Sounds like a good application, but I'm not sure how to pull it off. Since the lights are a "dumb" device that simply pulls power from the USB port, then you'd have to have write the program so that it turns off power to the one port (and only that port) via software, right?

yes. . . that is the most reasonable approach I think.

Nice... but I don't have random USB control boards just sitting around. I do like the suggestion at the end of the thread though to rewire the printer (LPT1) port to supply the 5V power supply. I'm pretty sure I can pick up a printer port plug from the electronics store, and then it would just be a matter of writing software to drive that port instead of the USB.

For that matter, since the poster said that there are multiple 5V pins on the printer port, I'm thinking just hack the printer plug into a generic USB hub to get multiple switched dumb outlets. Might be kinda nice to use that for things like charging the cell phone off the computer without tying up a real USB port.
