i thought the ada just says they have to make reasonable accommodations. they are getting him a bigger monitor.

If you haven't told anyone that you're disabled, then you aren't considered disabled by the ADA. But, it may be that if you told human resources that it would help with your vision problem if you had a bigger monitor,then you probably have effectively called yourself disabled. In that case, I think they have to treat you as if you are officially covered by the ADA.

If you are, then they are required to make an attempt to accommodate your disability. If they can make it so that you can work and do your job, then they are obliged to do so. I'm pretty sure.Probably if the 30 inch monitor doesn't make it so that you're comfortable reading the screen, then they would be obliged to get a bigger one.
It may be that someone decided to order the smaller monitor on the off chance that you'd reject it as not doing the job. Then, someone else would get the 30 inch monitor when your bigger one arrived.

Why did you decide on installing new appliances instead of offering money for them?
