It's attitudes like this that made me buy a zune (from Woot) in the first place. The iPod isn't the best player on the market, just the best marketed... congratulations, i guess.

I have LOVED my Sansas. I think I've bought 4 of the older style that look sort of like chubby thumbdrivers. I kept two for myself and bought some for my parents. They're so easy to use-- no special software needed or anything.

They work great... love 'em!

Problem is, .mp3 is a lacking audio format (reproduction-wise) and, @ 128kbps, you lose a lot of quality. Listen to some of your ripped .mp3's and compare them to the CD quality and you'll hear a lot of things you've been missing on the .mp3 files.

Yes sir/ma'am no doubt the quality takes a major dive using .mp3! That's the cost of being able to carry hundreds of songs (thousands with some mp3 players) in your pocket as opposed to carrying around a giant book of cd's

To Summarize: The Sansa Fuze is a solid media player whose strongest attribute is very good audio playback of MP3/WMA files (no AAC aka iTunes support whatsoever), and the option afforded by the microSDHC expansion slot.

It is NOT a good video player as the screen resolution is but 220 x 176/15fps, and (essentially) ALL videos files must be converted for proper playback (software included with player).

On the plus side, the audio reproduction is very good, it drives virtually any earspeaker rather well without amplification, and the FM tuner and voice recorder are features that NO iPod offers.

At this price, it's a pretty solid deal...

i was actually sad about that, too--my little clip is blue, so it would have been fun to have a blue fuze as well. they do come in five different colors; we just get three to choose from through woot.

and while i'm on this topic, people have been noting that you can often get fuzes on ebay for this price or occasionally even less, but i would say that at least 75% of those are only in black, so if you want color, snap this bad boy up today! i'm making do with red for now... <=]

The iPhone 3GS is basically the same as an iPod Touch...but there's the little matter of about $2000 in payments (over two years) to AT&T that is kind of a downside.

I stayed up for this?!?

I love all my Sansa players. Apparently dragging them around by the headphones is NOT a good idea. Neither is washing them. Otherwise they sound great, are easy to use, and last really well.

Also, letting your spouse / parent / child borrow one is a sure way to lose it forever. That's why I only get to see most of the players I've bought from a distance

Additionally: There's also the issue of the Iphone/iPod Touch both having very low-tech/washed out LCD screens when compared to OLED/AMOLED, and the suckariffic sound quality that comes standard on every iPod.

There are official test builds for the original hardware revision Fuzes from before SanDisk went and changed the internals.

If the firmware version (Settings > System Settings > Info) starts with a "01" (eg. V01.02.26), it's a V1 Fuze.

Since these are Refurbished, there's a very good chance they're older units and therefore Rockboxable.

A word or two of caution, however

  • The Rockbox port for the Fuze hasn't been released yet and still has a number of bugs.
  • Installing Rockbox probably won't brick your Fuze, but it will very likely void the warranty
  • Installing Rockbox *will* permanently disable DRM support in the original firmware, even after uninstalling.
  • Keep your music backed up on the computer: don't leave the copy on your Rockboxed Fuze as your only copy

That said, if you don't have any PlaysForSure-crippled music or DRM'd audiobooks, I would personally say that Rockbox is well worth it (for gapless playback, Rockbox's various games and plugins (including a text file viewer that I use for plaintext ebooks), *much* better playlist capabilities, etc), but that's just my opinion.
  • My colored box^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H qube has turned dark red^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H brown. I don't really need to show off a list of everything I've wooted anymore, do I?

A major difference (for some people) between the Clip and the Fuze is that the charging/data cable is proprietary on the Fuze, whereas it's a standard mini-USB cable for the Clip.

The Fuze cable has a USB plug on one end and a strange long flat "thingy" on the other end. This means that any cables, chargers, car adapters, etc. you buy for use with this will need to be made specifically for it.

I purchased one of the Sansa Media players, the crappier smallish one E260 (one of my woots). It is supposed to play video, but even after converting it to the format it likes it still didn't play video I wanted to watch. It's collecting dust, dirt, drink spills, and whatever else goes into my jeep's cup holder. Also if I inserted a MicroSD card that I put my own MP3 files onto it wouldn't read it. Very frustrating considering the Xsfer rate of moving 2GB of music takes a while using the cable provided.

I'm not sure how this one is, but if it's just like the one I have it's only good for playing MP3s on the onboard memory, not so much on the MicroSD.

There are a few dedicated people who put linux (roxbox thingy) on these and unfortunately the version I have doesn't have linux. There went my hopes of ever using it as a true media player. I think my woot off lights are more useful.

The Fuze firmware (especially when upgraded to 0X.02.26) is far, far, better than the e200 firmware (on my old e260v1, at least... dunno about the v2), but it still falls way short of the excellence of Rockbox.

The controls on the Fuze are also much nicer than the ones on the e200. They got rid of the separate scroll ring and buttons combo by making the scroll wheel clickable, which makes for much easier button-clicking.

The Fuze has the same number of buttons but in a different configuration. Power was separated from Home/menu and placed on the opposite end of the Hold slider, which makes pretty good sense to me. There's no Record button, so that function can only be accessed via menu, but the lack of convenience is offset by the prevention of accidental recording sessions.

    You are missing
    - good 'replay-gain' volume leveling support.
    - ability to avoid the bright blue ring-light on every press
    - having a keypress do something on the first press rather than wait for the light to go on, then press again to go to next song.
    - ability to customize the display
    - ability to change channel output (from stereo to mono for when you only use one earbud)
    - ability to go into karaoke mode (subtract common sound from both left and right... usually removes vocals)
    - games (breakout, sudoku, sokoban, asteroids)

It does, but the general consensus I've seen on the ABi forums is that it's rather subpar and that Rockbox's is far superior (if you have a v1 and can will up the courage to risk installing it).

    ericslaw wrote:You are missing

As of 0X.02.26, the official SanDisk firmware for the Fuze has this.

Or to set it to a very short timeout (1 second on mine) so that you can tell whether the thing is still taking input or needs a hard reboot. Oh the joys of using prerelease software! (It used to flicker on disk access, which was actually kinda cool until they fixed that bug.)
