Ugh, just received my machine. Troubleshot it, still doesn't pump water, and clearly already used and repackaged. There's dried water on the machine and a chunk of rubber has been ripped out from the handle on the steamer.

Definitely disappointed by this.

Wow, I'm sad that so many of you have issues with your units. Mine was brand new and is working incredibly well. Have probably pulled 30 shots through it so far, and have been sufficiently wired for the last week.

One question for coffee geeks- how much coffee do you use for the double shot? Do you make it so that the basket is full once it is tamped, or do you fill it up with the ground coffee and then tamp it (this makes it only 1/2 to 2/3 full)?

Use 2 level measures & then tamp. It shouldn't be completely full.

Once I got Breville on the phone, they were extremely courteous and said that they would email me a return label; but, I too am very disappointed that Woot would pawn this scaffolding lot off on us.

I just setup mine and I have the same issue. It won't pump. Mine looks new though. I'm gonna call Breville Monday 1-866-273-8455

Also very dissapointed.

Would a woot staff member like to respond? An apology (at the very least) would be appropriate.

That said, my machine was new... but was also DOA as others have described. Makes noise when knob is turned to the "Espresso" selection, but no water pumps. Looks like a call to Breville is in order.

What a bummer! Me too, heat, lights & noise, but no action.

But what happens when service@woot.com doesn't answer? ;-) :-P

How's life Pappy?

Called Breville yesterday, left a call-back #, got a response 2 hours later. They suggested I try switching back and forth between "Espresso" and "Steam" quickly as it might have an air bubble blocking flow and that might clear it.

Tried when I got home... but unfortunately this did not work...all steam mode does is produce a clicking noise and not even a drop of water or heat from the steam wand.

Being at work, didn't want to roll the dice on the hold/call-back today, so emailed them this morning. Haven't heard back yet... but hopefully they'll be able to replace it.

Update: Received an email reply from Breville today (10/28) with return instructions. Hopefully will have the broken machine back to them and a return will be on it's way soon.

I have been promised a refurbished replacement, but still no shipping label from FedEx as promised 5 days ago.
Last Breville product I'll ever fall for, last Woot too. Good luck everyone.

Received the replacement unit today. Again it is a refurb unit and looking more worn than the first one (it was obvious by just looking at the box that I was going to be disappointed). Was meant to be a gift but there is no way I could give this to someone. I'm going to request a refund - Don't want to go through the process again, as I have no confidence in Woot sending me a new unit. Has definitely dented my perception of woot.

Just had a dangerous situation with my unit. Has been working fine, then this afternoon, it started pumping water for no reason. The unit was off and the dial was in the stand-by position, but cold water was pumping through. The collection plate quickly filled and spilled water all over the kitchen. I unplugged to get it to stop, but if I plug it back in, the pump starts again. I left a call back number to Breville customer service and submitted an online notice.
Very unhappy as this could have been a serious safety issue had I not been home.

Got my brand new Breville today, just 10 days after sending the last one (would not pump water) back via FedEx. It looks and performs as it should! I am very pleased - thanks Woot. Thanks for the exemplary customer service, Breville.

Got my replacement today! Works perfectly!

I have just opened mine - it was a present from my wife.
Unfortunately it's also used! I can't believe it, I am very dissapointed with WOOT.
How do I get it replaced or refunded?

Mine just started doing this too. Is there a fix or just replace? It only does it at random though. So if I'm quick about I can pull a few shots and keep it unplugged when not in use.

Mine worked for two weeks, than began to smoke.

Breville was nice and said they will be sending me a new unit. But this was a gift for my wife, so not exactly ideal.

From the comments, it looks like this is a common situation. I'll think twice before buying an electronic item from woot.

Following up from my non-pumping machine issue: I received my replacement machine from Breville yesterday. I'm happy to report it was in pristine condition and brewed a great tasting shot of espresso from a Starbucks pod.

Still unnerved by the others reporting smoking/flooding issues... I'll definately keep an eye on it. This is the first Breville appliance I've owned. I've always been impressed by the sturdy physical construction of their stuff in the store... but all that is for naught if the functionality doesn't last.

Since my Krupps burr grinder could be a bit better, I'd consider upgrading it to a Breville Ikon grinder down the road... but that will definitely hinge on how well this machine holds up.

Definitely return it. You just need a screenshot of your Woot receipt, the model number, and the serial number (3 digit on the bottom). Send it to the Breville customer service e-mail address. They will send you a link to FedEx, print the label, ship it back for free, and your new unit will be about a week.

I got my new one today. It is slightly different, a BES820XL. I will be keeping it unplugged when not in use. I was not happy to have the problem, but customer service did replace it. And I have espresso again.

This is exactly the problem that I have experienced with mine. I just got off the phone with Breville. I have faxed my receipt to them, and they should be sending me a FedEx label soon. It's a bit of a hassle for me to send the old one back. I bought this for my girlfriend as a xmas gift - very disappointing.
Well, here's hoping that Breville can rectify this situation.
I had been thinking about buying another Breville product - a small convection oven - but we'll wait to see how they do with this return first.

Just a follow up note . . .

We have had this maching since October of 2009 and it is still running strong. It was a little disappointing that our first purchase from Woot was a dud, but Breville replaced it with the model up and with no questions asked. We really enjoy it.

Mine is still running strong. The initial one was a dud but Breville replaced it w/in a week or so of getting it.
