We left the posts from our chain link fence standing and the trees are falling between the posts. I should be taking pictures. Hubby and I have tree-hugger tendencies so we are sad but we have owned private planes for years so we understand the necessity.

I agree. We had an 80' pine felled in our yard in WA. They landed it right down the single-wide angled driveway and missed the electrical lines by topping it just enough.

I think she sold the land to the airport because they needed to clear the trees.

Or maybe it is some land they use to own.
Either way, the airport is clearing it because it interferes with the runway.

I do (My road is right under final approach, and my house is about 2000 feet or so from the end of the runway). It's not that bad (granted, this is a small airport). The worst that happens is the Medivac that takes off at 3am on a summer morning (when the windows are open). Other than that, it's not bad at all (barely notice anymore).

It's happened twice in the past 60 years or so. One the pilot managed to turn it into a bunch of trees away from the road (worse for him, better for all the residents). The other time the pilot landed on the road (and took out a few power lines in the process). No major damage to property in either case. But don't get me wrong, every time I see one come in low or slow, I think about that what if...

You are right! The trees were right in the glide path for final approach. When we moved here, the trees were smaller and the runway was farther away. They extended the runway a couple of years ago and couldn't get IFR certified for the extension due to our trees. We sold them the land. They say we can move the house if we want to. They have finally gotten around to cutting the trees. It is a very sleepy little airport without much traffic. That will change if they can get a commuter airline in here. The local Indian tribe is rumored to have plans to build another casino within several miles of the airport. Interesting times in my sleepy little valley two hours from anywhere.

Small plane was on approach at the other end of the runway about midnight Easter weekend about 5 years ago. Missed his approach and clipped a power line. Killed the pilot and a passenger. One fellow survived with bad burns. It is hard to land on our end of the runway at night due to the mountains in the way. Every once in a while a C131 will land. It shakes the house. We had leased a Cessna 210 to a local physician about 20 years ago. We thought we had completed the lease and had canceled the hull insurance. We asked him to leave the key with FBO. He used the plane again without our knowledge, taking off early one morning in the fog. He stalled the 210 a couple of hundred feet in the air and crashed with full tanks of fuel. Killed all four people on board. The physician's brother in law was probably flying right seat. He was an airline pilot. NTSB ruled pilot error. Engine started right up on the bench when they replaced the magneto that was damaged in the crash. At least I think it was the magneto. Terrible awful crash. It was at the other end of the runway from us. We didn't hear it.

We've had about 1 crash every 2 or 3 years, but most are on the property. There have been only 2 fatal crashes in the past 20 years though. The first was an Aerostar (a very fast twin engine piston) which lost one engine and the pilot put it into the trees at around 150mph (no survivors). The second was a glider crash. I was the first on scene at that one (I was working at the airport at the time). The pilot was an elderly man with nearly 100,000 flight time. He had a stroke in mid flight, and was unable to operate the spoilers (speed brakes that are necessary to slow down a high performance aircraft). He overshot the runway, and went into the trees at about 80mph and 30 feet off the ground. When we got there, the roosterpit was the only thing intact. After such a violent crash, his only injury? A small cut on the back of his head from the The Strangers (2008)red canopy. He died from the stroke later that night, but the NTSB classified it as a fatality.

There was another almost fatality where a piper Cherokee's engine stalled just after takeoff. She tried to turn around, and hit the edge of a tree (5 feet higher and she would have made it) and went straight into the ground. I was one of the first on the scene (I was an EMT by this point). The passenger had a 3 inch piece of her skull missing from the control column (the yoke broke off, and the steel rod punched a hole). We treated both and flew them to the local trauma center. Both survived with little to no aftereffects (Absolutely amazing). The cause? Water in the fuel tanks combined with pilot error (there was a field in front of her that she could have made, but she chose to turn around)...

Luckally, the largest thing we have at our airport is a King-Air 200 and a Pilatus. The runway is only 2733 feet, so not much bigger would be able to land there (except for the occasional F-4 Corsair or P-40)...

I grew up a few miles from JFK. We had the approach to the runway for years. Planes were low and LOUD.
Then they gave us the helicopter to the Pan Am building route.
Much better than the jets!

Once I was getting on the highway that runs just north of JFK.
A plane was landing and it was way too low.
I stopped, but I wasn't on the parkway yet.

Every car on the highway stopped! It was weird. I doubt that the plane would have had enough space to land on the highway. I think they need more than a mile to land.

There was a spot on Rockaway Blvd that you could park the car and the planes would pass over head at maybe 50 feet. That was fun!
They closed it off. Eventually a plane did land short and went over the road on ground level.
