GodaiNoBaka wrote:1) "blackface" as it was used in minstrel shows consisted of the entire face being made up in pan black EXCEPT for the mouth, which was either left with a white circle or was painted with red to exaggerate the lips. The kid in the picture does neither of these things. It is much more similar to what might be done to makeup an actor in an amateur production of "Othello."

None of this is likely to matter if you've already decided that you've been offended and aren't interested in discussing the matter further. But I really would urge you to take a broader view, and for God's sake to learn your own history.

Learn my own history? You don't even know what you're talking about. Do think that your silly wikipedia definition makes you knowledgeable about how black people were portrayed in this country by media?
I know you're ignorant about what it feels like to be represented this way but the truth is ignorance is not bliss it's just ignorance.

You gonna need to read more than the definition of blackface to understand the bigger picture as to why this is offensive.

Lastly it's not about kids in spain it's about Woot IN THE UNITED STATES hopefully noticing that and not putting it up.

I encourage you to take a broader view about how the ramification of hundreds of years of racist word and portrayals could lead to some like this being not being okay in America.

Adding to lbrigby's comment, here's my mini thirty-second addition to the topic. The bottom line is: run away!

I recently purchased a 52" Philips TV and returned it two months later (I love Sam's Club/Costco return policy), and here's why.

Out of the box it looked great. The picture was absolutely amazing and the setup couldn't be easier. One amazing feature (at least, conceptually), was that it had a HDMI port WITH a L/R composite audio input - as in, a easy computer connection. See here for a picture:

http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/faqview?scy=US&subrequest=1&mid=Link_FAQs&new_tmpl=1&session=20091219153411_68.107.128.141&desc=Philips+LCD+TV+52PFL7704D+52%22+class+Full+HD+1080p+digital+TV+with+Perfect+Pixel+HD+Engine&view=aa12_view_full.html&list=aa12_list_partial.html&slg=AEN&refnr=0066359&refdisplay=MTV_LCD_U_LC08SP_QAC_66359&dct=QAC&ctn=52PFL7704D/F7

I wanted to use my PC as a media center; I had two means of connecting it. I connected the PC using the DVI<->HDMI cable and L/R composite cable. No sound. I restarted the PC - I hear the startup/shutdown sounds, but nothing once logging in.

Lone and behold, the nvidia drivers apparently are trying (but failing) to send sound over the HDMI connection. OK, several hours later, I found a nvidia admission of the problem -- apparently it is well known. They had an app which would disable the audio-over-HDMI signal, so I used it.

Sound! Yes. Woohoo. I was content. Then, the next day, the sound was completely gone - from the PC, TV, etc.. I unplugged the TV for a minute, plugged it back in - and all was ok once more. This was a constant problem: if the PC HDMI cable was connected, the TV would randomly lose all sound until drained of power.

Alas, I returned the TV. I recently bought a 42" Proscan TV from Walmart - $200 more then this - but oh-so-worth it. I plugged the HDMI cable in and everything worked. The sound never dies.

I do not recommend Philips if you're going to use your PC with it; the Philips support folks are nice but clueless in this area. It will take absolute determination to get it setup and then a big annoyance to live with the sound issue, if it happens to you too. Totally not worth it here, considering you cannot return it to Woot!.

It's called Buyer Protection coverage and many Visa and Mastercards offer it free of charge. its a pretty common benefit.
I use a CHASE rewards Mastercard with no annual fee that offers the extra 1 year warranty extension.
American Express and Citi bank both have cards that offer it as well.

Wikipedia?? I haven't used Wikipedia since it told my son Benjamin Franklin was born in Malibu California about ten years ago. However, I do use dictionary.reference.com and merriam-webster.com and both identify blackface as making fun of black people as in the old minstrel shows.

Now, first of all, nobody from Woot! was wearing blackace or even black makeup; rather they showed a picture of someone in Spain wearing black makeup so that they could look like a black character in a cartoon show...no attempt to ridicule or make fun of the black race (as in minstrel shows), rather an attempt to emulate.

They also showed people dressed as wizards and other assorted weirdos.

Now, had someone at Woot! dressed in blackface I could understand you telling Woot! you're offended...but a picture of someone else in black makeup - not blackface, but black makeup?

A few years ago ultra-liberal Ted Danson dressed up in blackface:

http://www.paunchstevenson.com/photos/ted-danson-blackface-1b.jpg

but the scandal was small because of his political leanings. Had Tom Selleck done the same I'm sure you'd still hear about it today...

If I was some Trekkie weirdo I might dress up as Worf (cause he was kinda cool) at a Star Trek Convention...with black makeup...but I wouldn't have considered it blackface, and I doubt anybody at the convention would have considered it racist because I was emulating, not ridiculing.

Anyway, I don't care what color your skin is, but I can tell you that yours is way too thin!

You see refurbs of everything. For example, there are tons of Apple product refurbs everywhere but most people would agree Apple products are not junk. Refurbished doesn't always mean that something was broken or malfunctioned--it's often something as small as a box being dented or opened. Just FYI.

As a former Electronics Tech, I normally looked at refurbs as "getting the bugs out". I've been buying, through here and other sites, cameras, printers, pc's and HDTV's. So far I only got burned on a Westinghouse 26" lcd TV, not bought here. It bluescreens before the logo comes up. Took it to a repair shop, and the owner was pissed- The board needed for repair was almost $200 before shipping, and after that cost was factored in, + his labor (reasonable), the repair was over 300 bucks- More than the refurb cost. That is not a good sign for local repair shops- The smaller sets are almost throwaways. Had the set less than 3 years. Got a 1985 RCA TV in the basement that still works. Quality & reliability are becoming things of the past.

