Um... As a general rule, brake lights don't go on your roof, in your grille, or otherwise make people say "Oh gristle, it's a cop." The relevant law here is Nevada is NRS 484A.480, subsections 5-7:

5. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 4, a person shall not operate a motor vehicle with any system or device that causes the headlamps of the vehicle to continue to flash alternately or simultaneously while the system or device is activated. This subsection does not prohibit the operation of a motorcycle equipped with any system or device that modulates the intensity of light produced by the headlamp of the motorcycle, if the system or device is used only during daylight hours and conforms to the requirements of 49 C.F.R. § 571.108.

6. A person shall not operate a vehicle with any lamp or device displaying a red light visible from directly in front of the center of the vehicle except an authorized emergency vehicle, a school bus or an official vehicle of a regulatory agency.

7. A person shall not operate a vehicle with any lamp or device displaying a blue light, except a motorcycle pursuant to NRS 486.261 or an authorized emergency vehicle.

    From the Woot FAQ:

Why isn't my state/country/province listed; do you ship internationally?
No, we do not ship outside of the continental United States at this time. We do not ship to Canada, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, nor to Maggie's Nipples, Wyoming or Assinippi, Massachusetts at this time.

If the sale is listed under your account, I would send an email to Woot, but I bet they cancel it anyhow (what else can they do?).

srees wrote:Hey now, no need for sarcasm.
You are mostly correct. 500mA at 5V should be sufficient for most things that run off USB. The data spec calls for that as a maximum. Really, I don't see these lights pulling half an amp. They are just really...wimpy. I suppose it's possible, but more likely he had defective lights.

However, USB ports on a computer are capable of providing significantly more amperage. The USB battery charging specification provides for up to 1.5 amps, which most USB 2.0 connectors are rated at. And heck, if you have a powered USB port (my laptop does) it can deliver up to 6A of current!

So, no -- those dinky car adapters are not the same. They are mostly a gimmick, and convenient for piddly stuff like charging a bluetooth headset while you are on the road.

And you too are mostly correct. You got the specs for USB pretty well, but to say that the car adapter could not possibly output what USB can is ludicrous! Most vehicles have a 10A fuse on the cigarette lighter/power outlet. You could comfortably draw 8A without blowing the fuse. A stock 5 volt linear voltage regulator, like the LM7805, can accept up to 35V as input and provide regulated 5V at 1 amp. Well within the USB battery charge spec and even higher than device draw spec. With a special circuit arrangement called a "crowbar" or "current bucking" arrangement you could get about 3A safely out of that LM7805 1Amp regulator (still at 5 volts regulated). Put a good heatsink on that regulator and you could probably get 5A out without risk. The total part count is about 3 parts stock arrangement (2 capacitors, 1 regulator), 8 parts for the crowbar arrangement (3 cap, 1 reg, 1 power transistor, 2 power resistors, 1 high current silicon diode). No gimmicks here, just electronics know how.

I'm not Mr. Wizard, but I know how to engineer electronics.

Most likely, if you did not change the address, it did not go through. Check "My account" on the top of the page. It will tell you which woots you have bought by their reckoning.

Woot only ships within the US. Shirt.woot will ship to other countries. Wine.woot only ships to those states in the US that will allow wine to be sold on the internet.
