The new season of a certain cable-TV drama set in an ad agency in the early '60s is underway. And aside from making us crave Pall Malls and gimlets, it's making us wonder what the likes of Sterling Cooper would've done with some of the junk we sell. The dynamic illustrations, the cool layouts, the verbal wit, the casual sexism - your challenge this week:

Show us an ad for a past or current Woot product, as created by the ad men on Mad Men.

You can create your own entirely new ad or alter an existing one, but you will get points for starting from scratch.

Post your entry here by 11:59 AM (central) on Monday, August 31, 2009. Prizes are $20/$50/$100 for 3rd/2nd/1st. The rules and criteria for winning: our panel of volunteer judges can and will make stuff up as it goes along. Use Photoshop, linoleum blocks, pastels, MSPaint, cave painting, tattoos, tribal scarification, whatever, but it’ll only be judged if it’s visible in our forums as a jpg, gif, or png. As we are fond of saying, try to keep your maximum width to 550px. If you need a place to host your pictures, try www.imageshack.ws or www.photobucket.com. We have no connection to either, but they seem free and easy to use. And if you want us to be sure your entry was indeed your work, post links to your source images. The more sure we are that you did your own work, the more likely we are to consider it for a prize.

For those of us who don't watch Mad Men, is there something special about the ad style and humor? Or does this basically mean: create a 1960's styled ad for a Woot product? Maybe I just have to watch the show to get it? I'm too lazy to actually watch it and find out...

I just watched the first episode and it is more clever than funny. In the episode, the end result for advertising lucky strikes cigarettes when the government had just labeled them as dangerous, was to label the brand as "toasted" to get away from the poisonous image.

So take that I guess as you wish.

Nice job on the postcard framing (my own term for lack of a better description). Until I looked at the sources, I had just assumed it came with the lady.

Thanks. I should come clean on that....it's a frame that I downloaded for Paint Shop Pro a long time ago. I just lucked out that the style and colors matched the picture of the lady. Probably should have included it as a source.

edit: added to sources in entry post.

We understand. Many of us have been secretly slicing for years before we came out of the pantry. Nowadays though, folks like us can slice in public without fear of ridicule.

I'm completely new to these parts of the woot forums, but I thought these Photoshop/chop contests were too funny, so I decided to participate. I haven't seen Mad Men and the little bit of research I did didn't help me understand it, so if my picture just doesn't fit the theme then I understand. Thought I would give it a go anyways. I highly recommend reading through the original write up on the advertisement because my edited version correlates with it pretty well surprisingly. :D

Here are the source links:
- Original ad for Zenith Black Magic Television(Click on "large image" to see larger version.)
If the previous link isn't working (it wasn't for me again when I tried it), here is another link to the original ad.
- Woot's Sale of Aerobed Sport Bed in a Minute II

Here is my submission! (The pic is a link to a larger version for easier reading.)