So, enjoy your refurb.

That's funny. Where did all these refurbs come from? Maybe returns?

I have a philips 42" with a similar model number and am really happy with it. My wife does not like it, she says people look too real and it freaks her out.

Don't forget sales tax too; only 6% in MD, but still another $35 on top of the $80 price difference.

I'm tempted to go for it, but I've had terrible luck with LCDs on woot in the past. I bought 3 Soyo monitors, all with many bad pixels, returned them twice; The final three still had bad pixels (9 different monitors!).

I bought a Hann-Spree 32" LCD from Woot that had terrible color, despite hours of tinkering with settings.

I think for $100 more it's worth it to buy one at a warehouse club like Sam's and return it if there's any dead pixels. Sam's never bothers me, and I keep the supply of refurbished bad-pixel monitors headed towards woot.

Shiftlock wrote:I mounted a similar 42" LCD TV up against the wall using a unique method that I haven't seen anywhere else. I purchased a foot of white link chain from Home Depot, along with two sturdy drywall-mount hooks. I put the hooks in the wall where I wanted the TV mounted. I cut two small pieces of the chain off, and attached them to the hooks. I hung the LCD on the chains using the top two mounting screws on the back of the TV. It was super easy, cost me $5, and the TV is closer to the wall than it would be with a conventional wall-mount bracket. It hangs in such a way that it tilts down slightly, which is perfect because I wanted it mounted it high so I could put a shelf under it for the bluray player, stereo receiver, cable box and slingbox. For the shelf, I used a couple of L brackets and a piece of generic white shelving ($10 total, again Home Depot) with a 1" hole drilled in it so the wires could pass through. I finished it off by putting all the wires in a white wire loom, which was only a few more bucks at Home Depot. Overall, for all the mounting stuff, shelf, and wire loom, it cost me less than $20, took about an hour for everything, and it's the cleanest looking wall-mounted LCD installation I've seen.

There is a reason you haven't seen this installation anywhere else, and that is because it's a doomed to fail. This may have been super easy, but it's also super flimsy. A TV this size was never meant to be supported by only two drywall hooks. Also, hanging the TV from only the top two mounting screws is not adequate for the weight of this TV. I wouldn't stand too close to this TV, because when it falls off the wall it's going to injure someone.

Commendable but pointless to engage these people, including Woot for posting the picture. I think the consensus is that it's ok for some white guy to dress like a bumble bee (or a race-neutral mutant) because he probably has better access to black shoe polish where he lives than to "costume" makeup for non-whites. Dude in picture is apparently also well-intentioned and oblivious to racial tensions in the US because he lives in Spain. Geez!

Still, it's a worthwhile exercise to object to their ignorant practices as a kind of reality check.

God help the Spaniard bumblebee mutant boy if the pic was of him "desecrating" the American flag, even if "innocently". Unlikely Woot would have let that one slip through,
though.

Will be sure to check conscientious objections at Woot's portal in the future.

So just got my tv in Salt Lake yesterday, came with everything but the screen was completely shattered. phillips said they wouldnt do anything about it, even with the 90 day warranty, they just wrote down my info and said to go take it up with woot or UPS. then said goodbye.
so next i called UPS and they asked info about the shipment, what happened, etc. then they asked the cost to repair or replace the tv. i told them about 700$ (because i dont imagine i could replace it for 500 like i paid on woot), I dunno. then they were slightly hung up on the declared value of $460 that the shipper stated. So i told them if they could find me a replacement for 460 i would happily take it, but 700 was the best i could think of. so they said ok and said they'd come inspect the package the next day

so UPS came this morning to pick up the tv and inspect the package. im at work so my wife took the tv downstairs to concierge, and they were instructed to give it to the UPS guy. When she left the building she saw the UPS guy load it into the truck. apparently the TV was taken away, i dont know where, and i dont know for how long or what will happen...
but UPS has it now

any similar experiences?

worst case scenario:UPS reimburses me 460 for the TV. and i'm out 40$ and have no TV

Best case scenario, they send it back to phillips and UPS pays phillips 460$ then phillips gives me another one and UPS ships the new one to me free.

im hoping for the latter

then just a few hours ago i finally got my tracking number from woot.
my tv had already been shipped, smashed, opened, tested, reboxed, and sent back to UPS before i ever got my shipping number
a little late on that one i guess

good luck everyone

FWIW, I got my shipment notice and tracking number today, 2 days after the TV (sans remote/power cord/paperwork) arrived.

Meanwhile, somebody at Woot responded fairly quickly to my E-Mail and gave me a number to call. The person at that number told me somebody else would contact me within 2 days to tell me the replacement items were about to be shipped. This is day #2. We'll see what happens next.

Got mine today without the remote or the power cord. I've e-mailed woot to find out what to do next. Meanwhile, I dug up a power cord from among all the stuff I have saved over the years from other electronic devices I've owned. Downloaded the manual from Phillips. The thing works just fine, easy to hook up, but without the remote there are some functions that I can't access. Still it's a lot better then the ugly, worn-out thing that it replaced, so I'm moderately happy. I'll be even happier if I can get a proper remote for it.

That's not quite how damage claims work. UPS came to your house to pick up, and ship the TV back to the original shipper (our vendor). Your TV is currently in transit to their location. I am sending you a Private Message with a solution to this problem. If you have any questions regarding damaged shipments, please contact us at service@woot.com.

Just got this one yesterday - fast shipping, I must say. So far, so good, except for one thing ... you have to be within about 4 ft. of the TV and pointing the remote directly at the receiver hole at the bottom right for it to work - and repeatedly punch the command. Does anyone have a suggestion? Yes, I installed new batteries.
