The value of the blu-ray is diminished when the screen can't contain 1080p.

I might have to consider buying a laptop now, this seems kind of cool. Do wish the price was a bit lower though to make it an easier decision. Will be checking reviews and prices before I pull the trigger then.

Okay, I was silly enough to purchase the last Woot (the Auria TV) at literally the last second. Everything looked normal -- $229 + $5 s/h -- until I clicked on the gold button. After clicking, $16 in taxes was suddenly tacked on!

SINCE WHEN DID WOOT COLLECT TAXES FOR NYC RESIDENTS????? In fact, they even had a Tax Discount for Texas residents (code: taxsucks) so that the final price would be the same as those who didn't live in Texas.

UIs this part of the Amazon takeover? i have never paid taxes on a Woot purchase before and am distressed by this. With tax, Woot often no longer offers the best deals.

===========

a $229 item suddenly became $251 ,,, which I didn;t notice until after I clicked. I'm canceling... merde.

17 inch laptop isnt good for school for those who are thinking about it when i worked in it at Lander University every one i met that had 17 didnt tote it to class because it was to heavy. i personally like 14.1 but wouldn't recommend over 15.6

i wonder how that vid card would do with 1080p mkv files? been looking for a decent lappy that can double as a home theater PC outputting 1080p thru HDMI to an HDTV.

The integrated video and 8-cell battery on this computer is good for hours and hours of light gaming.

Listen, unless you enjoy pools of molten video card on your lap, I don't recommend this machine. And it isn't new. I really love woot, but you are playing laptop roulette with HP. They have serious build quality issues.

Well done giving a shout out to the UCB Theatre, which is always under-appreciated--although maybe that's why they're still so good.

Not on a 17" screen.

No, not really. You can probably find a better deal on Newegg.

But it has HDMI output to connect to a 1080p monitor. It also has a remote so you can use it a BlueRay player.

I took the dive. I need a new laptop and this one seems pretty good. Wish it had a better video card, but I don't do anything extreme. Going to have to find a good cooling pad I can carry with me.

That's just silly. You can get a bad egg from any company. I've had several HP's, only a few problems here and there, but they were taken care of under warranty, no problem. I would buy HP again. (just not this laptop because it's not a great deal)

You always owed the tax before, it's called 'use tax' and you owe it on the income taxes if you didn't pay it as sales tax. You were a 'tax cheat' not paying it, albeit unwittingly.

State and local tax revenue has fallen, I'd rather the money go there than higher price.

Not for school. I have an HDX 16 (16") and I find it way too big and heavy. For school, I'd recommend something between 10 and 15.6 inches.

I couldn't agree more. My last 6 computers have been HPs, and only one has had any problems at all--and their warranty service is great. I just don't like this one computer. :D

This is actually a nice computer, but I don't think the price is justifiable to it's specs. The video card is decent, but outdated compared to the other specs, along with a few other things I've noticed.

Considering it's refurbished, it would have to be taken down about $150.00 or so for me to qualify it as a good deal.

But on the bright side... refurbished just means that it was already screwed up in advance, but it's been fixed so you don't have to worry about it.

Well, there are screens that size--and less (my HDX 16 16" has 1080P)--but just not this one, which would be a major annoyance to people who want to watch movies on its built-in display.

It depends on your need for portability. if you plan on lugging your laptop around and taking notes in class, this may be overkill. It's heavy at 7+ lbs and large with a 17"+ screen and keypad. In other words, it'll give you a backache and takes up lots of desk space.

BUT .... it's an excellent desktop replacement. if you need a laptop that sits in your dorm most of the time, this is perfect. It's certainly as powerful as many desktops:

- It has a 500 gb 7200rpm hard drive. Most laptop hard drives run at 5400 rpm
- The video card is decent, better than that in most laptops
- It has an eSATA port, which few laptops have. This is a must if you move a lot of data to and from an external drive, i.e. backing up. It is MUCH faster than going through USB 2.0.
- The screen is amazing, and good enough for watching movies at a distance
- It has a remote control which operates the multimedia functions, i.e. play, stop, pause, etc. The remote slips conveniently in the ExpressCard slot. This makes watching videos easy
- It has HDMI output, which allows the laptop to function as a regular BlueRay player when conected to an HDTV. The above remote is handy
- The HDMI and VGA output, and Windows 7, makes it great for presentations. It's literally plug and play. And if an external monitor is not available, the 17"+ screen is ample.

,,,, BUT I THINK IT'S OVERPRICED. See my next post.

found some reviews here

Several people complained about battery issues, loud fan, and poor speakers but overall it got good reviews.

You are right in that this is something to take into account, if tax is added that can affect the bottom line price and not end up being worth it, much less the lowest price.

You sure it didn't say somewhere that tax would be added?

I take screen captures of all my Woot receipts. Looked at three for the last week, no tax on any. I am in California.

Interesting. Maybe somewhere on Woot they mention the tax issue.

I for sure won't be buying on Woot if they tack on sales tax.

I don't think so. The three separate hp models I've dealt with have all had serious heat issues.

I know all that but when did Woot's policy change and why weren't we told? I Wooted as recently as last month and there was no tax.

The lack of tax is a major feature of online commerce. And it isn't an underground feature either. Many shopping search engines give you the final price with s/h and tax.

I'm really more annoyed with Woot than the tax itself. Especially since the first screen (where you choose 1,2 or 3 items) which gives you the total doesn't display the tax, merely the price and $5 s/h. There is no excuse for this since Woot already knows my zipcode. If my state charges taxes, it should indicate it once one starts to order.

Here's a screen capture of my receipt. tax is highlighted. It definitely did not indicate any taxes in the initial ordering screen, where you choose 1,2 or 3 units. After selecting the amount, it gives you a total composed from the item's price and $5 s/h. After clicking on the little yellow button. it gives another status screen which I didn't not examine carefully. I merely clicked on the large yellow button because i didn't expect any surprises.

well since they deleted my posts warning about getting many HP laptops in my shop being defective, I'll omit the URL I posted. Suffice it to say there were many HP Laptop models that were sold with defective NVidia cards, and HP refused to recall all brands that were affected and fought like heck to not fix their customers' laptops. look it up! search for DV9500 screen problem and you'll see that you should never trust HP's laptops!

HP Laptop...

I've hap an HP laptop for about a year (bought it new from the factory). It's the worst laptop I've ever seen. They even forgot to connect the hard drive at the factory. I can only imagine what a refurbished HP is like.

How is that cheating? It is called STATE sales tax. Are you KIDDING ME !!! If I live in New York, I should not pay Texas sales tax. It's that simple.

I feel bad for anyone who bought one not knowing HP's track record. One of my friends who had me look at theirs tried everything and finally resorted to a small claims filing and then HP finally sent him an offer.

Just seeing things that have prices like this lap top make feel like I must be the only one in the world that is having a problem paying the bills lately.

Wow though! I am thinking I would not afford this one even if I had millions to blow.

I mean , just thinking of what is possible these days with 680.00.
I could load up the camper and the family and go to the coast for a week and pig out on crab legs and shrimp!
