JulianMatthew wrote:Does anyone know for sure if the LT2104U will read 16gb SDHC cards.

The specs say the multireader will read SD cards and the Gateway site has a post from a user who stated that an SDHC card could not be read by the LT2104U.

Please help, as this could be the dealbreaker...

thank you.

No where in the specs does it say it can run a SDHC card, so my guess is that it won't. With the review that backs that up, I would say deal breaker. I'm still in for one of the black ones though.

For the ddr2 ran upgrade any recommendation which one to buy? Also, I see a 667 MHz and a 800 MHz 200 pin dimm. Would either one work for upgrade?

What are you talking about? I don't know of any computer that wouldn't be able to dual-boot OS's. The route I would recommend is resizing and partitioning the HD into 3 drives, 1 for Windows and a huge partition for all your media, then a separate partition install Linux and use GRUB as the boot manager. Easy as pie and it has worked great on 3 computers that I've set up.

Am looking fwd to this as ONLY a backup internet access/ printer portal.

I've an IMAC E3 ordered from Apple, that keeps slipping in delivery dates, which peeves me off.
Access to do this wooting is cumbersome/ time consuming on my dieing (?) /crippled Toshiba laptop.... much less the other daily access needed... I wish I had this (Red)cheap backup Gateway netbook access over a week ago !

'Woot on' folks !

Thanks for the tip on the warranty. I have now done the same. I also plan on adding memory. As for a case, what I like about these small machines is that I don't need a case--I can just stuff it in my briefcase.

The bus speed is 667 MHz, so if you use 800 MHz RAM, the speed will be stunted. While that's probably okay, it is generally thought that RAM runs more efficiently if it matches the bus speed.

edit: rereading your post, I see that you didn't actually specify which model. The red one has a bus speed of 533 MHz.

Overall, if you're just producing original, simple, files than OpenOffice is fine. Once you start trying to play the compatibility game with someone who is using MS Office, all bets are off.

OpenOffice is not a good substitute for MS Office. Pay the money, get performance.

As I've sadly discovered. MS office (at least Word) often is a difficult compatibility game with other versions of MS office. We used an outside consultant at work that used a different version of Word. The incompatibility between version had me thinking he must be colorblind. I finally downloaded the viewer that matched his version to see what he intended.

If you're talking colors, I'm finding that too. The earlier versions had a much smaller pallet of colors. When I send beautiful stuff to coworkers from Office 2007 or 2010, they send back stuff from their 2003 that looks like a child picked the colors.

Great! I appriciate the answer!

I purchased the black version, so i believe your answer pretty much says to buy the 667 speed to match the machine, does it matter which brand of 667mhz 2gb memory that I purchase?

Go to your account and click on "blog" behind the item you purchased.

That brings you to the item description page. Scroll down and you will see the Square Trade Warranty offer, click on the "one year for $27" and it will open a window.
Click on "buy now"

This will take you to the Square Trade webpage. It will give you the option to buy the one year warranty for that price. Underneath it asks if you have a coupon. Put SIZZLE in the coupon window. This will take 30% off the price.

Underneath all that it offers you to get an additional year of warranty for half price of the first year. If you click on that the total for both years (using that coupon) is $33.

Hope that helps.

I noticed that too and have to laugh. Some people are such dorks. They can't afford the item so they complain instead and inflate their stories. They're transparent as heck.

No, I'm not going to hehe.

I got on here too late the day it was sold and they were ALL gone. I planned on 3 for gifts, a great price for that HD size, viewing size and a 7 hour battery even if it lasts 4 to 5 hrs. Mine is only 160 gig and the batt doesn't last very long, about 1.5 hours. It's an HP and HP isn't quite as good as it used to be unfortunately. I buy cheaper computers from HP, if I want a good one I have it built today although I have a great HP monitor from woot.

Netbooks are great for travel or to have a lightweight way to connect to the internet not limiting yourself to your phone. I take mine every time I travel and it serves it's purpose well. That's Just My Opinion though.

"Yeah! You Tell `Em
You're not gonna sit there and let that jerkface get away with saying that, are you?"

Jared, start buying some woot items and maybe people will take your bull stories about buying 17 of an item that normally costs $300 or more to be reality. Geesh. :/ Couldn't you have come up with a better story?

Yes it can handle a 2gb max. Only one slot for memory so you'll have to purchase a 2 gb stick of DDR-667. Check newegg.com for a decent price.

One small caveat: Using that program may interfere with your ability to change screensavers. To change my screensaver I had to first turn the program off and let the wallpaper revert to what it originally was. It seems that Win 7 Starter doesn't simply not give you an option to change wallpapers--it actively changes them back to default if you should find a way around that limitation. Starter has to be blocked from changing the wallpaper back, and doing this interferes with other functions, like changing screensavers. It may cause other problems, too, but I don't know what.

I can't take credit for figuring this out myself. I found out with a google search when I wanted to figure out why I couldn't turn the screensaver function off.

They ship it out within five business days, and given the fact that this went up at 1am on Saturday, today is only the second business day. So they should be shipped out by Friday.

And Smartpost is notoriously slow, so sit tight.

Since I haven't received my Netbok yet I haven't tried this but I appreciate the info. I have a feeling Windows 7 Ultimate is going to be installed on this after a week of playing with Starter

I will be traveling to Europe on 17'th, in the afternoon.
I wonder how likely is it that the netbook arrives before then?
Well I would like to take it with me, but if it arrives later I at least have to plan accordingly. I'm on Austin TX. I saw the 5 days text, well hoping this is a worst case scenario and it ships out any minute :-).

I was thinking the same thing. I have Ultimate on my other laptop, and I don't think I could settle for Starter. I would only have to swap out for a 2GB RAM, right?

On an off note, what is everyone doing for storage? This is taking the place of my HP for school (took up way too much space in my bag), and I was going to get a neoprene, but wasn't sure if there was one that stored the netbook/adaper side by side. I've seen ones with pockets in the front, but that would add too much outward bulk.
