Excellent point. I've had a couple of cameras that run on AA and were compatible with the rechargeable variety. The Sanyo Eneloop batteries work great in these cameras. I carry an extra set and since they don't lose their charge, I'm all set.

I hate to say this, but I had to price match walmart for my job and they had a Nikon d3000 with 18-55mm and a 55-200 for 500 (two weeks ago). It was an insanely good deal.

I've been waiting for one of these to show up. At $40, its much cheaper than buying two or three throw away cameras (which we NEVER develop) for the kids every time we go on vacation. Thanks Woot!

Now, where's our Woot-off...

ok, perhaps my previous question was a bit ambiguous...

can anyone give me any idea how long it takes woot to ship and by what method?

(I never made a woot purchase that I needed by a certain date before so never paid attention.)

Does this camera capture the photograph as soon as you click the button? I had an easyshare (can't remember the model) which would delay about a second before actually taking the picture. Not good when you have an active 3 year old.

I've been wanting something with a Flash (To Replace my Camera Phone) for a while now. After a few loops around the Interwebs, the General Consensus is that this is a Great price for a Passable camera. Good enough for me. :P

Mine had an unfortunate accident and got a busted screen, so I'm pondering grabbing one of these as a replacement.

Wow, we had parallel experiences. I too got it off Woot, and yes it did wonderful videos and photos (very little distortion and color artifacts). And my LCD screen also broke -- within 3 weeks of purchase. I don't even know what happened. I just looked in my knapsack one day and the screen was cracked.

I wonder if Kodak screens are especially delicate. My Fuji, Canon and Casio have gone through much more abuse without breaking. One reason might be that these cameras are extra large and heavy (the AA batteries) making any falls more impactive.

I didn't buy another Kodak though because it burned through batteries too quickly. I literally had to replace batteries after 20 shots and one short movie.

I don't know for sure but I highly doubt if something this cheap would have short shutter lag.

Get some Lithium batteries in the AA size.

This uses SmartPost, which is a hybrid method combining Fedex and USPS. Fedex picks up the camera from Woot and delivers it to your local US Postal Office. USPS then finishes the delivery. The shipping time varies depending on when Woot ships, and where you live. I'd say give it 1-2 weeks. There's really no telling how soon Woot ships, but they will send you an email with tracking info. Now and then, the email will actually arrive after you've already received the package!

Does have a bit of shutter lag. More than more expensive cameras have. You're not going to become a professional photographer with a $40 camera.

Note - if you're wondering what size memory card to get, at full 12MP setting each picture is about 4MB. So, you can take about 250 pictures for every 1G of storage your card has. For example, an 8G card (about $20 online) will hold about 2,000 pictures at the 12MP setting.

As someone who has worked at a battery store (yes, we ONLY sell batteries), I can tell you that AA batteries is actually a good thing for several reasons.

The biggest reason is that they are common. Someone else mentioned it too, that if you get into a bind and just need to take a few pictures, you don't have to wait while that fancy, better cameras' special-shaped LI-ION battery recharges. Just cannibalize your TV remote and CLICK! Instant memories!

Second reason is that if you know someone who's not just "not tech savvy" but who is a train wreck when it comes to anything more complicated than a toaster, this is something they can understand. I can't tell you how many times I've had to explain to people things about camera batteries that should be obvious. Like using the right type/shape/model is not optional. AA is a size that is pretty much universally known and understood. Few are the people you could ask "do you know what a AA battery is?" and get a puzzled look from. At least in the USA. For the record, another model for them is 1500 size (as in Duracell ProCell 1500 = AA sise).

Then, of course, there are the rechargeables. I did see someone talking about having the 2800mAH NIMH batteries and using the awesome charger. I think you may have gotten a bad batch or something is my instinct. My mom has this camera and has not had the same low-picture-count on a single charge. Remember that just like anything else, batteries are subject to defect. I like to tell people that battery making is much akin to baking: sometimes they turn out great, sometimes just "okay" and as normal, but sometimes you get a flop-batch of cookies or bread.

Another thing about rechargeables: mAH isn't everything. Consider two main things when you are buying your rechargeables: Do you use the camera often, or is it more sporadic? When you do use it, how much do you use it at that time? The mAH just tells you the capacity, but not how good the battery is at holding the power betwixt charges. Rechargeables self-drain pretty fast, in general. If you charge your batteries, take a few pics, then let the camera sit around for 4 months, you'll need to charge them again if they are normal rechargeables.

