I bought this tv from Woot in Feb. Had it delivered to my office and didn't get it home for a few weeks-when I opened it up, no remote, no cord, no instructions-no customer service from Philips they kept telling me how unfortunate I was not to have called them within 1 month of purchase or they would have replaced those items for free but since I didn't I could buy them. Once I got over being pissed, I went to Radio Shack bought a cord and remote for $25 bucks and have been happy with the tv ever since and just ordered one for my dad and am optimistic that his set will arrive complete.

My husband and I bought this TV for a home media center to connect with our PC. We had to return it because it would not connect to the PC at all. We tried every patch/driver we could find, but nothing would make it work. There is an issue with the way the Philips TV broadcasts the EDID to the computer; many other people have had similar issues, see this forum:

from that link it seems to be a problem with catalyst driver and not the tv.

don't you need 120 hz for the nvidia 3d graphics thing to work? that would be one reason to buy a 120hz tv

I own the Philips 42" 1080p LCD HDTV model that came out before this one did, and I must say that while it is going on 2 years old, I have not had one issue with it, and it looks just as brilliant as it did on day 1. If this newer model is even 9/10ths as good, I'd say this is a great buy!

I bought this same exact TV from WalMart a couple months ago and paid the same price for a brand new one. It was on sale at the time and I believe the normal price was about $650. I love this TV - it's a great deal!

powdermilkman wrote:Just wanted to say i have this tv (watching doctor who atm) and its great for the price.

I bought it for $539 on buy.com about 2 months ago and it's a great tv.

After a bunch of research i found out allot of these were returned because the component and hdmi were going out withing a week of purchase. But don't let that scare you, it was a firmware problem, not a component problem.

Most of these tv's were "refurbished" by just simply upgrading the firmware. Mine came shipped with the new firmware and has been working great.

Also i have to note that the rca composite in is pretty crap for older gaming consoles (nes, genesis, snes, etc.) It looks really bad even when in 4:3, it also suffers from slight hd lag. To fix this I bought a $50 rca to hdmi converter and it works great, no lag.

Edit:

Here are a couple of photos of the TV playing HD net flicks from a Xbox 360 through hdmi.

Hey, could you point me in the direction of where you got your converter? I like to play Nintendo 64, but it looks terrible on my LCD and I'd like to play it on something other than a 10" tube tv.

Were you using an analog connection (VGA)? That can be a little trickier (especially if you select a resolution/refresh rate that the monitor can't handle), but if you use HDMI or DVD -> HDMI, any moderately recent version of Windows should figure it out easily. I haven't tried it with my 2K box yet, but now I'm tempted

Edit: Oh, this one doesn't even have VGA in. So no one has to worry about analog headaches unless they're using a DVI -> Component converter.

No, I think that the gaming argument is faulty unless you have a really high end system that can churn out more than 60fps regularly. I don't think that's even an issue on consoles because I believe developers aim for 60fps at the high end (because 60hz is the standard on NTSC) and sometimes 30fps.

I'm not going to say that if your system can crank out 120fps that it's no different than 60. During the frame rate arguments of olden days some people believed the marketing hype that no one could see over 30fps, but research (that appeared BEFORE 3d graphics on home computers) says that you don't really start tricking your brain into perceiving true motion until around 72fps. So more frames are better, but whether your computer can generate rates that even keep up with the normal 60hz is another matter.

At 60Hz, oldy tyme CRTs flicker noticeably for a lot of people (raises hand), but LCD retain residual images for a smidge longer so you don't see the flicker, so that's not an issue.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to game on an old LCD that were on cheap lappies in the 90s, but nothing ghosts like that anymore... I hope.

I don't know why everyone is bashing Philips... I have a 47" LCD by them and have never had a single problem. It is on 8+ hours every day! (sometimes I even sleep with it on!) It works as well as the day I got it! It is now about 3 years old. & I love it! I would buy this one if I needed another tv (and I'm still debating on if I should anyway...)

Wait, is the kid in the middle in "blackface" as in "trying to look like a Black person" or is it black makeup in order to look like something non-human or as part of a costume? Those seem like very different things-- minstrel show vs. special ops sort of difference, you know? I don't want to tell people when they ought/oughtn't be offended, but it sure looks like it's part of a costume that has nothing to do with being a person of African descent.

Heck, I also think that there's a difference between mocking blackface and trying to look like a character/person that you idolize. If a white dood put on blackface and started doing some Kingfish impressions, that's a problem, but what if it were a misguided Blade Halloween costume that was done out of admiration for the character? Granted, in the US especially, a person ought to know better but should there be a mockery/homage distinction? Hmm... pondery...

ok, the guy in the middle in "black face" is portraying "Diana the Acrobat", a female black (african american if you must, though that term didn't exist in 1983) character from the Animated CARTOON SERIES "Dungeons & Dragons" from the 1980's!! The photo appears to have been taken in 2008 in SPAIN! I seriously doubt that people in Spain really give a carp about stupid American's racial sensitivity and need to force that sensitivity on everyone around them.

I am sure there was no mal-intent on the cosplayer's part. I'm sure they would be totally confused by some dope in America being offended by kids dressing up as CARTOON CHARACTERS.

That would be a Caucasian girl (based on the skirt and hands) in a witch costume. If her face has makeup on it, the screen is too blurry to make it out anything but what looks like red lips.

It doesn't mean that she is in "black face", but it does mean that either Woot posted a low res picture or the television has trouble with color depth.

1) "blackface" as it was used in minstrel shows consisted of the entire face being made up in pan black EXCEPT for the mouth, which was either left with a white circle or was painted with red to exaggerate the lips. The kid in the picture does neither of these things. It is much more similar to what might be done to makeup an actor in an amateur production of "Othello."

2) Aside from the obvious significance of the makeup in portraying blacks as "thick-lipped," the reason blackface has become virtually synonymous with racism is the content of the minstrel show from which it sprung, about which the less said the better. This photo is not of a minstrel show, so criticizing it on that basis is quite simply taking things WAY out of context.

3) Blackface is considered racist IN THE UNITED STATES. But the photo is, as has been noted, not from the US. It is unreasonable to judge a photo from Europe by US cultural standards, especially when there was pretty clearly no racist intent.

None of this is likely to matter if you've already decided that you've been offended and aren't interested in discussing the matter further. But I really would urge you to take a broader view, and for God's sake to learn your own history.

for that you need a tv which supports 120hz INPUT.

most "120 hz" TVs do NOT support 120Hz input, they support standard 60 hz input, and can show more frames using interpolation, which I actually have seen done very poorly (on an expensive Samsung a few years back, it made all kinds of weird artifacts in the picture)
