No, it'll make a crummy DVR. You're better off just LANing AOEII on that thing.[/quote]
But I would think since the 650 PCI card has a dedicated hard decoder, the system requirements (what ARE the processing requirements?) would be much lower. (The Piii has 1.5 GB of RAM and a terrabyte drive, so RAM and HDD are no issue)

THESE ARE NOT MADE BY ATI THEY ARE MADE BY DIAMOMD UNDER LICENCE FROM ATI

SOME HAVE LINKED THE ATI PAGE AS THE MANUFACTURER !

ATI DOES MAKE THEIR OWN VERSIONS THIS IS NOT THOSE !
THESE ARE MADE BY DIAMOND !
AND ARE A GREAT MAKER AND VALUE !
THEY MAY HAVE SLIGHTLY DIFFRENT STATS !

HERE IS THE LINK TO DIAMONDS PAGE...

http://www.diamondmm.com/TVW650PCIE.php

I doubt it is that model, unless Woot has completely failed it both it's specs and pictures of the items and boxes.

But if it is the Diamond model, it comes with better specs and a remote...so no problems with that. Diamond's model is 130 dollars retail on their site.

In for 1 PCI version....HW decoding is a no brainer.

The 650PCI does NOT have clearQAM support! You must buy the 650PCI-express if you want clearQAM.

The lack of clearQAM on the PCI is well documented on many reputable sites. Ex: the first google hit for "ati tv wonder 650 qam" returns http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=950104

And if you look at ATI's own product description:
http://ati.amd.com/products/tvwonder650/index.html.
You'll notice: "ClearQAM cable TV^2" referencing the fine print:
2: ClearQAM digital TV... ...Supported on ATI TV Wonder 650 Combo PCI Express

Not sure that's correct. ATi's site says it IS supported on the 650 PCI. Check the product matrix.

Do you have to download the PVR software or is it included?

Look at the pictures, it's definitely the Diamond version of the card. I don't see too many differences from the ATI versions.

Here's the site for the 650PCI
linkapotamus

Also on that site QAM isn't listed as a feature for the 650PCI, and is for the 600PCIe

And one last thing, it also lists the 650PCI as dual tuner and the 600PCIe as single tuner. Myth confirmed!

Both come with a remote, and the PCI version comes with the breakout box for the AV inputs (S-Vid, Composite vid, stereo audio)

(EDIT!!!! It doesn't look like the Woot version comes with a remote, since it isn't listed on the box...)

I have a ton of experience with TV tuners and this is a really sweet deal... go for the 650PCI NOW if you are on the fence, you won't regret it, especially if you've already got a version of Windows that has Media Center.

Oh wow: the PCI version is a dual tuner one (separate analog and digital TV tuners).

This means that you can record digital TV while watching something else on analog TV and vice versa. So, if you have analog cable TV (I honestly don't know if they still have analog cable TV in the US), it's pretty awesome. I'm not familiar with ATI's software, but dual tuners also means that it's possible to do picture in picture simultaneous viewing of analog and digital TV.

On the PCIe version, it uses a single silicon tuner for both analog and digital, so you can only toggle between them (watch/record one channel at a time).

Right now it's a software/driver issue...

It is supported under Windows Vista

There is no driver yet for Win 7, but logic follows that if it works under vista it should work under 7 seeing as how they tend to share driver functionality.

Does anyone know how we'll be installing drivers/software?

And does anyone have any recommendations for other software other than the one provided?

The link eddie posted that I replied to was the for the PCIe version. The diamond version he linked to has dual tuners, the PCIe version on the woot site does not.

I will agree that the PCI card looks like the same one, but the difference in packaging and lack of remote leads me to think it is NOT the diamond version of the PCI either.

but when you click on the button the next page on the order pick they are both listed as HD 650's
only one is PCIe and the other as PCI

AND YES WOOT HAS SCREWD UP MANY TIMES !!!
THET DON'T EVEN LIST THESE AS A DIAMOND PRODUCT !
AS YOU CAN SEE THEY ARE LISTED AS ATI

i'm goin on a hunch here, but in order for this to work with comcast, will i need to run the cable from the wall to the comcast cable box then to this tuner? i ask this because my only cable box is downstairs and my comp is upstairs (no i will not get a 100foot cable lol).. however, if i don't need the cable box, then i'll be in for one =) thanks in advance

Actually if you look at the image of the box on the front page, it does indicate Diamond on the box. It just doesn't have the large red color column. The box is all black with Diamond in white letters.

confirm. The ATSC stream is digital and is captured bit-for-bit digital. No encoding necessary for ATSC. NTSC is analog and gets a boost from hardware-encoding.

Sounds like come clarification is necessary in the description. Thanks for that! I'm using Vista Ultimate 64-bit, so I'm happy. My friend, who's getting the second for Christmas has XP 64-bit, so he may not be as excited. But I'm sure he'll still be happy with it.

Interesting I didn't notice the differences in the packaging, but the Woot pictures definitely say Diamond even if the boxes aren't exactly the same. Maybe this is a version that doesn't come with the remote since the remote isn't in the woot pics.

It's called the internets... You will find drivers on the ATi web page (or the Diamond site, if that's really who made these). There should also be instruction manuals and such for download. Seeing as you were able to post on the internets, you should be able to download these items without any problems.

I'm in for one of each. However, if the ATI software fir these is as bad as what came with the ATI HDTV USB tuner that woot.com sold a few weeks ago, this could be less the than wonderful. What does everyone recommend for a better alternative to the ATi TV software?

If your area has "digital cable" from comcast there is a good chance that there's clear QAM versions of the locals and perhaps even the expanded basics. Some areas (portland, seattle, etc) have had DTA box rollouts on comcast that have further encrypted those QAM signals but, frequently, local stations are passed in clear QAM rather than encrypted. You can get an idea of what's available with a clear QAM capable HDTV and the following channel map for your zip code. http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/channels

That seals it for me. I have a MythTV box with an Hauppauge card. Would have been nice to replace that with an HDTV card, but not with this one.

Windows Media Center. I've tried them all and WMC is really great. Since the PCI version has a hardware MPEG encoder is *should* work, but the PCIe probably won't. I'm not 100% positive though, but I have an older HDTV wonder card and it doesn't work in MCE because it doesn't have the MPEG encoder. I also have a Hauppage card with nearly identical specs to this card and it works fine.