Many people know about the recent (that is, within just the last few years) arrival of batteries like the Sanyo Eneloop batteries: batteries that have been modified to hold their charge longer while just sitting around. Only a few companies make the type right now (Rayovac Hybrid, Duracell "Pre-charged," Sanyo Eneloop, and Maha/PowerEx Imedion are the ones I can think of), and for the person that only casually or infrequently uses their camera, they are a better AA rechargeable. This type of battery does have less mAH than the older common type of NIMH rechargeable, a result of the different battery design, but if you let them sit around for 4 months, they'll have MUCH more power left than the others.

The last benefit of AA that I'll point out: Availability of the non-rechargeable lithium batteries. If you are going to be somewhere extremely cold, and want to be able to take pictures, then your best bet is to use the non-rechargeable lithiums. They are surprisingly light-weight, and nothing else works as well in cold, really. They also have the longest shelf-life, so you can carry around an "emergency set" of batteries with you for 10 years.

Anyway, I'm not sure if anyone will even read this whole thing, but it's been fun to ramble on for a bit like if I was at work. Hope this helps someone at least. Toodaloo!

Kodaks are so high drain that lithiums probably won't last much longer. Not worth the extra cost. Several sets of NiMHs is the way to go. Cheap camera deserves cheap batteries!

Best low budget camera on Woot that I've seen in a year. Lots of the comments would be reasonable for a $100+ camera, but this one is just FORTY BUCKS!! Kodaks are goof-proof and bullet-proof....AND take excellent snapshots. It could be more compact, but could be twice the price too. I bought a $300 Pannie Lumix last year to go upscale and get lots of crappy pics...the old Kodak 3.2MP I used for years always got it right. And the ability to drop in two AAs in a pinch is super.

Bit of a note, for the guy that was talking about the cracked screen, You can buy shades( for the lcd screens that do double duty as screen protectors and to keep it clean. I have one on my old one and I cut a piece of microfiber lens cloth to the screen size and when I fold the shade up, i lay the cloth on the screen. My 5 year old camera still looks like new because I'm careful with it.

I did read the whole thing and hope that you get a Quality Post. I read with special interest because I used to test batteries so I know all issues you mentioned. And as the person who posted the message about how this Kodak drains my 2800mAh batteries like mad, I can say that none of the valid issues you mentioned applies. If anything is defective, it would be the camera. Actually, it wasn't defective because the Internet is full of complaints about battery use.

In summary, the batteries were not defective because I test and refresh them upon first use with the LaCrosse. The 4 day process repeatedly charges and discharges the batteries to give them maximum capacity. Their capacities came out to about 2000mAh. Second, the 20 photos and 1 movie occurred within a day so self-discharge was not an issue. This average lifespan occurred repeatedly no matter what brand I used, and I tested over 10 sets. I got about 40 photos at most. And even with freshly charged batteries, a HD movie would wouldn't go beyond 7 mins because the dreaded low battery warning would pop up. Allowing it to rest would reset the meter, and I could do a few more mins of video. Completely unacceptable. And yes, Eneloops fared no better but I didn't expect them to since self-discharge was not an issue.

I have to reitterate that I'm not talking about this model but another Kodak with similar specs but HD video.

Every point and shoot camera, sans most advanced ones will have a considerable delay between button press and actual capture. It's called shutter lag, as many have pointed out.

There's good news however. You can make capturing much faster, not instant (even most expensive SLR have SOME lag, even if it's in milliseconds), but much better. Works with this or with a camera you already own...

Bulk of the time in shutter lag delay on p&s cameras is taken by auto-focusing, because it uses the matrix for focusing, unlike SLR's that have dedicated focusing mechanism.

To eliminate this time - pre-focus:

Compose the image before you need to shoot, make sure something is in the place of your main subject (or compose a shot with completely different subject, but same distance away as your subject-to-be should appear at). Then half-press the shutter button. You'll eventually hear a beep (or a green light will go on, or a dot on LCD will appear or all of the above) to indicate the focus is locked. Then without releasing the button re-compose if needed and wait. Once the subject is in the right place with a right face - finish off clicking the button. The shot will be taken nearly instantly, as compared to you pressing the button all the way to begin with!

Hope this will help someone around here...

P.S. I use a modestly expensive SLR, and I still use this technique, even though SLR's focus waaaay faster than P&S. So this is a good thing to master with any kind of camera!

Well, that's unfortunate. I guess, to continue my baking analogy - sometimes there's just a bad recipe, too. I'm not sure if the one my mom has is exactly this model, but I do know it's a AA using Kodak 12something megapixel. Anyway, I didn't intend on implying that you or anyone else wasn't doing/using the best possible, and it seems from your response that you understood that. I just wanted to share a bit of what I've learned while working this job.
