Hi.
I am almost ready to pull the trigger on what would be my first woot.

But I just bought a Sansa Clip 8GB (not Clip+) at Wal-Mart for $49.00 plus tax... I like the idea of video just because it would be easier to surf tracks than on the Clip... I had a Clip 1GB previously and loved it..

Any advice?

You can always use something like Mencoder (Linux) or Foobar2000 (Windows) to trancsode them to other formats.

These things are absolutely fantastic. I have a first gen iPod Touch. My aunt was looking for a cheap MP3 player and I told her to get this because it was cheap and looked nice. And I set it up for her, and now I'm jealous. It doesn't help much that iPods are utter **** and their syncing software train-wreck that is iTunes needs a serious overhaul.

But these things are amazing. Drag-and-drop support! Anything that I can make a playlist for in oddgravity's Playlist Creator and simply drop on the device is fantastic in my book. Who needs that messy software? And an FM radio and MicroSD card? This thing is doing a lot that players 2-3x its price can't do.

I seriously suggest everyone here picks up at least one!

I think Sansas are the bomb. We've had about ten, and the kids still love getting and using them. Sometimes the refirbs don't last too long, but the disposable nature of these things is totally cool. $22!

I wish I would have waited for this one instead of buying the 8GB Sansa Clip that was available about a week ago. This and an 8GB card would be about the same price as the Sansa Clip was!

I've got the 4GB.
I bought it for its wheelie-thingy.
As opposed to iPods where you have to just hope your scrolling and clicking are taking effect.

But seriously. It's a pretty sweet gadget.

Nah. From what I understand, iTunes is apple only.
Correct?

I have had a 4gb and an 8gb. I love the ease of loading it. I recently went to an Ipod Touch from a previous woot just because of the size of the storage. If the fuze came in 32gb I would never have bought another brand. I did try the sansa view and I still think the fuze is the best way to go. The support from Sandisk is great. I think I am in for one for a friend! She might like it!

You are being facetious? How can it accept only 4GB expansion cards if yours accepts a 16GB card? I have a 2GB Fuze. Is there a limit on this one?

Well, I haven't received the one I just purchased the other day, but I expect it's like the other MP3 players I've had -- plug it into the USB slot on your computer using a Micro-USB cable and it'll charge up that way. Or buy an AC to USB adapter and plug it up that way. I've never had to buy any sort of cables as I've always had several around that would work.

aaltieri wrote:Rockbox is bloody awsome! I got the 4gb Fuze for my daughter for Christmas from the last woot-off. After playing with it for a bit, I didn't want to give it to her!

In order to RockBox this puppy, go visit:

http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SansaFuze

This will tell you what you need and link to the install instructions. You are taking a chance ordering this though. You can only RockBox the FIRST version of the Fuze. Once you rockbox it, it will play regular mpeg movies with no problem. Just whip out some good, old fashioned mencoder (free video encoder, do a google search for your OS) a la:

mencoder input.avi -o output.mpg -of mpeg -mpegopts format=mpeg1:tsaf:muxrate=2000\
-oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=mp2:abitrate=224\
-ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video:vbitrate=1152:keyint=15:mbd=2\
-vf scale=220:165\
-ofps 24000/1001

And after a few minutes you can watch movies. The screen is amazing for something so small. The battery life watching movies isn't that great. About 4-6 hours depending on what you are watching. Music, I can't tell you. We haven't drained the battery listening to music yet. But it's pretty impressive.

I'm in for one...I might bight on two. Honestly, once you rockbox this, for $30 you are getting something that beats a $100 iPod Nano hands down. You can watch movies, play games, listen to the radio. And it plays flac, Ogg Vorbis, and it looks like it will even play real audio now.

This is a no-brainer. It's cheap enough to lose. It does more than an iPod.

Just get it. If you have any questions on encoding movies or audio for this, let me know and I'll help as best as I can.

--mop

This is going to be the first thing I do with it. Despite being a 50-50 shot on whether it's f1 or f2, there is a beta for f2 out there that I'll try anyway. Long Live Rockbox!

Incorrect. iTunes also has a Windoze port. However, try out SongBird. It's astronomically better. Also, I very much doubt that the Fuze integrates with iTunes. Apple does a lot of stuff to keep their customers locked into Apple products

Umm... I could be misunderstanding the OP, but my thought is that he meant that iTunes songs will only play on Apple hardware. You are correct that there is iTunes *software* for Windows as well, so one could, in theory burn to CD or otherwise convert the format from the proprietary to the generic.

Who do I contact about this and can I get my money back or have it resent?

Also, WHY do they put the contents of the box on a label on the outside of the box...duhh?

Here is my review. I have owned the E300 series and this Fuze. Fuze is much better because:
- The device processor is faster that the E300, the fuze loads up in 1 second and is able to play long videos without becoming out of sync with audio vs video
- The FM radio on the Fuze is 20X more powerful than the E300. The stations come in better
- The expandable memory is not limited to the amount of memory the player has. Therefore if you have a 2GB Fuze you can use a 8GB Micro SD Card. Supports misco HDSC also.
- Roxbox works just fine on my fuze. The rockbox webpage says that the fuze (v1) is unstable, but it works just fine on mine. I recommend that automatic installer, since I could not get rockbox to load manually. The fuze I got from woot was v1, which is good because v2 does not work with rockbox according to their website.
- Videos are more clear on the Fuze and you don't have to rotate the player to watch videos like you do with the E300.
- One wierd thing is that the audio jack is on the bottom, but I am used to it now.
- I highly recommend the Fuze. Apple IPOD is the more expensive version of the fuze.
- Please reply and let me know if my post was helpful. Thank you for reading.

