With a choice of XP or 7 there's really no wrong choice!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this netbook rocks! The keyboard is stellar and everything else works great.

You will most likely want Windows XP. If Windows 7 Starter is on the netbook, you will have a lot of annoyances, including not being able to change the background.

These are indeed really great netbooks and the accessory kit does like nice! Good deal I think.

That accessory kit makes this a good deal.
Usually they sell for $70 or so alone.

This may be a dumb question, but how reliable do these refurbished items usually end up being?

I know this is only a 3-cell battery, but only 2 hours of life, "depending on usage" (which makes me think even less)? Does anyone have real-world experience of battery life to expect?

I run Windows 7 Pro on all my machines that aren't Linux and I love it. However, I also work in Electronics Retail (Sadly..temp job while in $chool) and we sell all our netbooks with XP or Windows 7 Starter. Windows 7 Starter has a lot of features disabled, and is not easy to network locally with. I've seen many customer try to return netbooks simply because they can't change the background, it's locked by Micro$oft. 7 Starter is designed for emerging markets. Do a little Googling you'll find complaints/etc.

I'm running 7 Pro and it works great. The battery blows though. 2 hours is stretching it.
Just ordered a 9 cell that should last decent.

maybe we need clarification of which windows 7 comes with before any more comments. if it comes with 7 starter, then yes you will have issues. it if comes with anything else, it should run fine. although 1 gig ram might elude to it being just 7 starter, which is a bummer.

This too concerns me. I am looking to pull th trigger on a new netbook but portable is the key. Two hours of battery life won't last as long as a caffeine hit in a day long meeting.

Can anyone tell if this has Windows 7 Starter or Premium? As far as I can tell, it makes a big difference. I also wonder about the refurbished items....are they as good as new?

Whatever version you get, you'll probably want a fresh OS install. Acer comes a little loaded with bloat. And I think that there even people running OS X on this.

Actually, there is a very basic version of windows 7 that does not have many of the normal "tweaks" of the normal versions.

Here is a link to a page that describes what win 7 started doesn't include: http://windows.about.com/od/windowsosversions/a/Win7Starter.htm

I looked at some of the configurations at DCno10's Acer link, and they said Windows Starter.

Should work perfectly fine. Atoms are based on Intelx86. Just make sure you have a means of installing it whether Via network, flash drive, or external cd/dvd drive.
