akakin wrote:Well, I missed out the camera in box of cereal. Actually, I was surprised that they forgot to put the lights in mine. But that's not important.

The pictures from this camera are printed on paper that has a lenticular screen covering it. This is the stuff that you see on some cards that you can tilt left and right and see different images. It does work, but you get little vertical ridges on the print.

The good news is that it takes virtually any 35mm film. The bad news is there is only one place left that develops it, and it costs $2.80 per print. That's painful.

But I still wanted one of these to try out. (I used to do a lot of 3D and darkroom work). When you take the picture, it actually produces four images on the film. But, here's the trick to make your camera sort of useful.

Use slide film. Tell the process folks to NOT mount the slides. Just get the roll back. For each of the four pictures, cut off the far left and far right images. Place them into 3D slide holders. You can get those for about $4 for 30 of them. Then, you can place that in a viewer (check ebay for 35mm 3D viewers. They are there). Then you get decent images. Better than the old viewmaster reels because the film is bigger.

If you really want, you can use B&W film and make small prints from the outer two images. Those can be placed on a card and placed in the old style 3D viewers you see from the early 1900s. That works too.

Can it work? Yeah. Worth it? Your call.

This is a Quality-Post to me! Opportunity to actually use the 3d camera. Thanks!

Where do you get the slide holders? I have my dad's 3D camera from...well who knows, the 30's, 40's or 50's.
I was using it myself until I couldn't get the slides developed and mounted anymore.

Is there a place that still sells the viewers? All my family photos from childhood are 3D. I'm guessing the old heavy viewer with the light in it , is broken by now. I have one newer one (from the 60's) that you hold up to a light.
It would be nice to get a new one.

That's two letters, right? I just realized today that a) although one of the items in my box was a return, WOOT has never sold that item that I can find, and b) Amazon HAS sold it- and now the two are one. All bets are off as to what we will get in our second shipments. As long as it doesn't claw its way out of the shrink wrap, I'll be thrilled. Actually I was pretty happy with the Bowl of Cereal, thankyouverymuch Woot!

Actually, the mounts are not hard to come by. One such place is Rocky Mountain Memories at http://www.rmm3d.com/

Look under the supplies, and look for the slide mounts. It will show a variety. Some are plastic mounts, some cardboard. The plastic snap together, but have registration pins to assure good film clip alignment. The cardborad ones (like regular slide mounts) have a centering frame. The cardboard are fold over design, with either self adhesive or heat seal.

Notice that there are multiple sizes. I would guess these cameras will produce a half-frame. To be sure, open the back of your camera and measure the opening of one of the four frames. I'm virtually certain it will be 16x21mm. But double check before buying. Again, the price is quite reasonable.

As for viewers, I know used ones are on ebay. I have one that is battery powered, but I put a jack in it to take a wall adapter. Simple flashlight bulbs.

If you decide to try this, make sure to hold the camera level. Tilting the camera confuses the eye/brain connection and impairs the 3D effect. Frame your pics with distinct foreground and background objects. The result is really excellent. Viewing the transparency instead of a lenticular image is not as convenient, but it is way better image quality with better 3D depth.

I may check the Woot Trade forum to see if can pick one of these up. If you really get into this, you can buy used 35 stereo cameras (Kodak Realist comes to mind) for a reasonable price on ebay as well.