Limit is the price of the card. I can fit a 8GB and from above, they can fit a 16gb. No one has $150 to by a 32 gb yet.

Is one better or less expensive than the other ?

How long did you need to charge it ?
How can you tell which version player it is ?

Thanks

I got the Sansa today... charged it up... loaded some audio-books and got ready to relax.

I've bought a number of items from woot over the years... some new, some refurbs.

It seems my luck has run out.

About 30 minutes into the book... "click"

It went completely dead.
The screen went blank.
The audio stopped.
Nothing!
The thing just shut down.

I've tried turning it back on and plugging it back in to the USB... nothing.

It is dead.

Yes, I know... send a note to service@woot.com.

I have. Actually, this is more or less a copy of the note I sent to them. I'm just posting here so fellow wooters will know to try theirs out first if it is a gift just to be sure it is not a dud, too.

Woot staff - please advise.

Side note - I bought a Sansa Clip a long time ago from woot and it has been flawless. And yes, it too was a refurb. So it's not like I did not have high expectations built on reliable foundations.

I have to agree with you. I buy Sansas as gifts . I pulled a few out for Christmas. Two clips & a larger 8 gb Sansa were dead. Glad I checking them before sending , but upset that I waited too long.

I have bought many Sansas on Woot, all refurbs. These are the only ones I have had problem with.

I just got my woot 2gig Fuze and if I play the volume over about 1/2 of max my Fuze just starts clicking is this normal (some sort of built in max level limit to protect my ears ) or is my Fuze defective? (it does this on mp3's,video's and radio)

Thanks

I just got mine yesterday and figured out today how to tell which version it is. The one I got is a v1 Fuse. :-) The way to tell is to go into the system menu and then select "info" and look at the firmware version. If the firmware begins with 01, you have a version 1 Fuze. If your firmware version begins with 02, you have a version 2 Fuze.

Mine is getting RMA'd tomorrow the volume only works up to 50% on video, music and radio higher than that and all it does is click click click.

I just replaced it with 2 of the 4 gigs I hope I have better luck with them spending at least 10 buck for shipping both ways for nothing leaps into the vacuum!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention waiting 7-10 days after Woot receives the defective item to refund my money.

Woot a coupon for future shipping would be nice...hint hint

So far, mine is working fine, and it's V1, so you know I'm rockboxing this puppy. However, the clicking IS something a known issue.

Try removing the headphone jack and reinserting it pretty forcefully. It may not be making full contact. On the hand...this bloke seem to have the exact OPPOSITE problem:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R2LL96NWPC3RS

He has to pull his jack out just a little to make contact.

You may want to try both before returning. Also, take the headphone that came with the player. inspect them very carefully. Then put them into the nearest garbage receptacle. They are absolute scaffolding and could also be part of the problem.

Just a thought. RMA's are always annoying and painful.

IMO the Fuze is better than the ipod Nano. compatible with multiple OS and music software. listen and rec fm radio. the menu is easy to use. you can just drag and drop files. it plays a variety of different formats. and most of all...it is WAY cheaper than anything ipod. if woot offers it again, i will definitely buy a second one.

Got mine the other day. I'm really impressed with the look and feel of it for the price. I Rockboxed it this evening, dual boot with the original firmware. Best of both worlds. Rockbox boots normally, but hold down the left button while booting, and the Sansa firmware boots instead. With Rockbox, it plays mpeg videos absolutely stunningly. I'm using a free program called WinFF to convert downloaded .avi TV shows and movies to .mpg format. The conversion only takes a minute or two for a full-length film, unlike some conversion programs/formats I've used which take hours. Each movie is around 300 megs after conversion, so I can fit about 26 of them on an 8GB memory card. That's about 40 hours of video entertainment to keep my 6-year-old happy on long air/car trips, and I still have 2GB in the player itself for a bunch of tunes! Best $20 I ever spent. My only regret is that I only bought one, and not three.

Couldn't have said it better!

The other thing I like about the Sansa stuff, I don't have to install a massive piece of software to run my clips and fuzes. Try that if you have a Wintel based PC. Big deal, I had to install Windows Media Player. Now, had I had an iWhatever, Apple would want me to install massive amounts of stuff, as well as converting my files over to something proprietary.

Besides that, I've got 3 or 4 Clips, and 2 of these Fuzes. Combined price would be less than a weak iCrap. (iScaffolding?)

"Issue!"

I got 2 of these in this Woot. Note, I've gotten a BUNCH of Sansa stuff in the past, with NO problems at all. One of these, the scroll wheel won't do anything. It's supposed to adjust volume, among other things. It doesn't.

I know it isn't me, because like I posted up there, I got 2 of them. Second one works just fine.

I've e-mailed RMA at woot, we'll see what happens.
