copperhead wrote:While the 650 may be better, the question in my mind is whether the 600 is just not as good or awful? I don't know what "much better" means. I have an eye on the PCIE because if I understand correctly, I could actually record HD shows with it. Is that correct?

From what I'm understanding, they both should be able to do this. The "much better" on the 650 probably comes from the:
# Motion Adaptive 3D Comb Filter
# Noise Reduction
# Edge Enhancement
The 600 doesn't have.

The trade-off being the reduced speed (a regular PCI slot) of the 650 and the Clear-QAM (unscrambled) Digital HD Cable
on the 650 vs. increased speed (PCIe) and straight up Clear-QAM on the 600.

The "free" HD (the broadcast stuff FCC makes cable companies do) will be unscrambled and copperhead says the 650 gives him a better picture.

But if you are paying for cable you will need Clear-QAM so you will have to get a 600-maybe. PCIe will make it faster anyway.

Some posters have pointed to evidence the 650 may be able work with scrambled cable too (like dkouts just recently) despite the (unscrambled) thing on woots front page. If that's true you don't need the 600 unless you are limited by your PCI vs. PCIe slots.

Hopefully someone else can confirm or correct this if I'm steering you wrong.

Anyone know if you can place a second order after having placed an earlier order? I'de like to get at least one PCI card now and decided later about the PCIE?

The checkout showed me the same thing, naturally I picked the PCIe version. Now my receipt says 600PCIe... Not the card I wanted...

Looks like Woot fixed the main page. The model numbers are now 600 and 650.

The buy page has also been fixed!

I spent almost $60 shipped on a new retail package of the Visiontek PCI-e x1 650 version, but it's long enough that it crosses over the RAM slots in my HTPC, so I can't use it. Still debating over RMA'ing it back to ConsumerDepot, I'll probably just eat the cost tho and hold onto it for now.

Look more carefully and you'll see that's the 600 USB they are talking about.

Not without "cheating" a bit. Standard Woot protocol - Only one order for any item per account. You can supposedly create a second account using a different name or whatever (haven't done it myself) and place a second order that way.

Also, just to make sure you're aware, Woot will replace these cards with something else tonight at Midnight CST, so when you say "decide later", you can't come back tomorrow and order one of these. They won't be here anymore. If they don't sell out (and maybe even if they do), they'll show up again here, or on sellout.woot, eventually, but there's no telling when.

Looking for some clarification about clear QAM and recording capability.

Does clear QAM mean that you can receive digital HD signal through coax? This isn't over the air is it? Can anyone clarify whether I would be able to get all my HD channels on the 650 PCI through the clear QAM support?

Also, these can be recorded as well right? I'de like to be able to convert HD shows into mpeg.

Diamond, the actual makers of this product, are awful. I bought the USB 650 tuner that was here a while ago, and I have had a ticket in with Diamond tech support for 3+ weeks and it has not even been viewed. I would stay away from this product. Also my USB one makes a high pitch squealing noise while viewing tv with windows 7, just so everyone knows.

Clear QAM is the format used to send digital through the coax; as opposed to Over-The-Air (OTA) using an antenna. As to what quality digital (SD or HD) and how many channels you get is up to what your cable provider is sending down the pipe in Clear QAM.

I believe that the providers are required to supply primary local broadcast channels only in Clear QAM. However, many supply at least the standard channels that you would receive with analog cable (usually around 80).

From personal experience, when I plugged in an AverMedia USB tuner into the cable in Orlando, I received all of the 80 or so standard cable channels and about 15 additional ones. I think all the additional ones were the sub-channels that could be picked up OTA with an antenna.

It appears that Woot messed this one royally. The description for the 650PCI is that for the 650PCIE (http://www.diamondmm.com/TVW650PCIE.php and http://www.diamondmm.com/TVW650PCI.php). In other words the card spec do not match the card itself. Diamond clearly states there is no Clear-QAM (unscrambled) Digital HD Cable support for the 650PCI. Woot needs to clean up the whole listing. The problems are not limited to 600PCIE or 650 PCIe but also to the description of 650PCI and misrepresenting its capabilities.
Wake up guys, whomever did this listing should have their a-- fired.

1. this product, a computer, and an hd antenna will allow me to watch broadcast over the air hd programs on the pc?
- or -
2. this product, a computer, an hdtv, and a good hd antenna will allow me to watch broadcast over the air hd programs on the tv and/or the pc, and potentially use the computer as a dvr?

The answer is .... 2.

If your needs are as simple as you list, then either card will do the job as listed in #2.

edit
Oops, if you want to watch the programs from the tuner on your hdtv, then your video card will have to be connected to your TV.

I think I found the answer to my own question. Other websites, a few others in this thread, and a Newegg review of the product all say that the card is low-profile, but a low-profile bracket is not included or available as a separate purchase. *shakes head*

So the PCI-E card doesn't have hardware MPEG-2 encoding? That probably is going to kill the deal for me.

I had bought a TV Wonder a few years ago for the same reason. I wanted to convert old home videos to DVD. However, you have to essentially record the video from tape to digital in real time and the files became too cumbersome for my PC to handle. (I don't believe these will do burn-to-DVD on the fly)

Long story short, it became easier to just take the video tapes to a photo shop and pay the $100 to have them convert them all.

Just ordered the PCIe version. I have the PCI version of this and it works great with WMC. Just wanted to step up the the PCIe version and its QAM feature. No need to subscribe to Tivo. Your PC is your DVR. Just record your favorite programs to your PC and watch whenever you'd like. I've got a WHS so I store all recorded shows on that and can watch programs from any computer at home. Can watch when traveling like SLING BOX, but why watch TV when your traveling. You can come home and catch up on your shows later.
