. Would be pretty cool way to lose some of the cable and card swapping

I just bought one from Focalprice at $2.70 free shipping. And it's 2.0.

Why would you buy this unit? Even if I bought three from Focal it's still cheaper and 2.0 vs 1.0.

My first Woot. I'm in for 3. One for the desktop, one for the laptop and one for roommate's computer.

Why, well I won't preach TOO much. Because I don't NEED 2.0 A little bit of data transfer, little bit of backup and a little bit of peripheral device use. Why here and not someone else? Because every dollar right now does help stimulate the economy. Money that stays in America does help keep jobs from Woot to shipping. We're borrowing enough right now from China without giving it away to them. For the extra dollar for three, I'm more than happy to buy from Woot.

I hate to break it to you, but they all come from Asia. It doesn't matter if you buy from Woot or Focal. The only American portion of this is the distributor (Woot, Focal or any other "seller")

Yes you can trace the start of almost everything computer related over seas, but keeping the money as close to home as possible is a start. Rather than giving it directly to china
