That's just an urban myth. Koreans believe it about as much as Americans believe in Santa Claus.

So what are you saying - that Santa's not real??

Yet another 5/5 comment.

I have a smaller version of this (might be the same one as previously wooted), and it does the same for my room as a ceiling fan. And on the lowest setting, the hum is so quiet, but perfect to fall asleep to (for fans of 'white noise' when going to bed)

Had it for 5 years now.

I purchased 2 white upright Vornado (model #?) through woot.com a year ago and LOVE it!

I say "it" and not "them" because I gave one to my girlfriend who moved here from Denver CO for me. She left 6 months later, but specifically requested I find a way to pack the Vornado in her car so she could take it with her. So when it came to love, the Vornado won.

Needless to say, I'm in for two. I want to make sure I have a nice parting gift for my next ex-girlfriend. I'm looking forward to meeting her.

I have 3 of the woot clip-ons running 24-7 since they arrived. I use them to move the AC air around (104 today here). Bought this one for the living room.

By the way, for those of you college types that went monkey-less in the most recent woof-orf, I still have one monkey to give away fo' free. Help save me from my wife, who, unbelievably, feels that my dozen or so woot monkeys do not add to our decor...

(Original Post)

"Jeebus, enough with the kvetching.

First two people to PM me with a real college address (no prisoners, please) gets a monkey, you know, for free.

Plus one of you will receive the ENTIRE contents of the Christmas 2008 Boggy Old Creature I received, took one look at, and threw in the garage, wherein it still lies. But you'll have to wait for smartpost, which means if you're due to graduate (or be expelled) soon, leave a forwarding address.

Why, you ax? Because I'm too old for this stuff, and I can't believe I just bought three more monkeys. What a dumbass I'm."

Thanks to all who responded. I now have enough addresses for the minkeys.

I'll PM a tracking number when I send them out.

My wife thanks you.

did woot.com really burn down and is now being run out of a closet in the back of a latrine on the Texas State Fairgrounds?

I suspect the woot servers will be more normal next week, they were going flakely long before the B O C timeframe, shrugs it happens.

As for Quality post usually they are given to folks that provide a post with relevant info or humor or other factors unknown to me.
I expect the colorless boxes are an effort to avoid have lots of error messages or even gateway timeout errors.

I have not had any issues with shirt.woot access, yesterday or today. While the woot-off was running I had some with woot itself, but sellout and shirt were fine, kids had nothing I wanted even to look at, and wine is always ignored here.

anyone with a grasp of common firing Rocket Number 9 sense knows that the amount of heat one tiny, sealed-off fan motor generates would not be enough to increase the temp even half a degree inside of a closet. also, evenly distributing your airflow mediates hotter pockets of air, which counts as lowering temps, not raising them. nurrrrrrrrrrr

Since we're getting pedantic, the last statement shows a misunderstanding of the Vornados' preferred use: "the Vornado air circulator...fully circulate all the air in the room..." In other words, supposedly the Vornado "air circulator" is designed to be pointed towards the ceiling or an upper corner of a room, so that the entire volume of air is moved around. A conventional "fan" is used most often to move air past a single point.

Me, I think we might as well argue how many angels can dance on pin-heads. I ordered 3 of these to replace the usual brand-X noisy and inefficient fans I have. Those will go to the local SPCA to sell in their 2nd-hand store, the Vornados will go in my offices (at work and home). I got the standing floor model 615 when it was on Woot and it's great....use that in the garage/workshop.

btw. this fan is amazing. definitely made my room significantly cooler by moving the air.

even my parents, who were skeptical at first, fell in love with it as well.

The heat wave which has encompassed Korea for about a week, has generated various heat-related accidents and deaths. At least 10 people died from the effects of electric fans which can remove oxygen from the air and lower body temperatures..."

It's funny you mention that "Fan Death" incident.

I'm Korean and my parents used to always bug me about it ALL THE TIME.

I'm fairly confident that if you maintain your air conditioners and fans, you'll be safe. I find it more believable that pathogens are getting in you (like dust) than lack of oxygen.

I've seen some pretty dirty looking fans and air conditioners in my day. I chock it up to laziness more than anything.

Does anyone who currently owns this exact model could tell me if this has the 3 prong plug or just 2 prong plug. In my work they have banned anything that does not have the 3rd grounding prong, so this is important to know if I wanted to order a few.

As such, these are not that great cooling several people sitting far apart. A normal fan's output is much wider, but also weaker. It's like comparing a laser's beam to that of a flashlight. So no, it's not just a matter of marketing labels. I've tested the claim and it's true.

buggsy2 wrote:Since we're getting pedantic, the last statement shows a misunderstanding of the Vornados' preferred use: "the Vornado air circulator...fully circulate all the air in the room..." Your entire first paragraph shows a misunderstanding of English. Re-read my statement and the post I was replying to. The original person claimed that these are just fans. My response, quoted above in its entirety, disagreed, explaining why these aren't just fans. When I wrote that these are not great for cooling people sitting apart, I never said that it was the Vornado's intended purpose. I merely stated that it was a difference between the Vornado and ordinary fans.

In other words, your claim that I misunderstood the Vornado's purpose is entirely in your mind. In fact, if you'd read my many other posts, you'd see that I talk about air circulation, including aiming it toward the ceiling or corner. I even explicitly said that it wasn't meant to blow directly at a person. And I said how this can circulate soot and noxious gases. In fact, one of my first posts talked about corresponding with a Vornado engineer. So yes, I understand how a Vornado is used.

In fact, if you'd re-read my second-to-last sentence, you'd see that I acknowledge that these air circulators serve a different purpose. I said that "air circulator" isn't just a marketing label, but a real functional difference between Vornado and ordinary fans.

Exactly. Most of my patients used to be from lower income neightborhoods (Harlem and Alphabet City) where mold, cockroach and rat/mice droppings are major problems. That's why asthma attacks are much more common in those neighborhoods. Those allergens/irritants generally fall to the ground or get stuck in furniture. When you aerosolize them by circulating the air, you can cause attacks, including during sleep.
